OK, looks like the Control Set issue has been resolved, and from the results of all the previous scans we've run, it would be reasonable to suppose that your infection has been removed, and most of its effects on your computer.

However, you're still unable to connect.

Most infection caused connection failures, are caused by a corruption of your Layered Service Protocols. A file or files get removed incorrectly by a tool, and the "stack" get damaged, which is why I had Windows re-build your stack with the command .... netsh winsock reset .... which we ran with OTL. Another cause is a corrupted DNS or TCP/IP setting, and we've checked those are OK.

There is one more thing we can attempt .....

  • Double click OTL.exe to launch the programme.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the code box below into the Custom Scans/Fixes box.
Code: Select all
:Files
ipconfig /renew /c

  • Click the Run Fix button.
  • OTL will now process the instructions.
  • When finished a box will open asking you to open the fix log, click OK.
  • The fix log will open.
  • Copy/Paste the log in your next reply please.

Note: If necessary, OTL may re-boot your computer, or request that you do so, if it does, re-boot your computer. A log will be produced upon re-boot.

Let me know if you're now able to connect.

OK, is your connection to your router by wi-fi or cable ?

Download this PDF file ..... http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=199821 ..... and work through the troubleshooting steps described in it.

Let me know how you get on.

My connection is wired, so this made a good bit of the PDF useless for me. I still did everything I could, but nothing happened. I think it may be a problem with my network adapter, despite it saying it's working fine. Any advice on what else it could be or how I can see if the adapter is the problem and how I can fix it?

My knowledge of wired Networks (or Networks in general) is fairly limited, so I think it would be best if I handed you over to someone who specialises in dealing with those type of problems, they're much more likely to resolve your connection difficulties than I am.

My speciality is Malware removal, and as far as I can see, that is not the cause of your problem.

Below is a list of forums I know that deal with Networking problems, and where the quality of the help is generally of a high standard.

http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?showforum=128
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/forum/11-networking/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum21.html
http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/ ... y.php?f=31

In each case I've linked directly to the Networking section of those forums.

If anyone asks if you've checked for infection, please feel free to refer them to this topic.

Please understand that I am no trying to fob you off on someone else, my purpose here is solely to direct you to the best place to get your connection problems resolved. I'm happy to keep this topic open, but we're rapidly reaching the limits of my knowledge here, and there are lots of others whose knowledge of Networking is far superior.

As far as the infection removal process is concerned, we're finished, and you need to remove the programs we used to clean your computer.

First

Let's clear out Combofix and the files/folders it created
  • Click Start > Run
  • Copy/Paste ComboFix /Uninstall into the Run box.
  • Click OK
  • Combofix will now delete its files and folders and also perform the following function.
    • Clears System Restore cache and creates a new Restore point. This will remove any "malicious" System Restore files, which may have been created whilst your computer was infected.
IMPORTANT
  • Do not use your computer while Combofix is running.
  • Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Next

Let's clear out OTL and the files and folders it created. This will also remove TDSSKiller.
  • Double click OTL.exe to launch the programme.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button.
  • OTL will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programmes alerts you, allow it access.
  • You will be prompted to allow the clean up procedure, click Yes
  • When finished exit out of OTL
  • Now delete OTL.exe (if still present).

Next

Please delete the following ....

MGA Diagnostic Tool
CKScanner.exe
aswMBR.exe
MBRFix.exe
FRST.exe

Please read the article below which will give you a few suggestions for how to minimise your chances of getting another infection.

Hmmm...I am still unsure of whether or not the infection is truly gone, as I am still unable to run either of the Antivirus Programs I had before starting this topic, but I will go to those forums and ask for help there to see if they can help with my connection issues.

It would have helped if you had mentioned that you're still unable to run your AV programs.

Uninstall them, then try re-installing them, then let me know if you're still unable to run them.

Well, this is an interesting development. I uninstalled both of the programs I couldn't open, Trend Micro and Malwarebytes. After I restarted, before I re-installed them, I tried to open my browser out of curiosity. Suddenly my internet connection is working again! I don't want to do much without an anti-virus program, though, so if you could recommend any free programs to install on my computer I would be more grateful than I already am. Afterward I should be fine. Thank you for all your help!

If you look at the link in my earlier post ..... viewtopic.php?p=557960#p557960 .... you'll find a whole lot of recommendations about security.

And links to some free AV and other security programs .... viewtopic.php?p=557965#p557965

Glad things are working OK for you again. :)
