Hello enofziger,

Welcome to the Malware Removal Forum. My name is Troy and I will be assisting you with the malware issues on your computer.
Because I am still in training, all the advice I give must first be checked by an instructor, therefore there may be some delays in my replies.

A few things before we get started
  1. If you have not already done so Please read these forum rules.
  2. Please be aware that removing malware is not without risk and while unrecoverable damage to systems is rare, it can happen and require a re-format and re-install of your operating system. Because of this it is a good idea to back-up anything important saved on your computer.
  3. Any fixes I may post will be specific to your computer and should not be used on other computers.
  4. While we work on your computer please don't install any new programs, try any other fixes, or run any tools other than those requested.
  5. If at any time my instructions are not clear please ask before proceeding.
  6. Failure to respond within 3 days will result in this topic being closed - If you need more time to complete the steps required, please let me know.

HijackThis was not designed for 64-bit systems.

Step 1
Scan with DDS
  1. Please download DDS ... by sUBs. Save it to your desktop. Alternate download links here or here.
  2. Disable any script blocking software you have running before running DDS.
  3. Double click dds.com to run the tool. (File name will be different if alternate download used).
A black window will open with some instructions/comments...
  4. When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
Caution: The above logs will NOT be saved... you must save them to your desktop.
  5. Please post both logs in your next reply.

Hi enofziger,

Step 1
Upload File/Files for testing

Please go to Virustotal or jotti.org

  • Click the browse button then navigate to the following file:
    C:\Users\Ellie\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\AppleUpdate\Appleupdt32.exe
  • Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.

Hi enofziger,

Let's try it again after changing the setting on your computer to show hidden files.

Step 1
Set Your Computer to Show All Files/Folders.

  • Click Start.
  • Click Computer.
  • Click on the Organize tab and click Folder and search options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended).
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK.

Step 2

Troy,

I had already had hidden files shown. I did "Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended)." as well, but still don't see that file (or any files) in that folder.

Troy,

When I attempt to run ComboFix, it tells me that Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security is active, and I need to disable it before continuing.

I attempted to reinstall TM shortly before I first posted this thread in the forum, and although my TM is no longer active, it didn't fully uninstall. It is partially uninstalled, so I cannot use the TM diagnostic toolkit to complete the uninstall. Should I run the hot fix they recommend in order to complete the uninstall?

If so, shou

Hi enofziger,

It's possible that the infection on you system may be interfering with a clean install of your AntiVirus software.

Step 1
  • Please run the hotfix to uninstall Trend Micro Maximum Security.
  • Then run ComboFix with no AV installed.

Step 2
Temporary Anti-Virus!
Untill we get your computer clean, Please install one of the following programs.

Installing new Anti-Virus Software
  1. Download the new Anti-virus product to your computer desktop.
  2. Save any work. Close all applications, especially your Internet connection.
  3. Reboot your computer.
  4. Install the new AV product... following installation instructions.
  5. Check for updates to the new AV product, if not done during install setup.
  6. Run a full scan of your computer.

After we get your computer clean you can reinstall Trend Micro Maximum Security or stay with whichever program you decide to use.

Please include in your next reply
  • ComboFix.txt
  • How is your computer behaving now?

Troy,

I ran the hotfix to uninstall Trend Micro, but when I run ComboFix, I still get the message that ComboFix has detected Trend Micro to be active. :(

Troy,

All right, ran ComboFix (see attached).
Installed MS SE.
Full scan took most of the day yesterday and found 4 issues (trojan). Removed those. Computer seems to be acting normally.

Plan to continue to use MS SE; any other recommendations?
