Unread postby kitty_ces_mois » April 10th, 2005, 5:29 am

I have been working for hours on trying to resolve my problem. I have (according to housecall and Trojan Hunter) troj_swizzor.da. My Adaware and Spybot S&D come up with a malware called a lop (I am assuming this is the annoying toolbar that suddenly appeared when I open my internet a few days ago).....lovely little thing it's NOT. SO, I have come across your site and may I say I am impressed and I hope someone can help me. For your reference, I am getting ads popping up against my pop up blockers wishes as well as "undesirable" ads now and then. The latter will not do with 4 kids in my house, please tell me this is fixable. My OS is Windows XP. I downloaded the HighJackThis program and I placed it in it's own file. So, I am sure I have done everything right thus far. I ran HJT and I am posting the log file. I hope to hear from someone soon. Thank You. :)

Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
    • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
    • Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)

    • Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
    • Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol) and select the following:
      • "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
      • "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
      • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
    • Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
      • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
      • "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
      • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
      • "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
    • Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
    • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
    • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.

A quick question

Unread postby kitty_ces_mois » April 10th, 2005, 11:23 am

Hi njustice.....thank you for helping me. I am a bit confused though. You told me to download spysubtract pro, which I did, as well as got the updates.....BUT you didn't mention to run it, unless that is what you meant by "clicking FIX IT", but there was no such option......I have run the program and I don't know if I should remove the programs it comes up before proceeding with everything else you told me to do......sorry.....I just want to be sure to do this right. Oh, BTW, call me Kathy instead of the long user name.

Kathy :)

]

I thought I would be able to do this somewhat easily.....I have done everything you have said up to this point (quote above). Where do I go to delete these files? I can't find them anywhere and I don't know if I'm looking for them the right way.....do I look for these files through exploring my computer and just tossing the files into the recycle bin?....or is there another way?.....You said not to reboot the computer unless you specified it, and I don't know how to get to safe mode unless I reboot and hold F8.....I'm sorry, I'm hopeless.[/quote]

Ok, I have removed a few of the files you requested:

C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3 THIS IS GONE
C:\Program Files\BFGTOO~1 I COUDN'T FIND THIS EXACT FILE BUT I DELETED ALL OF THE TOOLBAR FILES
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\this browse first view THIS SAYS THE FILE IS BEING USED BY ANOTHER PROGRAM AND WILL NOT LET ME DELETE IT
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\FREELO~1 I CAN NOT FIND THIS
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\APPLIC~1\WEBBAR~1 I CAN NOT FIND THIS

I still have the bar that I mentioned when I turn on the internet....except today it is always there. It has an "X" in the top right corner that used to allow me to close it, but today it isn't closing and it is remaining on the bottom of my screen above my start up task bar even when the internet browser is closed. I can't close it at all.

Here is an updated HJT log:

I think I've got it....

Unread postby kitty_ces_mois » April 10th, 2005, 5:36 pm

I went into safe mode and removed that program that was in use....it's now gone and so far so good. The toolbar is gone. Both the top and bottom parts. Thank you so much for your help but I am posting the most recent HJT log so you can give it a look over and see if I'm alright.

Congratulations at last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
a. Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first option, 'Download signed controls', to 'Prompt; set the
second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html
c. IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm
d. Bugoff: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4308.html

4. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

Before adding any other Spyware Detection and Removal programs always check the Rogue Anti-Spyware List for programs known to be misleading, mistaken, or just outright "Foistware". You will find the list here: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware,htm

5. Install 'Spoofstick"
Spoofstick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. This extension is free and installs in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
a. http://www.corestreet.com/spoofstick

6. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. See the links below:
a. ZoneAlarm
b. Kerio

7. Reset System Restore
If you are using Windows ME or Windows XP, please reset your System Restore.
a. Turn off system restore by right clicking on "My Computer" and go to "Properties"->"System Restore" and check the box for "Turn off System Restore". Click "Apply" and then "OK". Restart your computer. Reverse these steps and turn "System Restore" back on and create a new restore point.

8. Use GoogleToolbar - It's free, blocks popups and takes seconds to install. Use the toolbar without the advanced features enabled(check this during install), the toolbar is completely inert--it doesn't send any information to Google whatsoever as you surf.
a. GoogleToolbar

9. RegScrubXP 3.25 - Safely cleans junk out of the Windows. 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition.
a. RegScrubXP 3.25

10. Online Virus Scans - Run these on a regular basis(I usually do about once a month or suspect a problem):
a. http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan ... ncipal.htm
b. http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/
c. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
d. http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

Good luck, and thanks for coming to our forums for help with your security and malware issues.
