Exclamation Mark in System Tray

Unread postby daytonguy » January 5th, 2012, 4:37 pm

My computer has been running slow for the past several weeks. today I noticed I am getting a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the system tray. If I try to click on the icon it goes away...only to return a few minutes or seconds later. I have not idea what this could be. My kids are on here playing online games and I'm afraid they may have downloaded a virus or malware.

I have run Malware and Avast and neither have identified anything suspicious.

Any help would be great. Below are my logs.

Hi daytonguy, :)

Welcome to the forum.

My nickname is mambass and I'll be helping you with any malware problems.

Before we begin...please read and follow these important guidelines so things will proceed smoothly.

  1. If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.
  2. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  3. Please read all instructions carefully before executing them and perform the steps in the order given.
lf you have any questions or problems executing these instructions then <<STOP>> do not proceed but rather post back with the question or problem.
  4. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured that any links I give are safe.
  5. You must have Administrator rights permissions for this computer.
  6. DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  7. DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  8. Only post your problem at one (1) help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  9. Only reply to this thread. Do not start another thread.
  10. The absence of symptoms does not imply the absence of malware. Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean".
  11. You might want to place a link to this thread in your Favorites/Bookmarks for easy access.
  12. No Reply Within 3 Days Will Result In Your Topic Being Closed! Please let me know in advance if you will not be able to reply within this time limit.
  13. The logs I request can take a while to research so please be patient.
  14. I am currently in training at Malware Removal University. Each set of instructions that I provide will be reviewed by a faculty member before being posted to this thread. This process may add a small amount of time to my replies. On the positive side you will have two people working together to resolve your malware issues.
Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection. I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

How to back up or transfer your data on a Windows-based computer

-----------------------------------------------------------

I am currently reviewing your log and will return as soon as possible with additional instructions.

Thanks,

Hi daytonguy, :)

I apologize for the delay in posting this reply.

We're going to disable Emsisoft Anti-Malware and WinPatrol while were are diagnosing your issues. Both of these are legitimate products however they can interfere with some of the tools that we use.

  1. Disable Emsisoft Anti-Malware on Startup
    1. Run the Anti-Malware Guard via the Start menu - Programs - Emsisoft Anti-Malware - Emsisoft Anti-Malware Guard.
    2. Go to the guard configuration and ensure the box "Enable protection on system startup" is DE-Activated.
    3. Close the Emsisoft Anti-Malware window.

  2. Disable WinPatrol on Startup
    1. Right-click the Scotty Dog icon in the system tray and select Options. A WinPatrol window will open.
    2. Select the Options tab.
    3. Uncheck (untick) the Automatically Run WinPatrol When Computer Starts box.
    4. Close the WinPatrol window.

  3. Reboot (restart) your computer

  4. Check Hard Disk For Errors
    1. Click Start > Run and then copy/paste the following command into the box (do not include the word "Code:") and click OK:
      Code: Select all
      cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
    2. A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
    3. A file and icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file in your reply.

Please include in your reply (you may post logs in separate replies if more convenient):
  1. The text of any error messages and/or a description of any problems you encountered while performing these steps.
  2. The contents of the checkhd.txt log.
  3. Please let me know if you are still seeing the yellow triangle in the system tray.

No errors or problems when performing those tasks

CheckDisk Log

The type of the file system is NTFS.

WARNING! F parameter not specified.
Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.

CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...
Deleting index entry PING_1~1.GIF in index $I30 of file 109294.

Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode.

I had actually removed Emsisoft from my machine about a day ago. When I did that I also deleted all of the temp files on the computer with Temp file Cleaner. After the reboot, the yellow exlamation point did go away, but I assumed it may have been a result of the temp file cleaning if I have a virus/malware infection. I didn't think Emsisoft would have caused a problem on the computer. Needless to say the yellow exclaimation point is gone. Does anything else look out of order to you?

Hi daytonguy :)

  1. Hard Disk Repair
IF Chkdsk has found any errors having to do with bad sectors in your file system, or if it reports that it cannot continue in Read-Only Mode, it needs to run a different sequence on reboot to do repairs. It can't repair the file system while Windows is running.
DO NOT START THIS SEQUENCE UNLESS YOU CAN DO WITHOUT THE MACHINE FOR AN HOUR OR TWO. It may not take very long , but could, depending on the number of files and folders.
It will not relinquish control until it is done.
You cannot stop it, and it would be a BIG mistake to pull the plug.

    1. Click Start > Run, then type cmd and press the Enter key.
    2. Type this black text into the command window at the prompt:
      chkdsk c: /F <==notice the /F, with one space between c: and /F
and then press the Enter key.
    3. Reply with the letter Y when asked if you would like to do the repair when the system restarts and you will then be returned to the Command Prompt C:\>.
    4. Type EXIT and press the Enter key to close the command window.
    5. Reboot (restart) your computer.
    6. During the reboot process the disk will be scanned again and the repairs will be performed. DO NOT touch the keyboard or mouse while this scan is taking place.
    7. The remainder of the normal boot process will occur after the scan has completed.

  2. Check Hard Disk For Errors Again
Note: This log will contain the results of the previous scan as well as that of the post-repair scan.

Please include in your reply:
  1. The text of any error messages and/or a description of any problems you encountered while performing these steps.
  2. The contents of the checkhd.txt log.
  3. A description of how your computer is running and any Malware symptoms that are still present.

Here you go. Everthing worked as you described except there looks like there is only one scan worth of info in the log and it shows errors.....crap.

LOG:

Hi daytonguy,

Unfortunately, you are in immediate need of a replacement hard drive.
You should copy any critical files off your machine, and get a hard drive replacement immediately.
Any delay may result in an inability to retrieve anything from it, and may result in a boot failure.

Hi daytonguy,

It's been 72 hours since I posted my instructions. I just wanted to remind you that, per Forum policy here, this thread may now be closed.

Could you please let me know if you still need help and, if so, if you require additional time to perform the requested tasks?

Thank you. :)

Since the resolution of this topic will likely require a hardware replacement, this topic will be closed.
