Unread postby AC2012 » February 13th, 2012, 9:55 pm

Hello AC2012 ,

Welcome to the Malware Removal Forum. My name is Troy and I will be assisting you with the malware issues on your computer.
Because I am still in training, all the advice I give must first be checked by an instructor, therefore there may be some delays in my replies.

A few things before we get started
  1. If you have not already done so Please read these forum rules.
  2. Please be aware that removing malware is not without risk and while unrecoverable damage to systems is rare, it can happen and require a re-format and re-install of your operating system. Because of this it is a good idea to back-up anything important saved on your computer.
  3. Any fixes I may post will be specific to your computer and should not be used on other computers.
  4. While we work on your computer please don't install any new programs, try any other fixes, or run any tools other than those requested.
  5. If at any time my instructions are not clear please ask before proceeding.
  6. Failure to respond within 3 days will result in this topic being closed - If you need more time to complete the steps required, please let me know.

I am now analysing your logs and will reply when I have further instructions.

Hi AC2012,

Thanks in advance for your help.
You're welcome.

First a couple of questions
  1. What is this computer used for?
  2. How did you acquire Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007

Step 1
MGADiag.exe
  • Please download MGA Diagnostic Tool and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on MGADiag.exe to run it.
  • Click Continue.
  • The program will run. It takes a while to finish the diagnosis, please be patient.
  • Once done, click on Copy.
  • Open Notepad and paste the contents in the window.
  • Save this file and copy/paste it in your next reply.

1. My computer is for personal use. Surfing the web, watching online videos, listening to music via itunes. I also use the microsoft office programs such as excel & word.

2. I acquired the microsoft office suite from a friend who has access to the products through his job. I'm not sure if that answers your question. I'm not sure what enterprise 2007 is.

3. The laptop has recently started restarting on its own. A few times a blue screen pops up saying that it is shutting down to prevent an attack.

Hi AC2012,

Your logs clearly indicate that your copy of Microsoft Office is pirated.

Per forum policy to continue receiving help you must remove it, otherwise we must close this topic.

If you choose to proceed, please follow the steps below.

Step 1
Add/Remove programs
  • Click on start
  • In the search box please copy/paste appwiz.cpl Then click on appwiz.cpl.
  • Select the following from the list and click the uninstall button.
Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007

Step 2
Scan with DDS
  1. Please download DDS ... by sUBs. Save it to your desktop. Alternate download links here or here.
  2. Disable any script blocking software you have running before running DDS.
  3. Double click dds.com to run the tool. (File name will be different if alternate download used).
A black window will open with some instructions/comments...
  4. When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
Caution: The above logs will NOT be saved... you must save them to your desktop.
  5. Please post both logs in your next reply.

Please let me know how you would like to proceed.

Hi AC2012,

Step 1
Please download aswMBR and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right click aswMBR.exe & choose "Run as Administrator" to run it.
  • Click Yes to the prompt to download Avast! virus definitions.
(Please be patient whilst the virus definitions download)
  • With the AVscan set to Quick Scan, click the Scan button.
(Please be patient whilst your computer is scanned.)
  • After a while when the scan reports "Scan finished successfully", click Save log & save the log to your desktop.
  • Click OK > Exit.
  • Note: Do not attempt to fix anything at this stage!
  • Two files will be created, aswMBR.txt & a file named MBR.dat.
  • MBR.dat is a backup of the MBR(master boot record), do not delete it..
  • I strongly suggest you keep a copy of this backup stored on an external device.
  • Copy & Paste the contents of aswMBR.txt into your next reply.

Step 2
TDSSKiller
Please download the TDSSKiller.exe by Kaspersky... save it to your Desktop. Note: It is VERY IMPORTANT to run this from your desktop.
  1. Right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select "run as administrator" and allow it to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
If TDSSKiller does not run... rename it. Right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. abc123.com).
  2. Click the Start Scan button. Do not use the computer during the scan!
  3. If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  4. If any suspicious or malicious objects are detected ensure Skip is selected then click Continue. Do not attempt to fix anything yet!
  5. A log file named TDSSKiller_version_dd.mm.yyyy_hh.mm.ss_log.txt will be created and saved to the root directory. (usually Local Disk C:).
  6. Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

Please include in your next reply
  • TDSSKiller log
  • aswMBR.txt

Will all that you are doing take care of the google/malware issue as well as my computers start up issues? It frequently reboots on its own and runs "start up repair" saying "windows did not shut down properly"

Hi AC2012,

Rootkit!
I have reviewed your log and found your computer has been infected with a Rootkit along with several other infections.
A rootkit is a set of software tools intended for concealing running processes, files or system data from the operating system. This allows the attacker to make changes to your system so that they can use it for malicious purposes without your knowledge. They can collect and transmit personal information including usernames, passwords, and personally identifiable information.

You are strongly advised to do the following:
  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft, put a watch on your accounts, and change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords
(ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, any online activity you perform, requiring a username and password).
Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.

Because your computer is infected with a rootkit it is impossible to know all the changes that may have been made to your system. The best course of action would be to re-format and re-install your operating system.
If you would like to try and clean your system I will help, but I would advise against it. In the end, the clean-up procees is likely to take as long or longer than a re-format and re-install, and because we cannot know what changes were made, the computer can never be trusted again untill it has been re-formatted.

Please see the following articles for more information.
When should I re-format and reinstall my OS
What are Remote Access Trojans and why are they dangerous?

Please let me know how you would like to proceed.

I have gone ahead and changed all of my passwords and account information. I would like to proceed with the re-format & re-install. Can my computer be trusted if this process is successful? How did these malware get on my machine in the first place? Any guesses? I have an external hard drive. My main concern is making sure I preserve my itunes library. Can you assist with this as well?

Hi AC2012 ,

I think you have made the best decision.
Can my computer be trusted if this process is successful?
Yes a reformat will completely erase the hard drive. As long as you only back up data (music, picture, videos, documents...etc.) your computer will be completely clean. Any programs should be reinstalled from their original install media.

I have an external hard drive. My main concern is making sure I preserve my itunes library. Can you assist with this as well?
Please see this Article on using HP Recovery. Make sure you select Factory Reset so the entire hard drive is formatted. The infection on your computer affected the MBR so just formatting the system drive may not be enough.

The following articles by Apple describe how to backup and restore your itunes library
Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
How to move your music to a new computer

We specialise in malware removal in this forum. If you need assistance with reformatting and reinstalling your OS I suggest you start a topic in the General Computer Support Forum or post at What the Tech. There are great people over there who will be happy to help you.

It is almost impossibe to determine exactly how you were infected, but here is a guide I highly reccomend COMPUTER SECURITY - a short guide to staying safer online. It can help you avoid becomming infected again.

Factory reset wasn't an option. I chose system restore. Is that the same?

Hi AC2012,

Factory reset wasn't an option. I chose system restore. Is that the same?

No, "System Restore" and "System Recovery" are two completely different processes.
Simply running a System Restore will not remove the infection.

Step 1
To effectively remove the infection you need to "Restore the PC to its original condition with the HP Recovery Manager" Please follow These Steps.

Step 2
Please download aswMBR and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click aswMBR.exe to run it.
  • Click NO to the prompt to download Avast! virus definitions.
  • Click the Scan button.
