firefox address bar redirected to quizstope.com (& others)

Unread postby electroshocked » February 9th, 2012, 8:05 am

not sure what exactly caused this. it is on the girlfriends computer, and she had some crappy toolbars and other shit installed that i removed over a month ago. our landlord also had her email hacked and an email was sent to my girlfriend with a link that directed her to a viagra ad. i got mad when she told me what happened because i told her, never open urls or attachments even from trusted addresses (especially if they dont come with accompanying text or seem unusual---bet best case scenario is NEVER DO IT, i told her). anyway... it could be that the two ARE related, it could not.

anyway, so far all i've found is that in firefox the address bar redirects, on occasion, if you type in a url or something close (there's a lot of QUIZ sites, some were ED/SEX/PORN related it seemed, but most were quiz). this doesn't happen in the search bar, or with clicked links, nor does it redirect google searches or anything like that. i've told her to stay out of important websites, or any where she would use a password and i have her no longer using firefox for the time being. i've been using opera myself for a while, but i recently just did an overall switch to it and i maybe suggested to do the same with her, or at least demanding she use NoScript if she does continue to use firefox because i paid for the machine and its only 6 months old. (right now she is using chrome with no problems i'm aware of).

earlier i was thinking it may have been similar to the google redirect, so i tried combofix suggested for that, but it didn't seem to do anything for the problem (probably because couldn't disable my isp provided AV completely, its Norton Security Suite). i realize i should have came here and that this was a mistake, sorry.

anyway here are the logs. i appreciate any help you can provide and will follow your guide to the letter. also, i had spybot installed but i removed it before running the DDS.scr.

Hello electroshocked,

Welcome to the forum! :)

My name is pgmigg and I'll be helping you with any malware problems.

Currently I am working under the guidance of the MRU teachers and everything I post to you, must first be approved by them.
This additional review process can add some extra time to my responses, but I will post back with instructions for you as soon as possible.

Before we begin, please read and follow these important guidelines, so things will proceed smoothly.
  1. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  2. You must have Administrator rights, permissions for this computer.
  3. DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  4. DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  5. Only post your problem at (1) one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  6. Print each set of instructions if possible - your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  7. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  8. Only reply to this thread, do not start another one. Please, continue responding, until I give you the "All Clean!"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

I am currently reviewing your log and will return, as soon as possible, with additional instructions. In the meantime...
Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.

Please read all instructions carefully before executing and perform the steps, in the order given.
lf you have any questions or problems executing these instructions, <<STOP>> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Hello electroshocked,

Thank you for your patience... :)

P2P Advisory!
IMPORTANT: There are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs installed on your computer:

µTorrent

As long as you have the P2P program(s) installed, per Forum Policy, I can offer you no further assistance.
If you choose NOT to remove the program(s), please indicate that in your next reply and this topic will be closed.

Otherwise, please perform the following steps:

For safety reason (to have a good registry to restore if needed), I will ask you to create a System Restore Point (SRP) before most of my instructions sets...

Step 0.
Create a System Restore Point
  1. Right-click on Computer and select Properties.
  2. In the left pane under Tasks please click System protection.
If UAC prompts for an administrator password or approval, type the password or give your "permission to continue".
  3. Select System Protection, then choose Create.
  4. In the System Restore dialog box, type a description for the restore point and then click Create again.
A window will pop up with "The Restore Point was created successfully" confirmation message.
  5. Click OK, then close the System Restore dialog.

If you have successfully created a System Restore Point... we can proceed.
If you have NOT successfully created a System Restore Point... do not go any further!
Please post back so we can determine why it was unsuccessful.

Step 1.
Remove Program(s)

Looking to your logs I found existence of intrusive keylogger Constant Guard Protection Suite which is buggy and may interfere with fixing your machine. It should be removed together with his companion application GuardedID.
Note: The removing GuardedID will lose any saved passwords, so please write them down first!.

  1. Click on Start, then click the Start Search box on the Start Menu.
  2. Copy and paste the value below without the word Code: into the open text entry box:
    Code: Select all
     appwiz.cpl
and press Enter - the Unistall or change a program list will be opened.
  3. Click each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, choose Uninstall, and give permission to Continue:
    µTorrent
    Constant Guard Protection Suite
    GuardedID
  4. Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
  5. When the program(s) have been uninstalled, please close Control Panel.

Step 2.
OTL - Download
Please download OTL.exe by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

OTL Scan
Important! Close all applications and windows so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop.
  1. Right click on OTL.exe select "Run As Administrator..." to run it. If prompted by UAC, please allow it.
  2. Under Output, ensure that Standard Output is selected.
  3. Check the box at the top, labeled Include 64-bit scans
  4. Check the boxes labeled :
    • Scan All Users
    • LOP check
    • Purity check
    • Extra Registry > Use SafeList
  5. Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  6. When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened, maximized
    • Extras.txt <-- Will be minimized on task bar.
  7. Please post the contents of both OTL.txt and Extras.txt files in your next reply.

Please include in your next reply:
  1. Do you have any problems executing the instructions?
  2. Contents of a OTL.txt log file
  3. Contents of a Extras.txt log file
  4. Do you see any changes in computer behavior?

Thanks,
pgmigg

Re: firefox address bar redirected to quizstope.com (& other

Unread postby electroshocked » February 10th, 2012, 7:33 pm

hey hey hey. i appreciate all your help. and while i would like to remind you (which you probably already know), there are legitimate uses for bittorrent, such as downloading of linux related software/apps, and other such things. despite this, and rather than refuse your help, i went ahead and uninstalled per your instructions (also due to my earlier pledge to follow your steps to the letter).

one thing before i post the logs, when i uninstalled the Constant Guard Protection Suite, it asked me to reboot, which i did. afterwords, i went to look for GuardedID to remove it, but it was already gone from the application list (appwiz.cpl). So.. I am assuming it was vaporized along with the suite as i couldn't find a trace of it.

the good news is that the address bar redirect appears to be gone. YAY. i don't know if thats premature, but you didn't seem to worried and from the tone of your response i assumed this would be basically all i needed. anyway, if whatever the culprit was is gone, could you tell me what it was and the most likely avenue the intrusion came into the gf's system by? would appreciate it! thanks.

here's the logs

Hello electroshocked,

Great job and great news! :)
But we are not finished yet. Let continue our treatment...

Step 1.
Remove Program(s)
    Java Auto Updater
    Java 6 Update 24
    Java 6 Update 29
  4. Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
  5. When the program(s) have been uninstalled, please close Control Panel.

Step 2.
OTL - Run Fix Script
You should still have OTL on your desktop.
Important! Close all applications and windows so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop.
  1. Right click on OTL.exe select "Run As Administrator..." to run it. If prompted by UAC, please allow it.
  2. Copy and Paste the following code into the Image
text box. Do not include the word Code
    Code: Select all
    :OTL

just a few things...

A. did not find a java auto updater.
B. there was no Add-On/Active X install portion in the ESET install

and thats it, if i remember correctly. unfortunately 9 threats found with ESET... which is upsetting. I know one of them was a thing I removed/tried to removed months back after the girlfriend installed some crap in toolbars and programs (yontoo/tarma installer). as far as the dell data safe backup thing, i'm surprised to see this... as this was something installed in with DELL device drivers and programs when the computer was ordered--I checked the date myself. and funny thing is, never seen or know of the program being used it in the past really, but I did notice some activity from it lately (i.e. an update or reminder of some sort popped up recently i believe).

anyway, here's the logs.

Hello electroshocked,

Please tell me, do you use Dell Datasafe Backup? If not, I recommend you to uninstall it.

Online Virus Total file scan
  1. Please go to Virus Total to upload the following files one by one for scanning:

    C:\Users\X8300-User_1\Downloads\PageRageSetupAff.exe
    C:\Users\X8300-User_1\Downloads\setup (1).exe
    C:\Users\X8300-User_1\Downloads\winamp562_full_emusic-7plus_all.exe
    C:\Users\X8300-User_1\Music\winamp5581_full_emusic-7plus_en-us.exe

  2. Press the Browse button and navigate to the file in the list.
  3. Double click the located file name... The file name should now appear in the online scanner's text entry box.
  4. Click on Send File...button.
  5. The file will be queued, uploaded and scanned by various antivirus scanners - this may take a few minutes.
If you receive the message: File has already been analysed:
Please press the Reanalyse file now button, so your file will be scanned.
  6. When all scans have completed... the results page is displayed
  7. Please highlight and copy the page web address link from your browser window.
    Example of web address :
    Image
  8. Please repeat steps 2-7 for every file in the list.
  9. Paste the Web address link(s) for the scan results in your next reply.

Please include in your next reply:
  1. Do you have any problems executing the instructions?
  2. The resulting 4 web links after online files scan by Virus Total.

Thanks,

Hello electroshocked,

You did not answer for my question regarding using of Dell Datasafe Backup?
Please do it now.

Step 1.
    Code: Select all
    :Files
    C:\Users\X8300-User_1\Downloads\PageRageSetupAff.exe
    C:\Users\X8300-User_1\Downloads\setup (1).exe
    C:\Users\X8300-User_1\Downloads\winamp562_full_emusic-7plus_all.exe
    C:\Users\X8300-User_1\Music\winamp5581_full_emusic-7plus_en-us.exe

    :Commands
    [EMPTYTEMP]
    [CREATERESTOREPOINT]

  3. Click under the Custom Scan/Fixes box and paste the copied text.
  4. Click the Run Fix button. If prompted... click OK.
  5. OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.

Step 2.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware [MBAM] scan
Please save any items you were working on... close any open programs. You may be asked to reboot your machine.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. If needed...Tutorial w/screenshots
Alternate download sites available here or here.
  1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  2. Right-click on mbam-setup-1.60.1.1000.exe and select "Run as administrator..." to run it. If prompted by UAC, please allow it. Then follow the prompts to install the program.
  3. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  4. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
    • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
    • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • Problems downloading the updates? Manually download them from here and double-click on "mbam-rules.exe" to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  1. Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  2. Then click on the Scan button.
  3. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  4. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  5. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  6. Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  1. Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  2. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
We will take care of the System Volume Information items later.
  3. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  4. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  5. Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Please include in your next reply:
  1. Do you have any problems executing the instructions?
  2. Answer for my question about using of Dell Datasafe Backup.
  3. Contents of C:\_OTL\Moved Files\MMDDYYY_HHMMSS.log file after OTL fix.
  4. Contents of MBAM log file.
  5. Do you see any changes in computer behavior?

Thanks,

EDIT: browsing on FIREFOX and it happened again... D'oh! The address bar on a mistyped url redirected to quizstope.com! Thankfully since Malwarebytes was installed, it caught it and prevented the website from loading (AWESOME!), but sad that this little fucking bug is still around. Insidious little shit!! ARGGGHH!

sorry about that, i must have missed the part about dell backup because it wasnt in the numbered instructions. anyway i did remove it as you asked, which appeared to go without trouble. on reboot a dell backup update screen popped up again so i looked in appwiz.cpl to see that dell backup ONLINE was a different program that needed uninstallation. i did that and it said to continue it needed to close ara, i chose to do so and the update screen was killed and the program removed. i have not seen it pop up since.

i followed the rest of the instructions without incident. here are the logs

Re: firefox address bar redirected to quizstope.com (& other

Unread postby electroshocked » February 18th, 2012, 12:47 am

hey...

that's great news, but perhaps i edited my last post too late because i mentioned that the QUIZSTOPE.COM redirect from the firefox address bar came back! malwarebytes program caught it with realtime protection and didnt load the page, which was fabulous.... but that's just treating the symptom as opposed to the cure. im wondering if perhaps the redirect never was removed and i just didnt use the PC enough.

anyway, malwarebytes catching the redirect is great, but thats a redundancy system... point being, how do we get this firefox address bar redirect obliterated?

before doing the above steps, i thought perhaps we should address this first. i await your response.

Hello electroshocked,

Your Firefox browser is corrupted. Please do the following:

Step 1.
Remove Program
  1. Click on Start, then click the Start Search box on the Start Menu.
  2. Copy and paste the value below without the word Code: into the open text entry box:
    Code: Select all
     appwiz.cpl
and press Enter - the Unistall or change a program list will be opened.
  3. Find the following entry, click on it, choose Uninstall, and give permission to continue:
    Mozilla Firefox
  4. Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
  5. When the program(s) have been uninstalled, please close Control Panel.
  6. Reboot you computer.

Step 2.
Install fresh Firefox
  1. Please open Firefox via any other browser you have.
  2. Click on Firefox Free Download green field and safe Firefox Setup 10.0.2.exe on the Desktop.
  3. Right click on Firefox Setup 10.0.2.exe select "Run As Administrator..." to run it. If prompted by UAC, please allow it.
  4. Then follow installation prompts...

Please include in your next reply:
  1. Do you have any problems executing the instructions?
  2. Do you see any changes in computer behavior?

Thanks,

No problems and all does appear well... though there is only so many times you can type in URLs before stopping due to tedium, and then, can one be sure they've addressed it enough times to ensure the redirect is gone? LOL. It does appear as such, and to its credit, I have typed in the address bar MANY more times than last when I reported an okay.

Considering that issue is solved, should I go back to your previous post and follow those instructions now? Also, any advice about Malwarebytes A-M? I mean, I like it so far but it does require purchase for full functionality (and multiple "licenses" if I want it on more than one pc[!])... and money is tight for me at the moment. So, I'm wondering if Superantispyware Free is a suitable alternative, or if Mwb A-M is the de facto choice? Also, what about the Norton "Security Suite" provided from my ISP at no extra charge; is it more advisable to go with a combo of AVAST FREE + Online Armor? Or perhaps even Outpost Security Suite (Free)?

Other changes are educating the gf with your thread on staying safe and requiring NoScript along with an anti-malware in addition to the AV.
