My Wife's Computer Is Sending E-Mail On Its Own

Unread postby ay8389 » August 28th, 2011, 3:18 pm

My wife's computer is sending e-mail to all addresses in her Hotmail adress list. The e-mails have no subject and the message body contains a single line of text with a URL. There URLs change from message to message, but always end with the text "viviani1.html".

I have run both MalwareBytes and McAfee, but niether detected any problems. About a week ago, a McAfee popup stated that it removed a trojan.

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Re: My Wife's Computer Is Sending E-Mail On Its Own

Unread postby Wingman » September 1st, 2011, 9:34 am

Hello ay8389 ... Welcome to the forum.

I apologize for the delay getting to your log, as you can see the forum is very busy..

My name is Wingman, and I'll be helping you with any malware problems.
The logs I request can take a while to research, so please be patient.

Before we begin...please read and follow these important guidelines, so things will proceed smoothly.
  1. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  2. You must have Administrator rights, permissions for this computer.
  3. DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so or install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process.
  4. Only- post your problem at (1) one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  5. Print each set of instructions...if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  6. Only- reply to this thread, do not start another ... Please, continue responding, until I give you the "All Clean"
  7. Failure to respond for 3 days, will result in your topic being closed.

Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.

The steps presented in these posts are for this person and machine ONLY. Do not apply these steps to your own system, without the guidance of a trained malware removal helper. Doing so, may possibly damage your system, preventing it from starting.

Please read all instructions carefully before executing and perform the steps, in the order given.
lf, you have any questions or problems, executing these instructions, <<STOP>> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Step 1.
Create a System Restore Point - W7
  1. Go to Start > Control Panel... click the System icon in the Control Panel.
  2. In the left pane click on System Protection.
  3. When the Dialog comes up, click on theSystem protection tab.
  4. Check that the drive letter where Windows is located (usually C:\ ) indicates System protection ON.
(This indicates System restore is turned ON for the Windows drive).
  5. Click the Create button to create a new restore point. In the Name dialog, type a descriptive name... then click Create.
  6. You will get a message that the Restore Point was created successfully. Click Close.
  7. Click OK and close the System window in the Control Panel.
< STOP > If you did not successfully complete this step. < STOP > Do not continue with any other steps, post back and let me know!

Step 2.
Rkill
Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.
Note: If you get an alert that Rkill is infected, ignore it. The alert is a fake warning given by the rogue software, trying to "protect" itself from being terminated or removed. If you see such a warning, leave the warning on the screen, then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this sometimes allows you to bypass the malware's attempt to protect itself, so that Rkill can perform its routine.
Please download Rkill... by Grinler. Save it to your Desktop.
Alternate download links: Two or Three
WiNlOgOn.exe
eXplorer.exe
iExplore.exe
uSeRiNiT.exe
  1. Double click on the Rkill Desktop icon.
  2. A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
    1. If this does not happen... delete the file, then download and use the next link provided.
    2. If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
Do not reboot your machine until asked to do so. If no version of Rkill would run, please let me know.
When finished, Notepad will open with a log file, automatically saved at C:\rkill.log.
  3. Please copy and paste the contents of the rkill.log file, in your next reply.
Please leave Rkill on the Desktop unless instructed otherwise.

Step 3.
Defogger
CD Emulator Software (Daemon Tools, Alcohol, etc) use drivers that can interfere with rootkit scans, so we'll temporarily disable them.
Disable Drivers
Please download DeFogger... by jpshortstuff. Save it to your desktop.
  1. Double click DeFogger.exe to run the tool. The application window will appear.
Vista - W7 users: Right-click on Defogger.exe and choose "Run As Administrator". If UAC prompted, allow it.
  2. Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers.
  3. Click Yes to continue. A 'Finished!' message will appear. Click OK.
  4. Click OK when DeFogger asks to reboot the machine.
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Step 4.
ComboFix
Image
Please download ComboFix.exe... © Copyrighted to sUBs. Save it to your desktop. <<--- IMPORTANT!! .
Alternate download site: here
If you previously downloaded ComboFix, please delete that version and download it again. This tool is frequently updated.

The first thing you need to do is print out How-To-Use-ComboFix. Read these instructions thoroughly.
You will not have Internet access when you execute ComboFix.
Please disable any Antivirus or Firewall you have active, as shown in this topic. Close all open application windows.

  1. Double click the ComboFix.exe icon on your desktop to begin execution. If you receive the "Open File - Security Warning"... press Run.
  2. Press Yes to the Disclaimer prompt.
ComboFix screen appears... preparing to run. ComboFix will now begin creating a System Restore Point and then backup your registry.
  3. If not already installed... Press Yes to the "Install Recovery Console" prompt.
  4. Press Yes at the Recovery Console installation results prompt...
Do Not use your keyboard or mouse click anywhere in the ComboFix window, as this may cause the program to stall or crash!
When finished... Notepad will open ... ComboFix will produce a log file called "ComboFix.txt".
  5. Please copy/paste the contents of ComboFix.txt... in your next reply.
Do NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is a powerful tool intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, NOT for general public or personal use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to serious problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. This site, sUBs and myself will not be responsible for any damage caused to your machine by misusing or running ComboFix on your own. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer.

** Enable your Antivirus and Firewall, before connecting to the Internet again! **

Step 5.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. RKill - rkill.log file contents.
  3. ComboFix - ComboFix.txt file contents.
  4. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

Hi Wingman. Thank you for helping me out with this problem. No worries on the delay, I was on the road for the last few days myself and just got back into town late last night.

I have run through the steps you listed:

1) Restore point created with no problem

2) Rkill run with no problem (log below)

3) Defogger run with no problem

4) ComboFix run but with a possible issue. I disabled anti-virus and firewall and set them to restart with the next PC reboot. ComboFix ran through its scan steps no problem, but when those steps completed, the laptop rebooted. The instructions do not mention anything about ComboFix kicking off a reboot and I was bit surprised by this. To be honest, I was not watching the screen closely and I am not certain if ComboFix initiated the reboot. After rebooting, ComboFix continued to run with the "Preparing Log Report" message, but was now displaying "Access Denied" messages in the command prompt box (could this be related to AV restarting on reboot?).

After a few mintutes, it gave me the "Almost done ..." message and then after a minute or so poped open the log report (contents below). However, any attempt to run any program (like a web browser, or even Sticky Notes) resulted in a popup with the following message: "Illegal operation attempted on registry key marked for deletion".

I then rebooted and was able to open IE to post this response. So far, everything seems to be working normally since this (2nd) reboot.

Thanks again for your help!
Al

Re: My Wife's Computer Is Sending E-Mail On Its Own

Unread postby Wingman » September 2nd, 2011, 10:32 am

Hello ay8389

Please do not make any changes to your system: do not add or remove any software, run any scans or "fix" programs and/or remove any files unless instructed to do so, by me. Please read these instructions carefully before executing and then perform the steps, in the order given. If you have any questions or problems, executing these instructions, <<STOP>> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

The steps presented in these posts are for this person and machine ONLY. Do not apply these steps to your own system, without the guidance of a trained malware removal helper. Doing so, may possibly damage your system, preventing it from starting.

If there will be times during the fix that you will not be available to reply withi the 3 day time frame, lease let me know so I can keep this topic open.

I will ask you to create a System Restore Pont (SRP) before executing any other instructions as a safeguard, in case we need it.

Step 2.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  1. Please start MBAM (Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) again.
You must be connected to the Internet to obtain any updates.
  2. Press the Update tab.. then press the Check for Updates...button. <<---Important!
Once any updates are installed or you get the message that you are up-to-date
  3. Press the Scanner tab...
  4. Select FULL SCAN this time... then press the Scan...button. This scan will take a while, so please be patient.
    When the scan finishes...
  5. Check all items except any items (if present) in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
  6. Let MBAM remove what it can... if there are files to be deleted on reboot... please reboot the machine so MBAM can finish the removal.
If you rebooted, then you'll need to start MBAM again.
  7. Press the LOG... tab. Locate the most current log file.
Please copy and paste the most recent log (from this new run) in your next reply.

Step 3.
ESET NOD32 Online Scan
Vista - W7 users: You will need to to right-click on the IE or FF icons on the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download "esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe" when prompted... then double click on it to install.

Please temporarily disable your Anti-virus real-time protection. If active, it could impact the online scan.
Please go to ESET Online Scanner - © ESET All Rights Reserved... to run an online scan.
** Make sure you are using an account that has Administrative privileges **
Press the "ESET Online Scanner" button.
  1. Check the box next to "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  2. Click "Start"... a window will open... it may appear nothing is happening... please be patient.
  3. Click Yes... at the run ActiveX prompt. Click Install... at the install ActiveX prompt.
Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.
  4. Click "Start". Make sure that the options:
    • Remove found threats is UNCHECKED
    • Leave the "default" settings under Advanced as they are, if not set , please check:
      • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
      • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
      • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  5. Click "Start"... ESET scanner will begin to download the virus signatures database.
When the signatures have been downloaded, the scan will start automatically.
  6. Wait for the scan to finish... it may take a while... please be patient. When the scan is finished...
  7. Use Notepad to open the log file located at C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\log.txt
  8. Copy and paste the contents of log.txt in your next reply.
Remember to enable your Anti-virus protection... before continuing!

Step 4.
SystemLook
Please download SystemLook_x64.exe... by jpshortstuff and save it to your Desktop.
Alternate download site.
  1. Double-click SystemLook_x64.exe to run it.
If you receive an "Open file - security warning"... asking "Do you want to run this file?"... press the Run button.
  2. Highlight and copy the following entries: ... into SystemLook's main text entry window.
    Code: Select all
    :Regfind
    viviani1.html

  3. Press the Look button to start the scan.
When finished, a Notepad window will open with the results of the scan.
A file will be created (on your Desktop) with the results of the scan, named "SystemLook.txt"
  4. Please post the contents of the SystemLook.txt file in your next reply.

Step 5.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. New full MBAM scan output.
  3. ESET online scanner output.
  4. SystemLook.txt file contents
  5. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

Thanks for the rapid response!

Steps performed:

1) Restore point created

2) MalwareBytes Updated and Full Scan run (log below)

3) AV disabled and ESET scan completed (log below). AV re-enabled. I am guessing that the ESET log results are not what you ar looking for but this was the only log file I could find. The scan completed with a report of finding no malicious items.

4) SystemLook scan executed (log below)

Thanks,
Al

Hello Al

It's a good thing that the scan showed nothing. :)
The email account password should be changed, if not already done.

Please tell me how the computer is behaving... still emails being sent on their own?

Hi Wingman,
The account password was changed the first time we saw the e-mails going out. No-one on my wife's distribution list has received additonal e-mail since the first batch that went out. My wife's hotmail account was suspended a few days ago for sending spam, whjich lead to be concerned that her account was being used to send messages to addresses not on her mailing list. We were able to re-activiate the account and wehave not seen any other suspicious activity.

Since the scans are all comming clean, I am starting to wonder if somehow the account was hacked rather than a virus on the computer itself.

Hello Al

It's possible the email account was hacked... we could run more scans but I think they too would come back clean.

I would suggest you discontinue using the old hotmail account (or any that were sending spam) and create a new one, with a slightly different name and a brand new password, then inform the contact list entries of the address change.

Give it some time and post back Sunday (Sep 04) with an update or sooner if problems are observed.
