Were there any software updates to your laptop's modem at that time?
To check this click on the start button,
Type "Action Center" in the "Run" bar.
Click on "Windows Update" at the bottom left hand column.
Click on "View update history" to bring up "Review your update History.
Check to see if there were any software updates to your laptop's Intel(R) Centrino(R) modem.

Hi SpecialEd19,

I was getting to the subject about what you call "settings and maintenance" in your pm. Part of malware removal is checking and reinstalling damaged drivers corrupted from malware.
What makes your case so difficult is that you have been running "torrents". When you use torrents, you are by-passing all security settings provided by the operating system and anti-virus/malware programs. The downloaded files which are most likely infected, corrupt your operating system and cause havoc in the registry as well.
When the problem cannot be rectifed a recommendation of format and reinstall the OS is made. But we are not yet at that bridge.

Time for some housekeeping

Please download Delfix and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click on delfix.exe and select "Run as administrator" to run it.
  • Check the following boxes then click on Run.

    • Remove disinfection tools
  • All tools we used to clean your computer should be gone now.
  • You can now delete any tools/logs we used if they remain on your computer.

Protection Programs
Don't forget to re-enable any protection programs we disabled during your fix.

Please go to this website and check your driver to see if it the newest or most recent.
Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 2230

In the center of the page under "Latest Downloads" Click on "Automatically detect and update drivers and software" and verify that you have the latest software and drivers.

I thought that when you had me cleanup all the files that you were done. According to Intel, I have the correct and up-to-date wireless driver.

I just noticed when looking at my connection via Metageek Inssider that suddenly I am using channels 1 and 5. I didn't even know I could use two channels at once let-alone channel 5. Still having the same problems, sporadic connections and incredibly slow when connected.

Best,

Hi SpecialEd19,

When you "Google"
Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 2230
there are massive posts about this wireless card with the same issue.
Either it is a driver issue or the infections from the files downloaded from torrants corrupted the OS and drivers for the network connection.
If it is not the drivers - you checked - then it is file corruption and that means format and re-install the operating system.

Let me know what you decide about this.

Wow, I'm not sure if I'm up to that (format and reinstall) but I guess that's where we are at this point. I don't have a copy of WIndows 7, just what is on my laptop and the activation key.

Thanks,

Ed
