1.-I used to be able to switch between Google and IE until today. I decided to make Google the default Browser. Now I don't see the IE icon or anyway to start it.

2.-I also have downloaded Win 10 but haven't installed it yet. I mostly use Google but do use IE once in a while.
Also when I start the computer there is a message that flashes for about 2 seconds. I believe it states something is missing.
Not sure if the Win 10 download has given me a problem.
3.- When I use Outlook for email, it opens with a preview page which I don't like but I'm not sure if we can get rid of it.

FRST Scan and Addition files follow: Note The addition file I ran earlier when I was logged in as a limited user. I don't seem to get al addition file when I run it from the Fred (admin) account.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the Malware Removal forum and wait for help.

Failure to post replies within 3 days will result in this thread being closed.

Hello frerom,

Welcome to Malware Removal! My name is mAL_rEm018, but feel free to call me mAL. I will be helping you with your malware related problems :)

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

To make sure everything goes smoothly, I would like you to observe the following rules:
  • You must have Administrator rights, permissions for this computer.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start another topic.
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask!
  • DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  • Don't attempt to install any new software (other than those I ask you to) until your computer is clean.
  • DO NOT post for help at any other forum. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • I advise you to print the instructions if possible, since your internet connection might not be available during some of the fixes.
  • Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear, therefore stick with this topic until I give you the "all clear".

I am currently reviewing you logs and will return as soon as possible, with additional instructions. In the meantime I would like you to read and get acquainted with the following topic: HOW TO GET HELP IN THIS FORUM - everyone must read this, where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.

Hello frerom,

ATTENTION: System Restore is disabled
Check "winmgmt" service or repair WMI.

Before we proceed any further we need to enable system restore. In order to do this please do the following..

  • Open the Start menu and right-click on Computer.
  • Click on Properties.
  • Select System protection, located on the left.
  • Select the C: drive, under Protection Settings.
  • Click on Configure.
  • A new windows will open. Ensure that the following option is selected:
    • Restore system settings and previous versions of files.
  • Select OK.
  • Click on Create.
  • Please enter a name for the Restore point in the description box (i.e., Before Malware Removal).
  • Select Create.
  • Once the process is over, the following message should appear:
The Restore point was created successfully.

Note: if the restore point is unsuccessful, please let me know right-away.

Next..

I notice that you have the following program installed on your computer:
Tweaking.com - Registry Backup

  • Open Tweaking.com Registry Backup.
  • Click on the Backup Registry tab and ensure that all options are checked.
  • Press on Backup Now.
  • Wait until the backup is complete and exit the program.

Please let me know once the steps above have been completed and I will provide you with more instructions.

Hello frerom,

I don't see any sign of malware in the logs you have provided. There are a few minor issues, however we will deal with them in this post. We will also run an online scan to make sure we didn't miss anything.

Adwcleaner
  • Close all your programs and right-click AdwCleaner.exe and select Run as administrator.
  • Click on Scan.
  • After the scan is over, select Cleaning.
  • Note: All programs will be closed and your computer will be rebooted, therefore I advise you to save any unsaved work.
  • A notepad window will open. Please copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

Please run the following fix..

  • Click Start
  • Type notepad.exe in the search programs and files box and click Enter.
  • A blank Notepad page should open.
    • Copy/Paste the contents of the code box below into Notepad.
Code: Select all

Hi Mal,
Adwcleaner log problem. When I selected Cleaning there were no items for cleaning in the Advcleaner window. On rebppt the computer stalled at IBM Think center Logo. I was able to shut the computer with the power switch. Then I noticed I had my portable back up drive connnected. Removing the drive, computer started normally but no notepad log. Repeated cleaning but still no log.

Eset scan . At the moment I don't think I have access to either IE or Mozilla. Sorry I finally found the IEexplore application. I am doing the ESET scan now.

The FRST log follows:

Hello frerom,

There are two things I would like to address before we continue..

frerom wrote:Sorry I finally found the IEexplore application. I am doing the ESET scan now.

In the future, please refrain from editing your posts. I don't receive any notifications once a post is edited and this can make my job harder since I have to re-write my post and/or can miss important information. If there is anything you forgot to add or any new development, feel free to post a reply.

frerom wrote:Repeated cleaning but still no log.

Never run a "fix" more than once unless I say otherwise, because this could cause serious damage to your computer. In this case you were lucky and nothing happened to your computer. If you are unsure of anything, always ask me first.

That being said, you should be able to find the AdwCleaner log in the following location:
C:\AdwCleaner[s1].txt

Please post the ESET and AdwCleaner[s1].txt logs when ready.

Hi Mal,
I apologize for the editing and rescanning.

I found 3 AdwCleaner(S1,S2,S3).txt logs There are also 2 AdwCleaner(C1,C2).txt logs, and a Quarantine txt file.
Then there also is a Quarantine folder.

I don't believe the ESET scan produced a log file. It reported nothing found. I have looked at the ESET folder. The Quarantine folder is empty.

Let me know if you want all the files from the Adwcleaner folder. About 90 kb for all the txt files.
What do I do with the Quarantine folder.

There is no need to apologize :)

We will take care of the Quarantine folder in my closing speech.

Hi Mal,

The computer is running much faster. The message about something missing on boot up appears to be gone.

My main issue now is what do I do about WIN 10. I believe it's ready to install. Do I upgrade or forget about it.? We have a HP Win 10 portable and I am not impressed. I'm not used to all the new terms and it appears to be slow.

Does MRU support WIN 10 upgrade?

Hi Mal,
One other issue. I have 2 folders of Internet Explorer. One in programs and one in programs X86. Is this OK?

Hello frerom,

frerom wrote:My main issue now is what do I do about WIN 10. I believe it's ready to install. Do I upgrade or forget about it.? We have a HP Win 10 portable and I am not impressed. I'm not used to all the new terms and it appears to be slow.

I personally have decided not to install Windows 10 on my computer for several reasons. The two main reasons are that there are several issues when it comes to privacy within Windows 10 and the other being that I do not appreciate Microsoft trying to force me to "upgrade". From what I have seen in the forums, many people are quite satisfied with Windows 10, while others feel the opposite. Ultimately, the choice is yours to make and you might consider doing some research on Google to see the different opinions and reviews. However, if you are dissatisfied with Windows 10 on your other computer, then it might be a good idea to stay with Windows 7.

This is nothing to worry about. Those two folders are there to ensure that Internet Explorer is compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows.

I have good news..your computer appears to be all clean! :) Please follow the steps below and then you'll be all set to go.

Let's remove the tools we have been using so far..
  • Please download Delfix to your desktop.
  • Right-click on delfix_1.011.exe and select Run as administrator.
  • Check the following boxes:
    • Remove disinfection tools
    • Purge system restore
  • You can now safely remove any tools and/or logs that may remain on your computer.

You should also read and get acquainted with the following topic: COMPUTER SECURITY - a short guide to staying safer online , which goes into depth on how to keep your computer secure. I bookmarked it for easy reference and so should you.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask, otherwise please let me know and I will request for this topic to be closed.
