Ctrl+A is a standard Windows shortcut used on all versions of Windows. It works on all Windows built-in programs.

If your Windows standard shortcuts don't work, it's because someone managed to change them, or because your System is corrupt.
To see whether other programs have been changed, Open Wordpad, type a few lines, and see whether Crtl+A selects all or not.
If it's only Notepad that is corrupt, I would suggest installing Notepad++ and using it instead of Notepad.

Glad we could help.

Wordpad has the same problem.
Someone managed to corrupt my OS.

Do you suggest a reformat?

I wouldn't give up yet.
You can look at your Control panel > Mouse settings and see if any can be used to change things.
You could also look at Updates to see if there is an optional update for the mouse driver.
There are often Hotkey settings indirectly available in the "Mouse" section, aspecially if it's a laptop..

Have a look at similar issues here:

I looked to that section and there's no new driver.

Thanks

durden83,
Let's try this to see whether there happen to be any incorrect entries in the keyboard registry
Are you using a standard keyboard with a desktop machine?
---------------------------------------------
Please download SystemLook from the link below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror (32-bit)

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :reg
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} /s

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished (it will be quick), a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The results log can also be found on your Desktop, entitled SystemLook.txt

Due to Lack of Response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
