!avast service will not run after malware infection/removal

Unread postby goatnuck » March 8th, 2013, 4:25 pm

My neighbours dropped off their computer for me to take a look, after they attempted to remove some malware themselves and ran into problems following the removal. The computer had an expired version of McAfee when it was infected. They installed SuperAntiSpyware, but could not get it to work. They then installed MalwareBytes which deleted 4-5 items. Now when the computer is started you get two alert windows titled RunDLL. The body of one message is "There was a problem starting C:\Users\Nimrod\AppData\Roaming\svene.dll. The specified module could not be found." The second alert is the same, but the missing DLL is wcaun.dll.

I uninstalled MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware and installed the free version of !avast Antivirus, but the !avast service will not start. When I try to manually start it I get an alert that says, "Windows could not start the !avast Antivurs service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."

I'm looking for some help on ensuring all malware has been removed and undoing the effects of the malware. I'm hopeful that fully cleaning the PC will allow the !avast service to start up.

Thanks in advance! Here are the DDS logs.

Unread postby deltalima » March 9th, 2013, 5:41 pm

Hi goatnuck,

Welcome to the forum.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Please note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please do not run any scans or make any changes to the system unless I ask you too.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If after 3 days you have not responded to this topic, it will be closed, and you will need to start a new one.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Windows 7 and Vista users
The programs I ask you to run need to be run in Administrator Mode by... Right clicking the program file and selecting: Run as Administrator.
Additionally, the built-in User Account Control (UAC) utility, if enabled, may prompt you for permission to run the program.
When prompted, please select: Allow. Reference: User Account Control (UAC) and Running as Administrator

Before we get started, please check with your neighbour how he obtained the license for Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 as this product is not normally available for home use.
If he does not have a valid license then it will need to be removed before we continue.

Download and run OTL
Download OTL by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it (Right click and choose "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7).
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extras.txt <-- Will be minimized
  • Please post the contents of these 2 Notepad files in your next reply.

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file (Right click and choose "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7). If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Please post the GMER log along with OTL.txt and Extras.txt from the OTL scan into your next reply.

Hi deltalima, thanks so much for your willingness to help!

Office 2010 Pro Plus is not currently licensed and my neighbor gave me the go ahead to uninstall it and I have done so. Here are the logs you requested. I had to run GMER in safe mode FYI.

Hi goatnuck,

Your logs show signs of a Remote Access Infection on your computer.

Service C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\b971551413d22bc6.sys (*** hidden *** ) [BOOT] b971551413d22bc6 <-- ROOTKIT !!!

These indicate you are infected with .... rootkit / backdoor

A Remote Access Infection will allow the person who infected your computer to use your computer as if he was sat in front of it, and he may ....

  • Steal bank account details.
  • Steal credit card numbers.
  • Steal your personal details.
  • Modify your computer to make it easier to infect.
  • Use your computer as part of a botnet, to distribute porn or spam.
  • Anything else he cares to think of ..... and most attackers are very inventive people.

You are strongly advised to do the following immediately ....

  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers.
  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions, and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your online passwords -- for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

Do not change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer, because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

The only way to remove these type of infections and leave yourself with a secure computer, is to re-format your hard drive and re-install Windows.

It is impossible to discover all of the modifications that your attacker may have made to your computer while he had access to it, and though we may be able to remove all the obvious signs of infection from your computer, and leave you with an apparently fully functioning machine, that does not mean it is secure.

If you use your computer for any of the following ....

  • Online Banking.
  • Finances or credit of any kind.
  • Filling out your tax forms online or offline.

.... then a re-format and re-install should be the only choice you should make.

If you insist, we are prepared to help you "clean" your machine, but we strongly advise you against this course of action, and you must understand that although we may be able to restore your computer to a usable condition, it will NOT be secure until a re-format and re-install is performed, and should not be used for any of the activities listed above.

Re: !avast service will not run after malware infection/remo

Hi deltalima, thanks for the diagnosis. I think I will go ahead and re-format and re-install the OS. Is it safe to re-install from the recovery partition? Could the recovery partition have been modified remotely?

Cheers,

Hi goatnuck,

Is it safe to re-install from the recovery partition?

It should be OK.

Could the recovery partition have been modified remotely?

There is a slight possibility that this could happen.

If after the re-install you have any concerns then run a scan with DDS and open a new topic here with the new logs and one of our helpers will give the system a thorough check.
