Slow performance and Browser BSOD

Unread postby derkai » February 16th, 2012, 5:52 pm

I've been having peformance issues with my system and using google chrome results in the browser hanging on finding websites and BSOD of I try to access options. Firefox also lags a lot and pauses on a lot of websites. In general, applications hang for a while when I try to access random programs or load up youtube/flash pages. When I'm playing games, I get frequent long pauses and hangs during gameplay. When things aren't pausing or lagging, the games themselves run at relatively high FPS. I scanned my hdds for errors multiple times and found nothing. Re-installed drivers and tested different video cards, ram, cpu. I scanned my system with Avast and Malwarebytes. It's looking like a software issue and I'm hoping I can find the help I need here.

Hi derkai,
I recognize that you are a fairly experienced PC user. For that reason, I am giving you quite a bit to do in the first post.
However, In order to bring about the best results here, please do not Install or Uninstall anything, run any scans or fix anything, unless I ask, until we are through.

We do need to remove the P2P programs, the added Antivirus, and the outdated Java first.
-----------------------------------------------
Please Note Our Policy on the Use of P2P (Person to Person / Peer to Peer) file sharing programs
It is posted here: http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=491394#p491394
As a condition of receiving our help, I have included the P2P programs utorrent and Ares in the removal instructions below, so we are not wasting our time.
If you have used these, and your computer is infected, you can be fairly confident this is a principal reason.

It's really important, if you value your PC at all, to stay away from P2P file sharing programs, like utorrent, Ares, Bittorrent, Azureus, Frostwire, Vuze, Shareaza, Bitlord.
Criminals have "planted" thousands upon thousands of infections in the "free" shared files.
Virtually all of these recent infections will compromise your Security, and some can turn your machine into a useless "doorstop".
------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Control Panel, click on Uninstall a program under the Programs heading.
Right click each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, choose Uninstall/Change, and give permission to Continue:

µTorrent
Ares 2.1.6
avast! Free Antivirus
Java(TM) 6 Update 20

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
----------------------------------------------
Download and Run Temp File Cleaner (TFC.exe)
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
You might want to Save any unsaved work first. TFC will close ALL open programs... including your browser!
Right click TFC and choose Run as Administrator
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, it will report the total size of files removed. If it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
-----------------------------------------
Check hard Drive for Errors
Open Notepad... then copy and paste the following line into Notepad:
(Notepad is in Start, Programs, Accessories)
Code: Select all
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"

Now Save the NotePad file like this:
  • Click on File from the top menu bar.
  • Select Save As, use Filename: testhd.bat and Save As Type: All Files.
  • Choose Desktop as the location
  • Click Save.
Right click on testhd.bat on your desktop and select Run As Administrator to run it. OK the UAC.
A Command Prompt box will pop up, then close after a couple minutes.
Please post the contents of the checkhd.txt file from your desktop.
If the file is very long, just copy and paste the LAST 20 or 30 lines into your reply.

derkai,
I think your hard disk may have some "holes" in it.
it may mean you will have to offload any critical files to DVDs, etc. and replace the drive.
Let's be sure.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Hard Disk Repair
IF Chkdsk has found any errors having to do with bad sectors in your file system, or if it reports that it cannot continue in Read-Only Mode, it needs to run a different sequence on reboot to do repairs. It can't repair the file system while Windows is running.
DO NOT START THIS SEQUENCE UNLESS YOU CAN DO WITHOUT THE MACHINE FOR AN HOUR OR TWO. It may not take very long , but could, depending on the number of files and folders.
It will not relinquish control until it is done. You cannot stop it, and it would be a BIG mistake to pull the plug.

  1. Open Notepad... then copy and paste the following into Notepad:
    Code: Select all
    cmd /c chkdsk c: /F
  2. Now Save the NotePad file like this:
    • Click on File from the top menu bar.
    • Select Save As, use Filename: fixhd.bat. and Save As Type: All Files.
    • Choose Desktop as the location
    • Click Save.
  3. Right click on fixhd.bat on your desktop and select Run As Administrator to run it.
  4. You will get a message that the volume is locked, with a request to do the repair on Reboot. Answer Y
  5. Click Continue at the UAC prompt.
Go to Start, Turn Off Computer and choose Reboot
It will scan again when it boots up and make the repairs as the first part of the reboot process.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Check Hard Disk For Errors
Once the computer boots up again, please delete your original file Checkhd.txt If it's present on your Desktop.
Right click on testhd.bat on your desktop and select Run As Administrator to run it.
Click Continue at the UAC prompt.
A Command Prompt box will pop up, then close after a couple minutes.
Please post the contents of the new checkhd.txt file from your desktop.
If it's very long just post the last 30-50 lines.

Hi derkai,
This is the critical one:
236 KB in bad sectors.

This means you have some sectors that will not read/write correctly.
You should download all your critical files to CDs, DVDs, or external Harddrives as soon as possible.

Often, after you see this, the drive will quit altogether, without warning, and will refuse to boot.
Fortunately, so far, the bad sectors don't seem to be in the boot area.

Please download everything you can for use after a re-install, and get a replacement drive before it's totally lost.
Retail replacement drives usually include software with instructions to mount both drives and make a complete transfer of files.
Then your only job will be to replace those from the bad sector areas.

Sorry about the bad news.

If I can help in any way, let me know.

I really appreciate the help. I had a feeling that my drive was dying on me. I just wanted to be 100% sure and see if an expert like you could find something I might have missed. I'm gonna buy a new drive and start from scratch. Thanks again for your help.

Since this issue is being resolved by a hardware replacement, this topic will be closed.
Glad we could be of some help.
