Avast shield disabled at startup, etc

Unread postby rbd » April 6th, 2017, 5:43 pm

Hello MR Forum,

Here's my issue

A few weeks ago Avast started picking up more threats than normal (say 2-3 in a week, while normally I was used to 1-2 per month at worst). In this last week, something stranger is happening: after startup, the Behaviour Shield in Avast comes up as disabled, and I have to manually enable it. This happens nearly every time I start up Windows.

I also noticed that it takes longer for the Avast icon to appear on the notification bar, and it does so after the other icons have appeared. Previously it was appearing as 2nd or 3rd.

There is also a noticeable slowdown when I start up my laptop, and also when I start Firefox. Not sure if it's related or simply due to all the software updates installed so far (Win7, Flash, Firefox, etc.)

I can't say that I'm sure I've got some malware, but what happens with Avast is really dodgy.

I would really appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance.

rbd

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the Malware Removal forum and wait for help.

Failure to post replies within 3 days will result in this thread being closed.

Hello rbd,

Welcome back to Malware Removal! My name is mAL_rEm018, but feel free to call me mAL. I will be helping you with your malware related problems :)

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

To make sure everything goes smoothly, I would like you to observe the following rules:
  • You must have Administrator rights, permissions for this computer.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start another topic.
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask!
  • DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  • Don't attempt to install any new software (other than those I ask you to) until your computer is clean.
  • DO NOT post for help at any other forum. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • I advise you to print the instructions if possible, since your internet connection might not be available during some of the fixes.
  • Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear, therefore stick with this topic until I give you the "all clear".

I am currently reviewing your logs and will return as soon as possible, with additional instructions. In the meantime I would like you to read and get acquainted with the following topic: HOW TO GET HELP IN THIS FORUM - everyone must read this, where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.

Hello mAL,

No worries.

Before I go ahead with your first instruction, I have a question on that. It might be silly, but I'd better double-check with you.

I downloaded TCRB from your link, but all I get is the setup file. When I click on it, it obviously asks me to install the program.
Do you want me to install it, or is it not supposed to happen like this?

Thanks,

There are no silly questions when it comes to malware removal. If you are unsure about anything, please feel free to ask. :)

Yes, you need to install the software in order to create the registry backup.

Hello mAL,

I followed your instructions without problems.

Logs below.

=============
FYI (not sure if useful to you)
Yesterday and today, while I was browsing, a number of times Avast blocked a threat from a website called "theinstallfree41 . com". I wasn't going on such website, though. It's strange that when this particular warning came up two days ago, I added that website to Avast's blocked web addresses. Nevertheless, warnings keep coming up about a threat from such website.

Also FYI:
I mostly use Firefox as browser. Very rarely do I use Chrome or IE.

Hello rbd,

Were you on a specific website when the warning came up and could you upload a screenshot then next time this happens?

Did you install the following software on your computer?
TeamViewer 11

Uploading files to Virustotal
  • Please click on the following link: Virustotal
  • Select Choose File, under the File tab.
  • Navigate to the following locations on your computer:
    • C:\Users\Administrator1\Desktop\converter.exe
  • Click on Open and then Scan it!.
  • When the scan is finished copy/paste the web address in your following post.
Note: you can only upload one file at a time.

I noticed that you recently ran ESET and I would like to take a look at the log that was created. It should be in the following location:
C:\users\%userprofile%\appdata\local\temp\log.txt

Open the Start menu and copy/paste the above inside the Search programs and files box and press enter.

I also notice you recently ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I would also like to see the log that was created..
  • Please open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
  • Click History and then select Application Logs.
  • Double-click on the scan log by looking at the timestamp (it should be in the following order: Day/Month/Year Time)
  • Click Export and select Text file (*.txt).
  • In the File name: box, please write MBAM Log and save it to your desktop.
  • Once the process is over, a message will appear stating that the file has been successfully exported. Click OK.
  • Please post the contents of MBAM Log.txt in your next reply.

In your next reply, I would like to see..
  • Answer to my questions.
  • Did you encounter any problem while following the steps?
  • Virustotal link
  • ESET report
  • MBAM Log.txt

Hello mAL,

The warning did come up when I visited a couple of websites in particular. I tend to use the same websites all the time, so the fact that this came up suddenly so often in a few hours is strange.
I will take a screenshot if it happens again. In the meantime I have been able to find Avast Weshield log and I attach here an excerpt of the last few days. You will notice the repeated issue I had especially last sunday. It seems to be the same threat all the time.

- Teamviewer
I had this installed by the guy who set up the camera outside my home. I don't really use it, as I can see the camera images directly through my router when I'm at home. However there was time last year where I wasn't able to connect to my camera, so the camera guy installed me Teamviewer. However a few weeks later he found out what was wrong with the system (the receiver needed to be rebooted), so I was able to connect to the camera directly as I did before.
Basically I used Teamviewer rarely for a few weeks last year, then no more. It can be uninstalled. I didn't like it anyway.
Out of curiosity, is it dangerous?

- Virustotal
I couldn't find any such file. I even run a search for converter.exe on the whole C:\ drive and found nothing. Are you sure I have such file? If so, how do I find it?

- ESET report
Yes, I ran it because I was worried. The first time (a month or more ago) it had found a coupe of issues. The last time it found nothing. Latest log pasted below.
(I learnt to use this tool from this forum, as one of your colleagues ran it. I'm always nervous when I have to use it though, as I have to disable Avast first.)

Re: Avast shield disabled at startup, etc

Hello rbd,

rbd wrote:The warning did come up when I visited a couple of websites in particular. I tend to use the same websites all the time, so the fact that this came up suddenly so often in a few hours is strange.

If you tend to use the same websites, then it might be related to one of these. If you get the Pop-up again, please take note of which site you were on and post it here. I will only ask that you replace "http:" with "hxxp:", for example:

rbd wrote:Basically I used Teamviewer rarely for a few weeks last year, then no more. It can be uninstalled. I didn't like it anyway.
Out of curiosity, is it dangerous?

In this case I wouldn't say that it's dangerous, since you know where it came from. However, this software still has the capability to create a remote connection between two computer, so if you don't use the software then it should be uninstalled.

rbd wrote:I couldn't find any such file. I even run a search for converter.exe on the whole C:\ drive and found nothing. Are you sure I have such file? If so, how do I find it?

That's fine, you can forget about this file. There is a task related to it, but since it's no longer on your computer I'll remove it when I ask you to run a fix.

rbd wrote:In this last week, something stranger is happening: after startup, the Behaviour Shield in Avast comes up as disabled, and I have to manually enable it. This happens nearly every time I start up Windows.

I don't see any signs of active infection in your logs. However, I see several errors related to AVAST! Would you consider uninstalling/re-installing AVAST if I gave you the instructions for safely doing so? Let me know in your next reply.

Removing a program in Windows 7
  • Click the Star Menu and select Control Panel.
  • Click Programs, then Programs and Features.
  • Select the following programs:
    TeamViewer 11
  • Select Uninstall.
  • When prompted select Yes.
  • Answer any questions attentively.
  • When the process is finished, please restart your computer.
Note: you can only remove one program at a time.

I need you to run a search..
  • Please download System look to your desktop.
  • Right-click on SystemLook_x64.exe and select Run as administrator.
  • A window will open. Copy/paste the following inside the window:
    Code: Select all
    :filefind
    *theinstallfree41*

    :Regfind
    theinstallfree41

  • Select Look and the scan will start.
  • After the scan is finished a window will open. Please post the content in your next reply.

I need to see a fresh FRST log..

  • Right-click on FRST64.exe and select Run as administrator.
  • The tool might update, please allow it to do so.
  • Select Scan.
  • When the scan is over two windows will open, FRST.txt and Addition.txt.
  • Please post the contents of both logs in your next reply.

Hello mAL,

- Avast! warning
The warning of blocked threat from Avast came up again tonight, but it was or a different threat from before.
I attach the warning captured with the Snipping Tool - please see "Capture1.jpg" attached. It shows the threat being from hxxp://thepremiumsoftwarebest38.com

The website I was on is: hxxp://cricfree.sx

- Teamviewer
Apologies, I got confused. The software I meant when I said it was installed to view my camera image was NVMS-1000. This is the one I said I don't really use.
As to Teamviewer, the guy who installed the camera asked me to install it, so he could give me assistance remotely. Indeed in one of the essions he installed NVMS-1000.
Anyway I have uninstalled Teamviewer as per your instructions. Should I ever have issues with the camera again, I know that I can install it again to get remote assistance, then uninstall it again, since it is not dangerous.

- Avast!
I'm glad I don't have infections. However it is strange what was happening with Avast! I had this in the past and when I came here something was found indeed, hence why I came on this forum again.
I'm happy to uninstall and re-install Avast! again, as long as it is done in a safe way and it works fine. I don't want to risk being defenseless. Let me know how to do it, then.

Hello rbd,

rbd wrote:I'm glad I don't have infections.

We still have more work to do before I give you the "all clean". :)

Please run the following fix and let me know if you see any improvement..

  • Click Start
  • Type notepad.exe in the search programs and files box and click Enter.
  • A blank Notepad page should open.
    • Copy/Paste the contents of the code box below into Notepad.
Code: Select all

Re: Avast shield disabled at startup, etc

Unread postby rbd » April 12th, 2017, 8:01 pm

Hello mAL,

Fix run without any problems. Log pasted further below.
Start-up time (I mean the time by which all icons appear in the system tray) after reboot is slightly improved. However I can get into Firefox more quickly if I try to open it while the icons in the system tray are still appearing.

The Avast! icon still appears last in the system tray (it used to appear earlier, shortly after the clock). Does it mean Avast! is not on yet right from the beginning? (Because of this, since the issue with the Behaviour shield, I'm not connecting to the network -via ethernet cable- until the Avast! icon shows up and doesn't say that not all shields are on, to avoid risking attacks without full defense. Not sure if it is worth doing so or not).

If you feel safer by doing this, then by all means go ahead. I will say however that Avast! is installed very deeply within your system and will load its services before other system services. This means that even if you don't see the Avast! icon in the system tray, the antivirus is already working in the background.

When I asked you how is the computer behaving, you didn't mention whether you had any more warning while browsing in Firefox. Should you still have them, then it would be a good idea to completely remove Firefox and re-install it. I have included the instructions for doing so below, if you are not experiencing any more warnings, then omit this step and let me know in your next reply.

Please note: By uninstalling and re-installing Firefox, you will lose all your bookmark, so please follow the instructions in the following link to make a backup of them: How to backup and restore my Favorites or Bookmarks => Very important!

Removing a program in Windows 7
  • Click the Star Menu and select Control Panel.
  • Click Programs, then Programs and Features.
  • Select the following programs:
    Mozilla Firefox 52.0.2
  • Select Uninstall.
  • When prompted select Yes.
  • Answer any questions attentively.
  • When the process is finished, please restart your computer.
Note: you can only remove one program at a time.

Next..

Please run the following fix..

  • Click Start
  • Type notepad.exe in the search programs and files box and click Enter.
  • A blank Notepad page should open.
    • Copy/Paste the contents of the code box below into Notepad.
Code: Select all
CreateRestorePoint:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
C:\Users\Pietro\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox

    • Save it to the same folder/directory that FRST.exe is in, naming it as fixlist.txt

Hello mAL,

Thanks, I feel reassured by your explanation about Avast!
(I have been cautiously waiting to plug in the Ethernet cable as I was waiting for the Avast! icon to appear and tell me whether not all the shields are on)

I haven't seen any warning messages on Firefox. I've been on that website again tonight and did not get warnings.
Nevertheless, I thought it would be good to un-install Firefox, as with all the updates that are released so often and installed, I have never done a fresh install.
It feels strange, though, to use IE again after so long time!
Please let me know when I can safely re-install Firefox.
