Try to do this entire sequence in one session if you can.
Don't do any unnecessary Internet surfing between the AVG removal and the Avast installation.

When you click the Download button, You will get sent to a C-NET site having another Download button. Click it.
The download file is named

Start, Settings, Control Panel or
Start, Control Panel, click
Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight this Entry, and choose
Remove :
AVG 2012
Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.

avg_remover_stf_x86_2011_1322.exe on your Desktop to run it.
----------------------------------------------------------- REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine Again-----------------------------------------------------------Install AvastDouble Click the Avast Installer named
avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe on your Desktop to run it.
Let it Install, Update itself and run a full scan.
Let it remove anything it finds.
Now you can delete both the AVG Remover and the Avast Installer from your desktop.
You should be good to go.
