Programs fail to launch outside of Safe Mode

Unread postby spinach » March 29th, 2013, 3:26 pm

[previous, closed thread]

A few minutes after I log in, my computer becomes dramatically slower and programs no longer launch. I have avoided this problem for the past few months by dual booting into Linux or using Safe Mode with Networking.

Norton Internet Security used to be acting suspiciously (it was irreversibly disabled), but now, after I used an online scanner while in Safe Mode, it appears to be fine.

It appears that the malware may be connected to some Service, because my computer is fine, even when not in Safe Mode if I disable most services using msconfig. Once I try logging in with all services enabled, the familiar symptoms recur.

I am posting this topic and had generated these log files while in Safe Mode.

Re: Programs fail to launch outside of Safe Mode

Unread postby deltalima » March 29th, 2013, 5:57 pm

Hi spinach,

A few questions before we start

Adobe Flash CS3 Professional [this is a really old internet trial version whose license has expired; not pirated software]

Why not uninstall it if the license has expired? Does the program still work?

Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 SharePoint Developer Tools
Microsoft Visual Studio Professional 2012

Is the computer used for software development work?
How were the licenses for these programs obtained?

Thanks for responding DeltaLima,

I have unsuccessfully attempted several times to uninstall Adobe Flash CS3 in Safe Mode, although the uninstaller may work outside of Safe Mode (have not yet tried). Flash CS3 doesn't let me do anything because the 30-day trial period has expired.

I received a free student license for Microsoft Visual Studio from DreamSpark when I took Foundations of Computer Graphics in 2012 on edX. I have not used it since.

Hi spinach,

OK, we really need to see what is happening in normal mode.

Can you boot into normal mode and run DDS then post the logs?

Here is DDS.txt, produced while in Normal Mode with all Services enabled. I generated it independently of Attach.txt, because on my first three tries my computer stopped functioning before both could be created.

Tell me if you need Attach.txt; if you do, I will try to generate Attach.txt independently of DDS.txt.

Re: Programs fail to launch outside of Safe Mode

Unread postby deltalima » March 30th, 2013, 12:59 pm

Hi spinach,

Welcome to the forum.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Please note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please do not run any scans or make any changes to the system unless I ask you too.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If after 3 days you have not responded to this topic, it will be closed, and you will need to start a new one.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Windows 7 and Vista users
The programs I ask you to run need to be run in Administrator Mode by... Right clicking the program file and selecting: Run as Administrator.
Additionally, the built-in User Account Control (UAC) utility, if enabled, may prompt you for permission to run the program.
When prompted, please select: Allow. Reference: User Account Control (UAC) and Running as Administrator

  • Please download this tool from Microsoft.
  • Double click on MGADiag.exe to run it (Right click and choose "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7).
  • Click Continue.
  • The program will run. It takes a while to finish the diagnosis, please be patient.
  • Once done, click on Copy.
  • Open Notepad and paste the contents in the window.
  • Save this file and copy/paste it in your next reply.
