Computer slow, crashing, all around sick

Unread postby ThanosIsKing » June 8th, 2011, 4:08 pm

Lately my computer has been on the fritz. It's been incredibly slow to even start up, sometimes taking up to 10 minutes to go from the login screen to the desktop. All I get in that time is a black screen. BitDefender has told me I've got Rootkit.Patched.TDSS.Gen, accessed by AvastSvc.exe in "C:\ProgramData\AlwilSoftware\Avast5\arpot\9e159-780-0.dat". avast! also pops up periodically with warnings of bad stuff in either explorer.exe or other system processes.

I do not have a DDS program, and the computer is so slow that a DDS log isn't showing up. I hope that my HiJack This log will be sufficient. Here it is:

Hi ThanosIsKing,

Firstly, welcome to the Malware Removal Forum. :)
My name is Scolabar, and I'll be helping you with your malware problems.
Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient.

I am currently working under the guidance of the MRU teachers, everything I post to you, will need to be reviewed by them.
This additional review process can add some extra time to my responses, but hopefully not too much.

Please note the following important guidelines before proceeding:
  1. The instructions that will be provided are for YOUR computer and system only!
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable
  2. If you have any questions or do not understand something, please do not hesitate to ask, don't guess or assume.
  3. Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  4. Only reply to this thread, do not start another. Please, continue responding, until I give you the All Clean.
Absence of symptoms does not necessarily mean that everything is clear.
  5. DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  6. DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  7. Print each set of instructions, if possible. Your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  8. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  9. Note: No Reply Within 3 Days Will Result In Your Topic Being Closed!

Please Note: If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this, it would be advisable for you to back up any important files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

If you follow these guidelines, things should proceed smoothly. :)
I am currently reviewing your log and will return, as soon as possible, with additional instructions.

Thank you for your patience.

Hi ThanosIsKing,

Apologies for the delay in responding.

ThanosIsKing wrote:BitDefender has told me I've got Rootkit.Patched.TDSS.Gen, ...
Please Note: The following warning (Step 1) is given on the understanding that it has given without sight of the BitDefender scan log.
However, because of the severity of such infections it is far better that you are made aware sooner rather than later so you are able to take action at the earliest opportunity and mitigate any potential damage or loss.

Step 1:
Rootkit Warning

Your computer shows signs of multiple infections, including a Rootkit infection.
A rootkit is a set of software tools intended for concealing running processes, files or system data from the operating system.

You are strongly advised to do the following:
  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft
and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords
(ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, any online activity you perform, requiring a username and password).
Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.

Due to its rootkit functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again.
Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and re-installation of the operating system (OS).

This decision will have to be made by you.

An attempt can be made to clean this machine but there will be no guarantee that it won't still be compromised, afterwards.

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:
When should I re-format and reinstall my OS
What are Remote Access Trojans and why are they dangerous
How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it
How and Where to backup your files
Restoring your backups

Please confirm how you would like to proceed.

If you confirm you have read and understood the above Rootkit Warning and wish to proceed with an attempted cleanup, please continue with the following steps.

Let's now deal with a couple of other important issues:

    Step 2:
    Warning - Multiple Antivirus Programs!

Your logs indicate that you are running more than one Anti-virus program!

      avast! Free Antivirus
      BitDefender Internet Security 2011

Running more than one Anti-virus program is not recommended because:
    1. They can conflict with each other.
    2. Report the other antivirus software as malicious.
    3. Antivirus programs use an enormous amount of computer's resources actively scanning your computer.
    4. Can cause your computer to run slowly, become unstable and crash.
I strongly suggest you uninstall one of them. Which one you decide to uninstall is your decision.

    Step 3:
    Advisory - P2P Software Present!

IMPORTANT There are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs installed on your computer.

      StreamTorrent 1.0
      muTorrent Toolbar
      vShare Plugin

As long as you have the P2P program(s) installed, as per Forum Policy, I can offer you no further assitance.
If you choose NOT to remove the program please indicate that in your next reply and this topic will be closed.
Otherwise, please perform the following steps:

    Remove P2P Program(s)
    1. Click on Start > Control Panel and double-click on Programs and Features.
    2. Locate the following program:

        StreamTorrent 1.0
        muTorrent Toolbar
        vShare Plugin

    3. Click on the Change/Remove button to uninstall it.
Repeat insructions 2 and 3 for each of the programs listed.
    4. While you are in Programs and Features please can you also uninstall the following programs:
Note: Spybot - Search & Destroy can interfere with the clean up process which is why I am asking for it to be removed. It is simpler to ask you to uninstall the program temporarily than to disable it.

        Conduit Engine
        DAEMON Tools Toolbar
        Spybot - Search & Destroy

    5. When the program(s) have been uninstalled Close the Programs and Features and Control Panel windows.

Please Note: By using any form of P2P networking to download files you can anticipate infestations of malware to occur. The P2P program itself, may be safe but the files may not. Therefore use P2P software at your own risk! Keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation.

Reference citing risk factors, using P2P programs: How to Prevent the Online Invasion of Spyware and Adware

    Step 4:
    HJT - Uninstall Manager Log

    1. Please Launch HijackThis and generate another Uninstall List.
Vista - W7 users: Right-click on hijackthis.exe and select "Run As Administrator" to launch the program. If you receive a UAC prompt, please allow it.
    2. Copy and Paste the entire contents of uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.

    Step 5:
    Include in Next Post

    1. Did you have any problems carrying out the instructions?
    2. uninstall_list.txt.
    3. Do you have the original Windows installation media for your PC?

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
