Windows Update Error... strange things are afoot.

Unread postby LibbyBerry1 » February 25th, 2014, 11:40 pm

So, I was trying to watch some good ole' tv on my computer streaming from abcfamily (yes, I'm lame like that) and twice, my windows had a strange error, went blank and restarted. I got it all up and I thought to myself, self... it's been a while since you've seen a windows update. It might be good to do that. So, I search Windows Update and try to check for updates... and I get an error that says Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer. I tried that. Nothing new. So, I google and end up on Microsoft's Fix It page.. they fix some things but can't fix whatever is wrong with this and they show some other cryptic thing that I am unsure of. And now I'm here. Someone here once helped me with fixing my mom's computer (my step-dad loves the porn) and so I was hoping that someone could help me (I just like Pretty Little Liars).

Here is my DDS log:

Hi LibbyBerry1,

I'm Gary R, and I'm here to help you if I can.

The logs you've posted don't show any obvious signs of infection, however they do show that you've had a problem with your video driver, which is probably the reason for your TV viewing problems.

This forum specialises in removing Malware, and it may be that we have to refer you to a forum that specialises in driver/hardware problems to resolve your issues, however before we do that, I'd like to explore a little further, so that we can try and determine a little more precisely what's gone wrong.

To do that, I need you to post me a minidump file that your computer has created so that I can have a look at it.

The file will be found at ... C:\Windows\Minidump\022514-56316-01.dmp

You'll need to attach it to your next post. However this forum does not support .dmp files, so rename it to 022514-56316-01.txt before you try to attach it.

Next ...

Please download Farbar Service Scanner ... by Farbar and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click FSS.exe to run it. (Vista - W7 users: Please right click on FSS.exe and select Run As Administrator).
  • Select the following options ....
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press the Scan button.
  • When finished, a text file named FSS.txt will be created on your desktop.
  • Copy/Paste the contents in your reply please.

Thank you for taking the time to look at this for me. I really appreciate the help.

I have attached the minidump and here is the FSS text:

Which would suggest that the problem is caused by atikmpag.sys which is a Miniport driver from AMD ... http://www.systemlookup.com/search.php? ... pag.sys&s=

Might be worth seeing if there's an update for the driver, the following site ... http://www.runscanner.net/lib/atikmpag.sys.html ... provides a link to a possible driver download/update.

On the matter of Windows Updates, there's no indication from the scan you ran that there's anything wrong with your Windows Update setup, in which case any problems might be being caused by your Firewall/Anti-Virus settings. They're often the culprit with update problems. You could try temporarily disabling your FW and AV whie you attempt to perform a manual update check, and see if that resolves things. Don't forget to re-enable both as soon as you're finished updating.
