Unread postby trapdoor2 » August 21st, 2012, 10:03 pm

PC appears to work fine...except it cannot connect with the internet nor will it connect with my wireless printer. I'm told that my browser may have been hijacked. Unread postby wannabeageek » August 22nd, 2012, 1:44 pm

Hello trapdoor2 , and Welcome to MalWare Removal forums!

My name is wannabeageek and I'll be helping you with any malware problems.
Please be aware that some of the logs I may ask for can be very complex and can take a long time to decipher.
I am a volunteer here with a job and family so I ask that you be patient when waiting for replies.
I am a MRU Undergraduate trainee here, and as such my posts to you have to first be checked by a Teacher, because of this my replies to your posts may be slightly delayed.
Please be patient and I'm sure we'll be able to resolve your problems.
Before we begin...please read and follow these important guidelines, so things will proceed smoothly.
  1. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  2. You must have Administrator rights, permissions for this computer.
  3. DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  4. DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  5. Only- post your problem at (1) one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  6. Print or Save to Notepad each set of instructions...if possible because your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  7. Malware is often buggy and can be very unstable, with that in mind it is advisable to backup any important data before we begin.
  8. Only- reply to this thread, do not start another ... Please, continue responding, until I give you the "All Clean"
  9. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  10. If you have any P2P applications installed such as BitTorrent, uTorrent, Limewire etc etc, you must uninstall them before we begin.
  11. If you are using Cracked or Illegal software you will be asked to uninstall it or your thread will be locked and all help will cease.

I am currently reviewing your log and will return, as soon as possible, with additional instructions. In the meantime...
Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.

Please read all instructions carefully before executing and perform the steps, in the order given.
If you have any questions or problems executing these instructions, <<STOP>> do not proceed, but post back with the question or problem.

No Reply Within 3 Days Will Result In Your Topic Being Closed!!

Thanks,
wannabeageek

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Hi wannabeageek,

Thanks for taking on my problem! I have read and understand all the FAQs and Guidelines here at MR. I'll do whatever you see fit and I'll try my best to hit it to the letter. Fortunately, I have access to a seperate PC (my wife's laptop) so I can read this forum while working on the other. I'm a patient guy, so no worries there; verbosity...there's a problem! :)

I have a stand-alone 1tb backup drive, which contains a recent (couple of weeks ago) backup. No big issue there, I haven't created anything recently that can't be rebuilt if necessary.

I did start this process with my IT guy at work. His advice got me to this point...but I haven't done anything else. He talked to me a few minutes ago and recommended doing a System Restore to a date prior to the problem (which would be prior to 08/17/2012). However, now that I've started with y'all, I'll not do anything until you tell me to. BTW, the PC in question is my personal home Laptop...no business done on it of any kind.

Hello trapdoor2,

Thank you for your patience... :)

P2P Advisory!
IMPORTANT There are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs installed on your computer.
Pando

Also, uninstall these as well since they are in need of updating.
Adobe Reader
Ask Toolbar
Ask Toolbar Updater
Java Auto Updater
Java(TM) 6 Update 33

As long as you have the P2P program(s) installed, per Forum Policy, I can offer you no further assistance.
If you choose NOT to remove the program(s), please indicate that in your next reply and this topic will be closed.

Otherwise, please perform the following steps:

For safety reason (to have a good registry to restore if needed), I will ask you to create a System Restore Point (SRP) before most of my instructions sets...

Step 1.
Restore point
Create a restore point using Vista
  1. Open up the Start Menu and right-click on "Computer", and then select "Properties".
  2. Now select the "System Protection" tab to get to the System Restore section.
  3. Click the "Create" button to create a new restore point. You'll be prompted for a name, and you might want to give it a useful name that you'll be able to easily identify.
type in the name "working infected restore point", then click the crate button below.
This way we will know that it is the last working restore point if someting goes wrong.
  4. Click the Create button, and then the system will create the restore point.

A new restore point will be created called ... "working infected restore point"... accessible from the normal System Restore process.
:stop: If you did not successfully complete this step. :stop: Do not continue with any fix steps, post back and let me know!

Step 2.
Remove P2P and other listed Program(s)
  1. Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Programs and Features.
  2. Locate the following program:
    Adobe Reader
    Ask Toolbar
    Ask Toolbar Updater
    Java Auto Updater
    Java(TM) 6 Update 33
    Pando
  3. Click on the Change/Remove button to uninstall it.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each program listed.
  4. When the program(s) have been uninstalled... Close Control Panel.
By using any form of P2P networking to download files you can anticipate infestations of malware to occur. The P2P program
itself, may be safe but the files may not... use P2P at your own risk! Keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation.
Reference... siting risk factors, using P2P programs: How to Prevent the Online Invasion of Spyware and Adware

Step 3.
New DDS Scan
  1. Please download DDS ... by sUBs. Save it to your desktop. Alternate download link here.
Disable any script blocking software you have running before running DDS.
  2. Please double click dds.com to run the tool. (File name will be different if alternate download used).
Vista - W7 users: You must right click on the file above and select "Run As Administrator" to run the tool.
A black window will open with some instructions/comments...
  3. When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
Caution: The above logs will NOT be saved... you must save them to your desktop.
  4. Please post both the DDS.txt and Attach.txt files in your next reply.

Please include in your next reply:
  1. Do you have any problems executing the instructions?
  2. Contents of a DDS.txt log file
  3. Contents of a Attach.txt log file
  4. How is the computer behaving?

Thanks,
wannabeageek

Back again!

1) Posted below
2) No problems following instructions.
3) Internet connection started working again!

However... a few minutes into the session McAfee popped up with a warning saying the system was vulnerable and invoked something called "Virtual Technician". This appeared to scan the computer...in the end, it found problems, initiated a "fix" and then rebooted the computer. Afer the reboot, no internet again.

Then...a minute after the reboot, I got a blue-screen-of-death with the code "Bugcode_usb_driver" and the system rebooted.

I got the bluescreen again (same code) after which I let it reboot into safe-mode-networking (where it is stable and internet access is ok). I've gotten a "Your Computer is at Risk" flag from McAfee just now. I think I'm going to shut it all down and wait for your recommendations.

Back to square one. It appeared to me that after the OTL fix, McAfee couldn't find something it needed in the registry and attempted to fix it.

What do you want me to do?

Hello trapdoor2,

Let us try and determine the cause of the BSOD. Since the system did initially boot up and connect to the internet before crashing with McAfee's, I suspect the culprit may actually be McAfee's. We need the code(s) to verify this. If this is the case, it is not a malware problem per se but a software/hardware configuration issue. There are other sites better able to deal with those issues as our focus here is malware removal.

We Need to Diagnose Your BlueScreen
  1. When you boot your machine, press F8 to list the startup options, exactly as you would if you were trying to enter Safe Mode
  2. Select "Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure", as shown here:
    Image
  3. When your system BSODs, write down the STOP error code, as well as any written out error message back here. The STOP error will always appear, but the message may not. You are looking for this:
    Image

Please post back with the "MESSAGE", if visible;
the "STOP:" code;
and the name of the file below the stop code.

Thank you for your patience,

Yes, McAfee must have a problem, the "virtual technican" program appears at boot, cannot connect to the internet and aborts. Then pc finishes loading. Actually, this time it is back to being connected to the internet once it completed loading. Hmmmm.

Ok...no BSOD (after 30min). Now I see (in my email, that I can finally upload) that McAfee is mandating an update (8/27/12). From reading between the lines, they appear to be dealing with a problem that put some machines offline! More hmmmmm...

So, it appears that your OTL program indeed 'fixed' something...but as you said, it was probably something McAfee created (ie, not Malware).

I'm going to keep an eye on it...but as long as it is back online and stable, I'll sort out the McAfee problems on my end.

Thank you very much for your time and effort!! The instructions were very clear and concise, easy to follow and reasonably quick. I think the only thing I would suggest is a bit of explanatory text regarding the results of each step, something like: "ok, that scan doesn't show any malware" or something like that. Yeah, it's a bit of textual "hand-holding"...but I was left thinking at every step: "I wonder what that did?".

If I have further problems, I'll be back. Otherwise, SLATFATF!

Greetings trapdoor2,

Please be patient my friend. We were cleaning up some loose ends that may or may not have been caused by malware in order to try and get you connected to the internet. We still have not determined if it was McAfee's or malware or both.

Please run the following on-line scan program to see if there might be some thing that is hidden.

ESET online scannner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
  • First please Disable any Antivirus you have active, as shown in This topic.
  • Note: Don't forget to re-enable it after the scan.
  • Next hold down Control then click on the following link to open a new window to ESET online scannner
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on Start.
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on Start.
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on Finish.
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

If it comes back with no results we should be able to do clean up.

Ah...I thought we were done. No problem.

I ran the program and it found 1 problem...but I screwed up and didn't create a log file. 3hrs to scan...I'll have to do it again later (and remember to do the logfile thing).

I'll post the results tomorrow.

Here's the result from the scan:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell DataSafe Local Backup\Components\DSUpdate\hstart.exe a variant of Win32/HiddenStart.A application

No other issues...still connecting properly to the 'net, no more BSODs.
