Infected with Win32:Malware-gen

Unread postby rbd » November 3rd, 2011, 10:16 pm

Hello.

It's the 1st time I write to this forum. I believe my laptop is infected with "Win32:Malware-gen".

NOTE:
Before I explain the issues, please note that on my laptop I have one "administrator-account" profile set up, used only for updating security software. Then I have set up for each user (including myself) his own "user-account" profile, for everyday's usage.

=========

CHARACTERISTICS:
Acer Laptop
Intel Celeron M, 1.60GHz
WinXP Professional v2002, SP3 (fully updated)
WindowsXP Firewall

Avast! Free Antivirus, v6.0 (fully updated)

Antispyware:
Spywareblaster
Spybot Search&Destroy
(both fully updated)

Browsers:
IE 8 (rarely used)
Firefox 7.0.1 (mostly used)

============

Issues/syntoms:

1) I have noticed, in the last 4-5 weeks, that after start-up when I log in my account, a few times the avast! logo at bottom-right corner of the desktop gives me a warning that the real-time shield is switched off, so I have to turn it back on manually.

2) I have been doing some boot-time scans with my antivirus. [I can paste the log if you need it]
A few days ago it found 2 archive files corrupted in the "C:\System Volume Information" folder.

3) In the last two days, two boot-time scans have revealed a virus defined as "Win32:Malware-gen" in a few files. The problem is that I cannot move these files to the virus chest or delete them; the only option that works is to ignore them, so they are still there (tonight there are two more infected files). After start-up I've tried to delete them from avast! but it doesn't allow me to.

I thought to delete them through the folders explorer (maybe even removing the entire folders) but didn't as I don't want to risk making it worse.

4) From tonight, when I right-click on a file, the Windows Installer comes up to install an update to Acer eDataSecurity Management (one of the infected files has the same name), but then aborts as it says it needs to be run as administrator.
When I do the right-click operation from the administrator profile, the installation starts but I cancel it immediately.

Can you please tell me what I should do now?
Is it a bad infection? How did it spread, if I only use user-accounts?

I paste below the reports from "dds" diagnostic.

Please help!!
Thanks in advance.

Hello rbd,

Welcome to the forum!

My name is maxi and I'll be helping you with any malware problems.

Currently I am working under the guidance of the MRU teachers and everything I post to you, must first be approved by them.
This additional review process can add some extra time to my responses, but I will post back with instructions for you as soon as possible.

Before we begin, please read and follow these important guidelines, so things will proceed smoothly.
  1. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  2. You must have Administrator rights, permissions for this computer.
  3. DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  4. DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  5. Only post your problem at (1) one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  6. Print each set of instructions if possible - your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  7. Only reply to this thread, do not start another one. Please, continue responding, until I give you the "All Clean!"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

I am currently reviewing your log and will return, as soon as possible, with additional instructions. In the meantime...
Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.

Please read all instructions carefully before executing and perform the steps, in the order given.
lf, you have any questions or problems, executing these instructions, <<STOP>> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Hello maxi.

Thank you for reading my post and helping me out with my issue. I hope it's not that bad and that we'll get to a positive end!

Just one question on your guideline no.4 (installing new software).
I assume it's still ok if during the cleaning process I still let my antivirus run its automatic updates, and I can also keep updatind Spywareblaster and Spybot S&D.
Please let me know if I shouldn't do this.

Also is it ok to install any Windows updates in the meantime (should they come available)?

I await further instructions.

Many thanks!

Hi rbd,

You can update your security programs as normal but don't install Windows updates until we are finished cleaning the computer.

Step 1
Run CKScanner

  • Please download CKScanner from Here
  • Important: - Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click CKScanner.exe and click Search For Files.
  • After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
  • A message box will verify the file saved.
  • Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.
Step 2
  • Please download MGA Diagnostic Tool and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on MGADiag.exe to run it.
  • Click Continue.
  • The program will run. It takes a while to finish the diagnosis, please be patient.
  • Once done, click on Copy.
  • Open Notepad and paste the contents in the window.
  • Save this file and copy/paste it in your next reply.

In your next reply please include:
The log from CKScanner.
The log from MGADiag.exe

Regards maxi :)

Hi maxi,

Just run the two diagnostic tools.

I paste below both reports (the 1st one is just 3 lines!) for you.

By the way, are you already able to say whether my infection is a bad one? Sorry, but I'm quite nervous... :?

I must say no other issues seem to happen apart from the one described in my Post #1 (i.e. the Windows Installer coming up if I right-click on a file), which actually occurs even if I just delete a file without right-clicking on it.

Regards,
rbd

Cracked Software

May I draw your attention to the topic: ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST, which you should have read before posting for help.

The section Use of "cracked" programs explains why we do not offer help for such computers.

This topic is now closed.

Edit: As it appears the invalid software issues have now been resolved, this OP is cleared to receive assistance as of February 2, 2012.
