Videos and sound are not playing properly on my laptop

Unread postby begona » March 31st, 2012, 7:45 am

Hi there

This week my laptop was working extremely slowly and kept crashing. I carried out a good clean up of the laptop including deleting unused programs and processes (i.e. my external hard drive was trying to save everything from my laptop every time I plugged it in so I deleted the software that came with the hard drive). I also followed the instructions on your website to clean up my laptop and did everything you guys suggest.

Now the laptop is working better so at least I can use the internet and open Microsoft applications like Word but when I try to play videos they don't work properly. The image of the videos is ok although they take a very long time to open but the sound seems broken and the videos play very slowly. Also all sound coming from the laptop sounds weird (metalic) and broken. The laptop takes a very long time to start although I run Startuplite as suggested in your website. Thus I run out of ideas :)

Can you please help? These are my 2 logs as follows:

Hi and welcome to Malware Removal Forum.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.
This may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
If you no longer require help i would be grateful if you would let me know.

Before we start please note the following important guidelines.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process.
  • Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • Note: No Reply Within 3 Days Will Result In Your Topic Being Closed!

Note: If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.
Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start

Remove P2P Programs

  • I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.
    µTorrent
  • Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.
  • Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

  • Click on start
  • Then Run
  • In the open text entry box please copy/paste appwiz.cpl Then click enter.
  • Press the "Remove" or "Change/Remove"...button to uninstall the programs listed above (in red) and any other P2P you have installed NOW.
  • Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

While you are in Add/remove programs uninstall the following also, we will replace them later with updated versions.
Adobe Reader 9.5.0
Java(TM) 6 Update 20

May i ask by what means you obtained this software?

Hi Cypher

First of all, thank you very much for dealing with my query, I really appreciate your help.

Secondly, I have removed the 3 programs you asked from my computer (uTorrent, Adobe Reader and Java).

Lastly, regarding your question about my Microsoft Windows version, I got it from an IT repairs shop. A couple of years ago my laptop wouldn't start at all so I took it to an IT repairs shop where I live to try and recuperate some of my data, especially pictures as I had years of them stored in my laptop which I hadn't backed up at the time (I have now though), and the guys in the shop said they had to installed a new version of Windows from scratch so that's how I got it.

Thanks again for your help.
I look forward to hearing from you again soon.

Unauthorized version of Windows Operating System
The copy of Windows XP installed on the computer does not have a valid license.
As the version of Windows is not a valid, supported version, we will not assist you in cleaning your machine. Unauthorized or BETA versions of operating systems are known to have problems and instabilities. By attempting to clean a machine with this type of operating system, there is no telling what the end results would be. The tools we use have been tested on supported versions of Windows and could cause more problems than you are currently experiencing.

If you have reason to believe that your copy of Windows should have passed the validation process, you may contact Microsoft for assistance:
