Something else to note: The MVI3315.avi file that has the hidden file appeared there without my action! I usually store all movies in a single directory (right now on the desktop in directories indicating the year when created).
The computer has been running O.K.; no slowness or unsolicited messages from the malware. However, I put it to "sleep" last night and when I woke it up this morning, the hard drive continues to click away.
I will start the ESET step in your previous message.

A right-click on the McAfee shield (McAfee Security Center) in the tray at bottom right does not show an "exit" option. How do I do this?

I'm also a little confused about the ESET scan instructions.
Your previous message was:
----------------
ESET Online Scanner:
Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your Macafee Anti-Virus.

Disable Antivirus

Right click on the McAfee icon in the system tray and select Exit.

Vista/Windows 7 users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

Please go here to run the scan.

Quote:
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on:
---------------------
There is no "go here to run the scan" for location of ESET.

Hi reallyfreespirit,

My apologies, those instructions were for a different version. See the link below for details on disabling Mcafee Security Centre.

If you click on the word here in the above sentence it should take you to http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/run
Let me know if it does not, as it works for me.

Right or double-clicking on the McAfee shield in the system tray brings up a screen with checkmarks and status of four titles, "Real-Time Scanning", "Updates", "Firewall" and "Subscription". Below that, there are five Features (that allow turning off/on) for "Virus and Spyware Protection", "Web and Email Protection", "Data Protection", "PC and Network Tools" and "Parental Controls". Starting from the Start button, All Programs and selecting "McAfee" expands to show the same screen. No screen with tabs.

Hi reallyfreespirit,

Looking good so far. Eset only identified two threats. The other two can be ignored.

I've included a disk check of the hard drive to see if we can account for the "chattering".

Run OTL Script
We need to run an OTL Fix
  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
  • Copy and Paste the following code into the Image textbox. Do not include the word Code
    Code: Select all
    :files
    C:\Users\Bob\AppData\Local\Temp\BabylonToolbar\BabylonToolbar\1.5.3.17\BabylonToolbar4ie.exe
    C:\Users\Bob\Downloads\WinZip-Registry-Optimizer.exe
    :commands
    [EMPTYTEMP]
    [createrestorepoint]
    [REBOOT]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
  • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.

Check Hard Disk For Errors
Open an Elevated Command Prompt

You will be switching between command prompt and browser windows.

  1. Press the Image button
  2. In the Start Menu search box area type:
    cmd
  3. Right click on cmd.exe (at top of the menu)... click on Run As Administrator.
A black screen will open. You should see the elevated command prompt open to C:\Windows\System32
    Leave it open...
  4. Go back to your browser.

    On the Browser screen
  5. Copy the following command line (including the quotes):
    chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
  6. Go back to the open (black screen) command prompt.

    At the Command Prompt window.
  7. Right click on the window title "Administrator Command Prompt" area. A menu will appear.
  8. Select Edit... then choose Paste. You should see the chkdsk command string you copied, in the black window.
  9. Press Enter ... Chkdsk will now start checking your hard drive. DO NOT CLOSE the Command Prompt window!
The Chkdsk process can take a while, depending on the size of your hard drive.
A file named checkhd.txt will appear on your desktop while Chkdsk is running.
  10. When your hard drive light stop flashing constantly... Open the checkhd.txt file.
You should see totals of bytes on the drive, bytes in files...etc. If you do not see these totals, Chkdsk is still running, close the file, wait a little longer.
  11. Please post the contents of the checkhd.txt file, in your next reply.
Note: If you are in a administrator account and get a log in prompt after doing any of the above steps, then click on the Cancel button and repeat the above process again. This will only happen the very first time you try to open a elevated command prompt in Windows 7.

Hi reallyfreespirit,

The checkdsk scan did not show any errors on the disk. The chattering may just be disk activity. You have a lot of programs set to run at startup that will be constantly accessing the hard disk. Some of these can be disabled, which should improve system performance and reduce disk activity. I would also recommend defragging the hard disk when this topic is closed.

If you want to remove unnecessary programs from startup then please run a new OTL scan using instructions below. If not, I will provide you with cleanup instructions once I get your reply.

OTL Scan
  • Double click on the OTL icon on your desktop. Make sure all other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open OTL.Txt, post the contents of this in your next reply.

Ran OTL. Reboot was a mixed bag. WIndows Installer tried to re-install Ade Acrobat 9. I cancelled this multiple times and finally got a message that an add-on had a serious error (didn't note the name) and I should try to download an update. Didn't do that.
Saved the OTL log and contents are below. I'm wondering what on my desktop may not run or may need attention. Thoughts?
OTL Logfile:

Hi reallyfreespirit,

The only thing removed from your computer was the realplayer toolbar for firefox and IE.

The other removals only prevent programs from starting up when the computer starts. You should still be able to launch them when and as needed.

Continue to use the computer and report back to me in the next two days with any errors you receive.
