Flash player will not run on Chrome browser

Unread postby P;3 » March 21st, 2019, 7:44 am

Windows 7 Home edition; all software up to date
I am trying to view this nest on Chrome Browser
https://www4.ntu.ac.uk/sustainability/b ... d=falcons# but it will not display

I have done all of this
https://support.digication.com/hc/en-us ... Macintosh-

but problem even with that is that the 'fix' only lasts while the browser is open and I do not keep the browser open 24/7

I think this is a 'problem; with the Chrome browser per se ?

Is this a known issue with this browser ??

I can view the nest in other browsers but not this one and am curious now to know why!!!

Thanks for any input

Don't use Chrome myself, but the following information looks like it could be useful .... https://www.lifewire.com/enable-flash-in-chrome-4160696

Since you can view things OK using other browsers, which use the "standard" version of Flash, and since the only browser you can't view things in uses a "non-standard" version of Flash, then I can only assume that there is some difference in the way the "non-standard" Flash implements things, that is not compatible with the Nottingham Trent University site.

I suspect you're not going to find out why, without talking to someone who has a close and intimate knowledge of Chrome's inner workings, and I am most certainly not that person. ;)

When I first went to that site in Chrome, I also could not see anything other than:

Live stream (white letters on a read background)
Loading the player ...

in the middle of the screen.

So, up at the top left of the address bar I clicked the "i" in a circle just to the left of the "https://www..." and clicked "site settings",

changed the "Ask (default" to the right of "Flash" to "Allow" and closed that "Settings" tab,

clicked the blue "Reload" button now visible at the top of the original page.

Bingo! Where the "Loading Player ..." was before is now a little video player window.

Clicked the right-pointing arrow and I now see a pigeon(?) sitting on a rock nest at the top of a building(?) ... and it's apparently live. I see some traffic down on the street below, a breeze moving the pigeon's feathers on her back a bit and she moves her head once in a while. Like she's sleeping maybe?

Anyway ... that's what worked for me. Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with all updates and the latest version of Chrome.

Give it a try and let us know?

Many thanks for the reply and contribution to this annoying issue !! Have done as suggested and yes it does 'work',,BUT; the 'problem is...why does this 'fix' have to be performed each and every time as....once the browser is closed the 'fix' unfixes!!'

Does Chrome have its own inbuilt 'flash Player ' that maybe 'fights' with the Flash player installed on my Windows 7

At least your methods works quicker than the hoops I have been going through of recent for the issue !! I think my question is...what is the cause of this ??

Does it have a remedy to stop having to reset it each and every time I go to that site with the Chrome ??

You're more than welcome. I don't (currently) know how to make the setting 'stick'. I do know though that the next time you visit that site it will be easier. When you click the little "i" in the blue circle to the left of the URL in the address bar, this time the "Flash" setting will be right there available on the drop down. Simply change it from Ask to Allow, "X" that drop down and click "Reload". When I get some time, I'll fiddle with it some more and see if I can get the "Allow" (for this site) to stick.

I do note that when i click on the little 'i' I am told the ' connection is not secure'; would that make any difference??
So far it is only that nest site link I have issues with and am intrigued to know why Chrome does not like it

Yep, could be. I see the same 'not secure' here as well, and it refuses to save my 'Allow' setting for Flash.

It's a https site, so I can't see why it would say it is not secure. Normally sites get flagged as insecure if they're using http, rather than https, but this site is using https, so I can't see why you should be getting notifications of this type.

I viewed it using Firefox 66.0.1, and got no such notifications.

Just so you know, the bird is a Peregrine, not a Pigeon. ;) :)

Eek! My bad. My apologies to you Gary R and of course poor Mrs. Peregrine.

P;3, if you click the little "i" in a blue circle to the left of the URL in the address bar and then follow the "more info" type links, you'll end up with the follwing explanation:
The site isn't using a private connection. Someone might be able to see or change the information you send or get through this site.

On some sites, you can visit a more secure version of the page:

Select the address bar.
Delete http://, and enter https:// instead.
If that doesn't work, contact the site owner to ask that they secure the site and your data with HTTPS.

Also using Firefox 66.0.1 and I get this...

Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead

Firefox detected a potential security threat and did not continue to www4.ntu.ac.uk. If you visit this site, attackers could try to steal information like your passwords, emails, or credit card details.

What can you do about it?

The issue is most likely with the website, and there is nothing you can do to resolve it.

If you are on a corporate network or using anti-virus software, you can reach out to the support teams for assistance. You can also notify the website’s administrator about the problem.

I have it on other browsers but not on Chrome ;it is a ' private ' web cam as such set up for peregrine watchers ; will have to live with the impossible I guess!! Plus I think we may all have learnt something from this 'exercise' too...even if it about Flash Player and Chrome and nest watching !!

Disabled my security extensions for Firefox and visited the site again, and this time I get a "padlock with yellow triangle" warning, telling me that the page contains mixed content.

What that generally means is that although the page itself is https, there are some links on it that go to http destinations.

In this case, if you go into Tools > Web Developer > Page Source (in Firefox) and look at the html code, you will find that there are indeed a number of links to http destinations.

Most are to destinations within Nottingham Trent University itself, and at least one is to Nottinghamshirewildlife.org

Didn't see any that would lead me to conclude that there is any risk from viewing the Peregrine footage.
