Hi blackhillsgalsbff!

Although you're still experiencing some issues with IE, there are no overt signs of infection from our scans.
I have to stress on the fact that the only way to be sure you are clean is to reinstall.

Hello, nunped,
Is there a way I can uninstall and reinstall IE? Would that resolve these issues?

Hi blackhillsgalsbff,

You can try reinstalling (for some help, you can look here).
However, we can't be sure if the problems you are experiencing are remnants of the infection or if they can be resolved with the reinstall.

We went as far as we could with our clean-up processes.

Please, let me know if you have further questions.

Hello, nunped,
The steps there, basically, are:

1.Uninstall Windows XP SP3.
2.Uninstall Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8.
3.Reinstall Windows XP SP3.

Then, I suppose I am to reinstall IE 8. How do I do this without IE? How do I get on-line? Does it cost anything to reinstall IE 8?

Can I repave through the BIOS Setup?
Is BIOS Setup>Maintenance>Load Defaults resetting the factory settings for everything?

Hi blackhillsgalsbff,

You can download other browser like Firefox, Chrome or Opera.
Before uninstalling anything, please download SP3 installer from here.
When you reinstall SP3, IE8 shall be installed automatically.

Does it cost anything to reinstall IE 8?

No.

No, that will only reset BIOS settings. It's definitely a bad idea to mess up with BIOS, as you can turn out with an unbootable computer.

Through Dell forums, I've found this tutorial to restore Ctrl+F11 command. You can try that first if you feel it's executable.

Also, please read again carefully our tutorial about repaving. You can find there some further instructions and links to Dell.

If none of the above links and information solves your problem, you should contact Dell Support as it's getting beyond our scope of intervention.

Hi blackhillsgalsbff!

Good news and you're very welcome :)
Your computer appears to be free from malware.

Now, some clean-up steps:

OTL-Cleanup
You should still have this on your desktop, if so, please ignore the download instructions.
Please download OTL Save it to your Desktop.
  1. Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
Vista-W7 users: Right click on OTL.exe select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If prompted by UAC, please allow it.
  2. Press the CleanUp button.
  3. When done, you will be prompted to reboot your system to finish file removal... please select OK to reboot your computer.
If you did not reboot your computer normally, please do so now, before continuing.

Create a new System Restore Point (SRP)
Now that you're clean, it's the best time to create a clean System Restore Point, and delete the previous, infected ones.
  1. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  2. Select Create a restore point and press Next.
  3. Type a name for the new SRP like All Clean then press Create.
  4. When finished press Close.
Remove old SRP entries
  1. Go to Start > Run type in: cleanmgr and press OK.
Wait until Disk Cleanup finish calculating.
  2. Then select the More Options tab.
  3. In the System Restore section, press Clean up.
  4. Reply Yes to the prompt.
All existing restore points will be deleted, except the new one you just created.

Don't forget to re-enable your security programs!

Update your Antivirus programs and other programs regularly. This is one good way to avoid new threats. The following websites can be used to check if you need any update.
Secunia Personal Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check
FileHippo.com Update Checker - © Copyright FileHippo.com

Stay informed.

Some further advice related to the infection we detected at the beginning:
All passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for banking, email, eBay, Paypal and online forums.
You should consider them to be compromised. They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one. If not, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach. Because your computer was compromised please read How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

Although the backdoor has been identified and appears to have been removed, your PC may be compromised and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again.
It is dangerous and incorrect to assume that because the backdoor has been removed the computer is now secure.
Further, in some instances an infection may have caused so much damage to your system that it cannot be completely cleaned or repaired. The malware may leave so many remnants behind that security tools cannot find them.
Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and re-installation of the operating system (OS).
This decision will have to be made by you...

Please reply to this post so I know you have read it. If you don't have any further questions this thread will be closed.

Safe surfing! ;)
