Laptop suggestions

Unread postby curlylad » January 7th, 2007, 6:11 pm

I am looking at buying a laptop.
I also want to keep the desktop system and that will be for all my films, music, games etc etc.
So basically the laptop will be just for getiing onto Internet and doing my HJT logs whilst I'm downstairs as my main PC is in the spare bedroom.
Therefore I don't need something with all the whistles and bells and expensive graphic cards - integrated graphics would be fine.

So a cheap as chips, no frills, basic laptop - any ideas please people :?:

Dell have some cheap laptops - and PC world had a few £199.99 ones over the new year - may be one left.

For Dell - why not try the 'returns' section - they are all refurbed and are cheaper than the new ones.

The return could have been for any reason - and just after christmas is probably a good time to look.

A friend tried to get one at their 'local' store (without luck), seems a few folk got a bit snotty 'cos there weren't any left.

But, curlylad, if you find they've got two left at that price - let me know!

If you want it for HJT work you should not scimp on memory. Research can eat up memory quite fast. Also worth having a reasonble large HDD as I have found tht this type of work generates a goodly amount of material when you are doing logs.

Good points, I think a minimum of 512MB memory and 40GB HD should suffice.

Cury

My desktop has 4gb RAM & 500gb drives :)

For a laptop I would go with 2gb ram and 250 harddrive as my min :)
My current laptop although a small drive (I have external 340gb HD) has 1 gb ram.

ChrisRLG

My desktop has 1GB RAM and 160GB HD, for me that is adequate for what I need since I don't download or store many movies or lots of music.

As I said with my first post I only need it for doing HJT logs and the related research plus my canned speeches so I think that using that info plus the fact I want as cheap an option as possible then perhaps the specs you outline may be a little higher than I think I need.

I'm sure that my requirements can comfortabley be covered by a system of no more than £500.

I'll keep looking :)

I upped the ram to cope with multi VPC's being active :)
I like to give each VPC at least 512mb each.

Same with disc space.
at 5gb each those vpc drives take up a lot of room.
I have 'archived' copies of all the OP versions at each SP stage for testing :) plus live copies that I am using at the time.
