New install of XP will not allow Windows Microsoft Updates

Unread postby P;3 » May 23rd, 2013, 2:26 pm

I have a new install of XP with SP2 on it ; I have the CD with license key

My Firwall even when turned off makes no difference gets turned off with no effect. I have put the windows microsoft address in my allowed sites

I have checked the Windows site for any History for me but there is none

When I try to update I get message error Ox80240036 and Ox8024419

I am logged on as Administrator
I see this URL for the updates

http://www.update.microsoft.com/windows ... x?ln=en-us

Can you please tell me what I am doing not right to get the Updates? I note I do not see the usual item that 'validates' my Windows version

My computer has yet to tell me it has downloaded any updates and these are for installattion

My antivirus protection is current and Malwarebytes says I have no problems

How can you help please?

Manually download and install SP3

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389

Windows update should work then.

Thanks for such a speedy reply!!!!

May I ask how large to download is and how much time may be needed to download it? ( I am on Broadband but it can be 'slow' at times !!)

The download says it can be saved to disc, can it be saved to a special folder in my My Documents created for the purpose?

May I asj why the computer needs SP3 to then accept the Windows updates link ?

It's 316 MB, so on 2 Mb/s connection it would probably take 20 minutes or so.

You would have to ask Microsoft the question but it is because XP is old and due to go out of support.

MS stopped support for SP2 on 13th July 2010, which is why you need SP3 to access updates.

SP3 is supported until 8th April 2014, after which you won't be able to update it either.

Just install it, it updates Windows files so there is no option - it updates Windows in whatever location it now resides.
