WinXP machine seems to be running slower, higher CPU usage

Unread postby thepno95 » February 4th, 2012, 5:58 pm

This may just be a matter of my computer getting older (too old?) and needing to be upgraded. It's an older Dell, P4-1.6Ghz, 1GB RAM, running WinXP Professional SP3. When I look at Task Manager it seems like CPU usage is up higher than I would expect it to be, and there are a bazillion processes running, most of which I don't recognize. I have IE 7.0, but 99% of my browsing is via Firefox, which is up to date.

The one thing I particularly notice is that I have a hard time getting smooth video online. That didn't use to be a problem, but now Youtube videos are often jumpy - audio is fine, but the video doesn't keep up. That's even if I bump quality down to 360, which used to work flawlessly.

I'm just looking for pointers on what might help the system run a bit faster.

thepno95,
Hopefully we can help speed things up for you.
If you can run this scan and post the contents of the two log files we can get started.
---------------------------------------------
Download the OTL Scanner
Please download OTL.exe by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
---------------------------------------------
Run a Scan with OTL
  • Double click on the OTL icon to run it.
  • Check the boxes labeled :
    • Scan All Users
    • LOP check
    • Purity check
    • Extra Registry > Use SafeList
  • Make sure all other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click on the Run Scan button at the top left hand corner. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so.
When the scan starts, OTL may appear to be frozen while it runs. Please be patient.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL. (desktop)
The Extras.txt file will only appear as a running Notepad document the very first time you run OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them as a reply. Use separate replies if more convenient.

thepno95,
A Hosts file is one which contains a list of malicious websites, and prevents inadvertent access by short-circuiting the call back to your own machine.
It is an effective security tool, but it looks like yours is outdated and not configured correctly.
We will take care of that.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Java(TM) 6 Update 22
Ad-Aware

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
----------------------------------------------
Perform a Custom Fix with OTL
Run OTL (Right click and choose "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
  • In the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following lines from the Code box (Do not include the word "Code"):
    Code: Select all
    :OTL
    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0022-ABCDEFFEDCBA} http://java.sun.com/update/1.6.0/jinsta ... s-i586.cab (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_22)
    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-ABCDEFFEDCBA} http://java.sun.com/update/1.6.0/jinsta ... s-i586.cab (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_22)
    O16 - DPF: {8AD9C840-044E-11D1-B3E9-00805F499D93} http://java.sun.com/update/1.6.0/jinsta ... s-i586.cab (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_22)
    [2011/12/27 18:04:46 | 000,000,000 | ---- | M] () -- C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\Ad-Aware Update (Weekly).job

    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c

    :Commands
    [PURITY]
    [emptyjava]
    [emptyflash]
    [EMPTYTEMP]
    [RESETHOSTS]
    [CREATERESTOREPOINT]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
  • Let the program run unhindered and reboot the PC when it is done.
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.
------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install the latest version of Java Runtime Environment from here : http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html, and install it to your computer.
Scroll down to the section on the page, labeled Java SE 6 Update 30, click on the button labeled Download JRE. Do NOT choose the button labeled "Download JDK".
If it won't allow you to get past the "Agree to the license" dialog, you will need to set your browser to temporarily allow scripts.
Check the button to agree to the license.
Select the link for your Platform Windows x86 offline, and click it.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it on your desktop, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.

During installation, be certain to Uncheck and Refuse any offer for "partner software" or toolbars.
When it finishes, you can remove the Installer from your desktop.

So we will be looking for the latest log OTL.txt

thepno95,
In the quest for improved performance, Avoid using an Registry Cleaners/Optimizers/Boosters/Helpers.
They can be dangerous to your machine.

To increase your protection going forward I would recommend we re-install a HOSTS file.
Be sure to follow the whole two-part procedure, and get the DNS Client service disabled before installing the HOSTS file.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Replace the Current HOSTS File with MVPs
You can read about HOSTS files here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

  • Disable DNS Client Service. This is necessary when installing a large HOSTS file.
    From Start, or Start, Run
Type services.msc in the box and hit <Enter>
Give permission to continue if necessary.
Scroll down to DNS Client on the list, Right Click it and choose Properties.
Under Service Status, click Stop. Wait until it reports the service stopped.
    Under Startup Type, choose Disabled.
    Then click Apply, OK
If this procedure was successful, proceed with the installation as follows:
  • Use HostsXpert to Install the HOSTS File
Download HostsXpert and unzip (extract) it to your computer, somewhere where you can find it.
    • Double click on HostsXpert.exe to launch the program. Give whatever Permissions are required.
    • In the bottom half of the left pane, click on File Handling
    • If the first button at the top is labeled Make Writeable?, click on it so the label changes to Make Read Only
    • Click third button from the bottom, labeled Download. A couple new buttons will appear at the top.
    • Click on the top button labeled MVPs Hosts and choose Replace
    • When asked to verify if you want to Replace present Hosts file, click OK.
    • When it finishes, click on File Handling again.
    • Click the button at the top labeled Make Read Only, so the label changes to Make Writeable?
    • Hit the X in the upper right corner to exit HostsXpert

You may have to give permission to Symantec at various times to Unlock the present default HOSTS file and install the new one.

------------------------------------------------------------
Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware

As you already have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed on your computer, could you please do a scan using this procedure:
  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (Right click and "Run as administrator")
  • Select the Update tab. Choose Check for Updates.
  • Restart Malwarebytes Anti-Malware after the Update if you have to.
  • After the update has been completed, select the Settings tab, then the Scanner Settings tab
  • For Action for Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUP), choose Show in results list and check for removal
  • Select the Scanner tab.
  • Select Perform Quick scan, then click on Scan
  • When done, you will be prompted. Click OK. If Items are found, then click on Show Results
  • Make sure all items are checked. Then click on Remove Selected
  • After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.
The same new log can also be found via the Logs tab when the application is re-started.
Note: MBAM may ask to reboot your computer so it can continue with the removal process, please do so immediately.
This allows MBAM to remove additional items that could not be removed while Windows is running.

After cleaning out all those temp files, the hard drive could probably benefit from using the Windows Disk Defragmenter on Drive C:
If you are probably familiar with it. If not, its here: Start >l Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.

I'll bet it's already faster. Let me know
If this goes well, we will install a small Temp File Cleaner for regular use on your desktop, and remove our tools.

Do folks here not recommend using AdAware? I've been using that, Spybot S&D and MBAM periodically for a few years now. If AdAware is no good, is there something else I should be using instead?

thepno95,
I can recommend Winpatrol, along with your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install WinPatrol - Download and Install the Free WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system.

----------------------------------------------
Start OTL, and hit the CleanUp button. It will remove itself and other tools.

----------------------------------------------
Download and Run Temp File Cleaner (TFC.exe)
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
You might want to Copy/Paste/Print these instructions and Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs... including your browser!
Double click to run it. (Right click and choose Run as Administrator in Vista or Win7)
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, it will report the total size of files removed. If it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.

You can run this every week or two to keep the system cleaned up.

Your system looks clean.
