CryptoLocker

A friend pointed this out to me. Sounds a nasty one to my untrained eye, but easily overcome by using common sense ie never trust email links.

If they are that clever at programming why the &*%$ don't they design something good?

Cryptoprevent is mentioned in the Bleeping Computers article ... http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-r ... on#prevent

We haven't fully tested it as such, but the few tests we have run seem to suggest that it's fairly easy to use. Whether it will remain effective against future versions of CryptoLocker is impossible to say.

My advice to anyone who is worried about contracting this infection, is for them to make sure they have robust and effective backup systems in place, backing up their hard drive to detachable media (USB drives of 500GByte or even 1TByte are reasonably cheap). That way if their disk gets encrypted, they can recover to an uncorrupted disk image.

Cloud backup systems have the disadvantage of backing things up automatically, so when a file gets changed on your computer, the "mirror" file also gets updated on the cloud server, for obvious reasons this is not a good thing when dealing with CryptoLocker, since the encrypted hard drive files will update their cloud counterparts encrypting them as well.

 That'll teach me to read things properly and not when I have had Morphine

I backup using Acronis so I am pretty safe anyway.

Glad to hear you're backed up, I'm always disappointed by the number of people who don't attend to this essential piece of computer "maintenance".

Having a good backup strategy should be on everyone's agenda if they use a computer.
