I downloaded Foxfire, and it seems to work much better than internet explorer! No issues downloading! As for my office programs, I downloaded AppPaths, but there isn't a folder for office in my programs and works isn't listed on the AppPaths list. I can see it in my program list to uninstall/change, but nowhere else.

Well McAfee does not seem to be present on your System, other than a few remnants, so we'd better remove them as well ....

  • Double click OTL.exe to launch the programme.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the code box below into the Custom Scans/Fixes box.
Code: Select all
:Files
C:\Users\Kennedy\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Virtualized\C\ProgramData\McAfee
C:\Users\Sue\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Virtualized\C\ProgramData\McAfee

  • Click the Run Fix button.
  • OTL will now process the instructions.
  • When finished a box will open asking you to open the fix log, click OK.
  • The fix log will open.
  • Copy/Paste the log in your next reply please.

Note: If necessary, OTL may re-boot your computer, or request that you do so, if it does, re-boot your computer. A log will be produced upon re-boot.

I'd like you to check some files for Viruses.

C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MpSvc.dll

  • Browse to the first file in the quote box above.
  • Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Note details of any viruses found.
  • Repeat for all files on the list, and post me the details please.

Next

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
Code: Select all
:Folderfind
office

:Filefind
office

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Summary of the logs I need from you in your next post:
  • Results from VirusTotal or Jotti's
  • Latest SystemLook.txt

Please post each log separately to prevent it being cut off by the forum post size limiter. Check each after you've posted it to make sure it's all present, if any log is cut off you'll have to post it in sections.

Since Firefox appears to be working OK, it would appear that the problem with Internet Explorer is with the browser itself and not with your underlying system, in which case if you wish to keep using Internet Explorer as your default browser, then I suggest you uninstall your current copy of Internet Explorer, and download and install a new copy.

Re: My start menu is empty, not able to download anything

It would seem that Microsoft Office is not present on your computer.

If it was I'd have expected to find a folder .... C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office .... on your computer, and this appears to be missing.

Also given that both your Windows Defender files seem to be clean, the problem with that would seem to be permission based, and finding and resolving that could take a while.

Given your accumulation of problems, and the indeterminate nature of just exactly what has caused all this damage, I think the most pragmatic solution is to back up your personal files and folders to an external medium, then re-format your hard drive, and re-install Windows.

We could take a great deal of time fishing for answers as to just what is damaged on your computer, and then probably miss something that causes problems later, leaving you with a less than fully functional machine, whereas a re-format would only take a matter of hours, and would leave you with a clean and fully functioning computer.

If this were my machine, I would not hesitate to re-format, and it would be remiss of me to have you continue running scans and checks, when there is no definite chance that we can "patch things up."

I'm sorry it has come to this, but I really do believe that a re-format is your best, quickest, and safest option to a clean and functional machine.

I would have to agree with your suggestion. I only wish I knew what it was that caused the problem initially. I am going to go ahead an re-format the computer today. I am greatly appreciative of all the time/help given by you and your team! Thanks so much! I'll be sure to share this site with anyone I know in need of help, and I'll be checking back myself (hopefully just for routine info/guidance)!

Thanks! Sue

Sorry we couldn't have done more to help, but sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets you.

I think you've taken the right decision to reformat.

Good luck, look forward to seeing you again in more favourable circumstances.
