Help please. Not sure how to pay for this service. I would like to. My computer is plagued with "appearing ads." When "properties" is clicked, the url is one of many, e.g., trafficadmin.net, ad.yieldmanager, ad.oinadserver, content.yieldmanager, and maybe others.

Up until a week or so ago, this computer was fine. I have invested in Adaware, Spysweeper, Ewido, and downloaded many free items like the MS program, HJT, et al.

I have also invested at least 20 hours on this and I am now at my wits end. I need the help of experts.

So with that I throw myself on the mercies of your august group. I await your help.

Happy holidays and happy new year to you.

Thank you in advance.

Please download HijackThis version 1.99.1 from HERE and make sure to unzip and to it's own, permanent folder. To run HijackThis click Do a System Scan and Save log file, Post the resulting log in a reply to this thread. Use PostReply button at top of first message. I would be happy to take a look at it.

THANK YOU so very much. Just getting started is a catharsis

Unread postby btdbfpt » December 25th, 2005, 6:53 pm

THANK YOU so very much. Just getting started is a catharsis. Here is the log from HJT. I would say that with no browswers up, no OUTLOOK running, the system did not produce any ads. The system was connected on line for three hours. The trouble starts, it seems, when IE is running, AIM is running, and OUTLOOK is on.

First of all, you will need to print out this post and/or save a copy as a text file in Notepad; that way you have a hard copy of these instructions; you can not have IE/Firefox/any browser open during the fix.

Please temporarily disable MSAS by doing the following:
It may interfere with the fix.

  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Options -> Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware

Make sure the settings are changed back when we are done.

Click HERE to download Atri's ATF Cleaner (AllTempFile)..Download to your desktop
More info on this tool HERE

I see you have Ewido Installed..Please make sure you definition are updated by doing the following
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files:
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Close Ewido Security Suite
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Next, please enable viewing of hidden files as follows:
1) Go to My Computer, and click on the "Tools" menu
2) Click "Folder options"
3) Select the "View" tab
4) Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected
5) Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
6) Make sure "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" is unchecked

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries:

  • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Mpgoslja] C:\WINNT\System32\??mbols\mmc.exe

You may also optionally check the following entries for removal:
All of the following are UN-needed to run at startup. They can be ran as needed; saving system resources for better uses.

  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dell QuickSet] C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\quickset.exe
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdaptecDirectCD] "C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe"
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINNT\System32\igfxtray.exe
  • O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present <<---- Remove UNLESS set by you.

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Go to the Start Menu, and click on "Control Panel". Choose "Add/Remove Programs" and remove any of the following that are listed:

Next, delete the following folders (if they exist):

C:\WINNT\System32\??mbols\mmc.exe <---- I can't give you the name of the folder any closer thatn that...But when you go there with Windows Explorer (My Computer and browser to that location); the ?? will be replaced by letters. It MAY even be named symbols..Just make sure that mmc.exe is in the folder and delete the WHOLE folder.

Run the ATFcleaner you downloaded earlier>check Select All>Click Empty Selected>OK>Close it

Start Ewido Security Suite
  • Click on scanner. (Note: Do not start any programs or open any windows while Ewido is scanning)
  • Click on Complete System Scan, the scan will now begin.
  • While the scan is in progress you will be promted to clean files, click OK.
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections", then choose clean and click OK.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located at the bottom of the screen named Save Report.
  • Click Save Report.
  • Now save the report .txt file to your desktop.
  • Close Ewido Security Suite

Restart your computer and rerun HijackThis. Please post a new HijackThis log and the log from Ewido in a reply to this thread.

Thanks... working now

Unread postby btdbfpt » December 26th, 2005, 6:00 am

Thanks, working on it now... Back when I've finished.

By the way, do you know how this infection could have begun? Perhaps a premature question. I am usually very circumspect about any downloads, but obviously missed this one. Also, because of the intractability of this one, and the fact that no SW could remove it, is it new? As I write this, I have yet another "appearing ad."

Thanks again, especially for working with me during the holidays.

Are you still getting popups?? From any particular site/location?? You log and Ewido are clean but if you are still getting popups we can dig a little deeper.

Is you bersion of WeatherBug new or fairly old?? Older versions were bundled with Adware.

Good news; I think!

jwbirdsong ,

No "appearing ads" all day yesterday at all. I will be on the computer all day today. I would like to declare victory; however, I am reluctant only because of the insidious nature of these ads - - they really don't pop up, they just appear. Regarding your questions, not sure how to check WB, but it's been on the computer for a very long time, much longer than when these ads appeared. So it is old. Should I remove and reinstall?

What you had me remove, may I ask what that was and how I "caught" it?

I also want to thank you again for doing what you've done and your willingness to continue. I hope that this is indeed the end of the ads. How long does one go "ad-less" before one can really declare "I am clean?"

It can't hurt..but it is your choice..I'd say you are probably OK; given the fact you've had it and not problems for some time.

may I ask what that was and how I "caught" it?

That's one of those thing that; after the fact; is almost impossible to say.

How long does one go "ad-less" before one can really declare "I am clean?"

usually a few hours will tell; but that can very also. I'll post my "Cleaned up computer speech which may give you a little more insight and some tips for prevention. Especially the last link/speech listed ie. How did I get infected in the first place.

Congratulations, your log is clean.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.

    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
    * CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
    1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    2. Restart your computer.

    3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard and IE/Spyad.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It is free.

Make SURE to read and follow the guidance in How Did I Get Infected in the First Place??

I'll wait a good 24-36 hours before i have this post closed out so if you have an more questions/comments/problems feels free to post away.

Well, I have done everything and I thank you so very much. I also made good on my support pledge.

It has been many hours, >10, of "appearing ad - free" computing. So it sounds like you have succeded!

I am going to wipe out my backup drive and start with a clean backup to ensure whatever did this is not still around.

Happy New Year and if anything changes I will let you know. Thanks again!!

This inadvertently got left off of my speech

I highly recommend installing SP2. Click here: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.
-or-
It's a very large download, so if you're on dial-up, order a free CD here:

PS and THANKS for the contribution
