Malware that survives a reformat.....

Unread postby ThatGimp » November 19th, 2016, 12:06 am

Let me just start by stating this: I have the 3 CDs that came shipped with my PC. I was told that might help.

Alright, So I started noticing my system doing some weird stuff a while ago (many moons.. I dont have an exact timeframe but months. Naturally I probably made the problem worse by trying to fight with it for as long as I have. But while doing so I noticed that my BIOS was set to allow remote reflashing. So, the things that I noticed after that:

Services for remote access kept changing their settings back to enabled and the Services listings for remote access kept getting longer.

Invalid Classes for explorer. (Cannot use taskbar at all, cannot utilize the start menu button in the bottom left hand corner of the screen and eventually I am completely locked out of explorer. Except for the invalid class popups that kept recurring).

Fine, I have another computer I can use for a bit.. Well, the same basic thing was happening on all of my systems. I also noticed workgroup and homegroup and group policy settings were blocking me from some things.

Long story short, practically all of my files are set to share. New users appear after a bit under File Access Settings, Including all users. DBAN seemed ineffective.. but that could easily be me.

Also, windows OS started looking incredibly strange when I migrated to some of the older systems in my house. It's hard to describe. The UAC poppup looked incredibly strange. Not new strange... Cheap immitation Strange.

Long story short: I've tried nuking my hard-drive. I felt clever. Problem still there, and now it is angry. I don't want to make that mistake again. I am clearly out of my depth.

Up first is FRST
After that is Addition

Re: Malware that survives a reformat.....

Unread postby mAL_rEm018 » November 20th, 2016, 2:08 am

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the Malware Removal forum and wait for help.

Failure to post replies within 3 days will result in this thread being closed.

Hello ThatGimp,

Welcome to Malware Removal! My name is mAL_rEm018, but feel free to call me mAL. I will be helping you with your malware related problems :)

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

To make sure everything goes smoothly, I would like you to observe the following rules:
  • You must have Administrator rights, permissions for this computer.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start another topic.
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask!
  • DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  • Don't attempt to install any new software (other than those I ask you to) until your computer is clean.
  • DO NOT post for help at any other forum. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • I advise you to print the instructions if possible, since your internet connection might not be available during some of the fixes.
  • Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear, therefore stick with this topic until I give you the "all clear".

I am currently reviewing you logs and will return as soon as possible, with additional instructions. In the meantime I would like you to read and get acquainted with the following topic: HOW TO GET HELP IN THIS FORUM - everyone must read this, where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.

I have read this and I believe that I understand. I also noted the rules about replying within 3 days. Although I am thinking that I could have waited for your second message to come in. Regardless..

Hi mAL, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.

Hello ThatGimp

ATTENTION: System Restore is disabled

Before we proceed any further we need to make sure that System Restore is enabled. Please do the following:

  • Open the Start menu and type System Restore.
  • Click on Create a restore point.
  • A window entitled System Properties should open.
  • Select the C: drive, under Protection Settings.
  • Click on Configure.

    • Restore system settings and previous versions of files.
  • Select OK.
  • Click on Create.
  • Please enter a name for the Restore point in the description box (i.e., Before Malware Removal).
  • Select Create .
  • Once the process is over, the following message should appear:
The Restore point was created successfully.

Note: if the restore point is unsuccessful, please let me know right-away.

Next..

Backup your registry using TCRB
  • Please download TCRB to your Desktop.
  • Open Tweaking.com Registry Backup.
  • Click on the Backup Registry tab and ensure that all options are checked.

Alright, so searching from the start menu tries to bring up a webpage. I was able to (i believe) get there using control panel/all control panel items/ recovery and clicking the 3rd option which is configure system restore.

the screen after that is system properties. clicked on system protection tab. was able to click my c drive and configure.

So I should switch disable system protection to "Turn on system protection". Right underneathe that is a max usage bar. It was set to 0 bytes. What should it be?

On a side note. If I want to assume that this is a RAI and I have read a proof-of-concept named Rakshasa which is terrifying enough to go defcon 5 on... Would this alter this process at all? If my firmware has been infected can it be trusted to boot from (badUSB can screw with that right?) I do NOT care about any personal data. I just to nuke the crap out of this. Am I able to disconnect all peripherals & hard drives, reflash, nuke hard-drive using DBAN, Install an os, Get security in place, and then connect to the internet? I am kind of concerned about OOB-CCs during this nonsense.

I know I do not know what I am talking about. Which is why I am here. I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page.

Re: Malware that survives a reformat.....

Hello ThatGimp,

I'm not sure I understand your last post.. Are you saying that you want to reformat your computer? If this is what you want, I can give you instructions for doing so. If this is not what you meant, then I will be more than happy to continue checking your computer for malware. Let me know what you want to do in your next reply and we will proceed accordingly.

Thank you,

mAL

Hello mAL,

reformatting is something I have already done. I would gladly try that again.

I was doing a bit of light reading (about 12 hours a day for almost a month) online and stumbled across some scary pieces of malware. Of note worthyness to me were:
badBios
badUSB
probably plenty of others.

badBIOS is something that I found was laughed at in every corner of the world I could access. Except for 1. A proof-of-concept that was released in 2012. It's name is Rakshasa. It's function is to "permanently backdoor a computer."

The 2 1/2 names I have provided are examples of malware living outside of my hard-drive. I was hoping for confirmation that reflashing could be achieved safely (the worry being that infected firmware being used to reflash firmware might not be effective).

As for my files. Assume they are already gone. If nuking makes our lives easier when dealing with this, I want to do it. Problem is that I have done it. Several times. I learned that reformatting my hard-drive tends not to do anything about the MBR that resides in reserved memory bytes on the hard-drive (the last 16 generally IIRC). So I used DBAN (dericks boot and nuke). DBAN is a piece of low level formatting/wiping software. It did not remove my problem either. Which is what led me down the tinfoil hat firmware trail.

This all being said, I have followed the rules about not making any changes to the PC.

So, am I crazy? Because I'm starting to feel like it.

Hello ThatGimp,

I understand your concerns. Please keep in mind that Proof of Concept is just a proof that something is possible. It does not mean that it's already in the wild. I am not saying that it's impossible that your computer caught a firmware malware, only that it's extremely unlikely.

Yes, you should select Turn on system protection. Once this is done, please follow the rest of the instructions in this post:

Next..

Please answer the following questions:
  • Did you upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or Windows 8?
  • If so, did the issues you mentioned in your first post start long after the upgrade?

-----------------------------------------
In your next reply, I would like to see..
  • Were you able to create a Restore Point?
  • Did you create a registry backup with TCRB?
  • Answer to my questions.

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
