The kohl's one says i won a $500 gift card. at the bottom of the box it says 'This ad served by Severe Weather Alert. Click here to learn more'

IN IE

Re: promotional popups at any site that i visit

Unread postby Wingman » October 1st, 2013, 1:09 pm

Hello blondlily57 ... Welcome to the forum.

My name is Wingman, and I'll be helping you with any malware problems.
The logs I request can take a while to research, so please be patient.

Before we begin...please read and follow these important guidelines, so things will proceed smoothly.
  1. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  2. You must have Administrator rights, permissions for this computer.
  3. DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so or install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process.
  4. Only- post your problem at (1) one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  5. Print each set of instructions...if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  6. Only- reply to this thread, do not start another ... Please, continue responding, until I give you the "All Clean"
  7. Failure to respond for 3 days, will result in your topic being closed.

Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.

The steps presented in these posts are for this person and machine ONLY. Do not apply these steps to your own system, without the guidance of a trained malware removal helper. Doing so, may possibly damage your system, preventing it from starting.

Malware removal:
Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care, not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

For your safety and protection, I would advise backing up all your important documents, personal data files and photos to a CD or DVD drive as some infections may render your computer unbootable during or before the disinfection process. The safest practice is not to backup any files with the following file extensions: exe, .scr, .ini, .htm, .html, .php, .asp, .xml, .zip, .rar, .cab as they may be infected.

Please read all instructions carefully before executing and perform the steps, in the order given.
lf, you have any questions or problems, executing these instructions, <<STOP>> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Step 1.
Create a System Restore Point - W8
  1. Click the Start button Image, then right-click on Computer, then click Properties.
  2. In the left pane, click System protection. If UAC prompts, allow it.
  3. Click the System Protection tab... then click Create.
  4. In the System Protection dialog box, type a description... then click Create.
A Restore Point will be created and you should receive a message: "The restore point was created successfully."
  5. Click Close and exit.
< STOP > If you did not successfully complete this step. < STOP > Do not continue with any other steps, post back and let me know!

Step 2
Registry Backup (TCRB)
Please download tweaking.com_registry_backup_setup.exe ... download and save it to your desktop.
Double click on the "...setup.exe" program and install the program. Let the install use the default installation. How to tutorial here.

Once the program is installed...
  1. Double click the Tweaking.com Registry Backup icon ... on your Desktop to open the program.
  2. It should open with the Backup Registry tab selected and all file options checked. Check any that are not already checked.
  3. Click on Backup Now to create a backup of your Registry.
You'll see "Waiting for Volume Shadow Copy snapshot..." this may take a few moments, just be patient.
  4. When completed you should see a message saying something like ... Successful ??/?? Registry Files Backed Up ... ?? is total number of files, both numbers should match.
  5. Close and exit the program.
If you successfully created a TCRB backup of the registry, please continue...

Step 3.
Uninstall Programs
I need you to uninstall some program(s).
  1. From the top or bottom right corner... a widget panel appears, select Settings.
  2. Select, click Control Panel to open.
  3. Depending on your current view setting ...
    • Double click on Programs and Features.
      or
    • Under Programs, click on Uninstall a program.
  4. Locate the following program(s):
    Java 7 Update 25
    Java Auto Updater
    Severe Weather Alerts
    SugarSync Manager
    Vafmusic7 Toolbar for IE
  5. Select the program and click on Uninstall to uninstall it.
    Carefully read any prompts...
Some uninstallers prompt in a way to trick you into keeping the program, sometimes, preventing them from being uninstalled again!
  6. Repeat steps 4 - 5 for each program in the list. When finished... Close the Control Panel window.

Step 4.
Junkware Removal Tool Image
  1. Please download JRT.exe ... by thisisu and save it to your desktop.
  2. Please temporarily disable your security/protection software as found here, to avoid potential conflicts.
  3. If running Vista or W7-W8... right-click jrt.exe and select "Run as Administrator",
    otherwise just double click it.
The tool will open and start scanning your system. Please be patient, it can take a while depending on your system.
On completion, a log file JRT.txt is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  4. Please copy and paste the contents of JRT.txt and post in your next reply.

Step 5.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. System Restore point and TCRB backup created successfully?
  3. Programs uninstalled?
  4. JRT.txt file contents.
  5. How is the computer behaving?

Thanks,
Wingman

Hello blondlily57,

OK... I'm not sure why JRT was unable to delete the items found... did you run this under an account that has Administrative privileges?
Right-clicked and selected "Run as Administrator"?

You do have an Antivirus product installed, Windows Defender, it is part of the Windows 8 installation by default.

Please create the same set of backups and restore points as before... we'll try a different cleaner.
Please take your time and read the instructions carefully, if you have any questions ask before doing something you are not sure of...

Step 3.
AdwCleaner - Search
Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode, save it to your desktop.
  1. Close ALL open programs, including your Internet browsers.
  2. Right click on adwcleaner.exe and select "Run as administrator" to run it.
  3. Click on Search.
  4. A logfile C:\AdwCleaner[Rn].txt will automatically open after the scan has finished. [Rn] n=number of run
  5. Please post the content of the C:\AdwCleaner[Rn].txt logfile in your next reply.

Step 4.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please save any items you were working on... close any open programs. You may be asked to reboot your machine.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. If needed...Tutorial w/screenshots
Alternate download sites available here or here.
  1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  2. Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  3. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  4. When installation has finished, make sure you have the check boxes set this way:
    • Check Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Check Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Uncheck Enable free trial of Malwarebytes Anti-malware PRO ... You may opt for this trial later, if desired.
    • Click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  5. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    On the Scanner tab:
    1. Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    2. Then click on the Scan button.
    3. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    4. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    5. Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
    1. Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    2. Check all items found... then click on Remove Selected.
    3. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
    4. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
The log can also be found here:
      C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
    5. Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

    Step 4.
Please include in your next reply:
    1. Any problem executing the instructions?
    2. System Restore point and TCRB backup created successfully?
    3. AdwCleaner scan results.
    4. How is the computer behaving?

Thanks,

Did you download the AdwCleaner file to your Desktop?
Then right-click on the file... there should be a context menu shown, with the option to "Run As Administrator".
