Help needed removing isearch malware

Unread postby bluefringes » March 27th, 2013, 4:58 pm

Hi, I accidentally allowed isearch.fantastigames.com/465 to be installed on my dad's pc on March 23rd. I went to imgsend.com to see some pics that were sent to my cellphone and the site told me I needed to download gimp to see the pics. The isearch malware was installed with gimp. I called Microsoft and they sent me a 30 day free trial of Hitman Pro. I downloaded it at http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro/ and ran it, but it did not remove or list isearch as being on the pc. I couldn't find anything to uninstall so I decided to look for things to uninstall by date, so I immediately uninstalled everything that was listed as being installed on March 23rd, and my landing page and searches on Firefox went back to normal. I also did a system restore on the 23rd to a few days earlier in an attempt to get things back to working right. But today, March 26th, my dad signed on and the isearch address had become his landing page on Google Chrome. I went into Chrome and reset his landing page to Google, but the yellow light on the front of the pc is constantly blinking now like a program is running in the background, and the pc is slower, so I'm thinking something is still hiding on the pc.

Re: Help needed removing isearch malware

Unread postby nunped » March 27th, 2013, 7:53 pm

Hello bluefringes, and welcome to the forum.

My name is nunped and I'll be helping you with any malware problems. I'm an Undergraduate trainee here, and as such my posts to you have to first be checked by a Teacher, because of this my replies to your posts may be slightly delayed. Please be patient and I'm sure we'll be able to resolve your problems.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Here are some guidelines for the cleaning process to run as easy as possible.

  1. Please read this topic: ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.
  2. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only! Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  3. You must have Administrator rights permissions for this computer.
  4. DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  5. DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  6. Only post your problem at one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  7. Only reply to this thread. Do not start another thread.
  8. The absence of symptoms does not imply the absence of malware. Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean".
  9. No Reply Within 3 Days will result in your topic being closed!

Read through these instructions with your full attention.
Please ask first if you have any doubts.

I am currently reviewing your logs and will return, as soon as possible, with additional instructions.

Hi bluefringes,

Step 1 - Uninstall Programs
  1. Click on Start
  2. Copy and paste the value below, into the Start Search entry box:
Depending on your current view setting ...
    • Double click on Programs and Features.
    • Under Programs, click on Uninstall a program.
  3. Locate the following programs:
    Coupon Companion Plugin
    PC Cleaners
    WildTangent Games App (HP Games)
    HitmanPro 3.7
    McAfee Security Scan Plus

  4. Select the program and click on Uninstall to uninstall it.
  5. Repeat steps 3 - 4 for each program in the list.
  6. Reboot your computer after this.

Step 2 - adwCleaner
Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Right click on adwcleaner.exe and select " Run as administrator " to run it.
  • Click on Search.
  • A logfile will automatically open after the scan has finished.
  • Close the adwCleaner window, click ok to the prompt.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[R1].txt as well.

Step 3 - OTL
Please download OTL by Old Timer. Save it to your Desktop.
If you can't download the exe file, try these links:
