Hi,
Short story: think the computer got infected the other day, have had a bunch of problems since then but have been able to resolve most (i think?), but one symptom remains -- critical stop sound plays at startup, and startup seems slower than normal. I'm thinking I may have just treated the symptoms of infection but not fixed the root cause...or I have gotten rid of the infection but have not fully repaired any damage it did (or damage I did in trying to clean up the PC). Any insights or help would be greatly appreciated; please let me know if you need more information.
All my troubles started 2 days ago: First noticed a rash of random IE pop-ups (which was especially odd considering I use firefox). Then noticed that clicking on links in google search results would redirect to spam sites. This happens intermittently and is still occurring. Then things went from bad to worse; upon a restart after the pop-ups, XP wouldnt load at all, and all i got was a black screen with a flashing cursor. Used XP install disk, recovery console, and FIXMBR and was able to get the OS to load.
Then, upon startup I would get a random "google earth" explorer folder that would always open, and then a popup from Outlook Express wanting to compress files. I managed to get rid of both of those problems by uninstalling a few programs (google talk) and running a HijackThis and removing a BHO that had no name and no file. But I also would get (and am still experiencing) a critical stop sound without any message at XP startup after the opening jingle plays. Also, windows installer would try to run each time an office 2007 product was opened, event log under applications said something about The resource 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pip\ not existing, among other errors, but i just let the installer run though one time and that seems to have fixed that problem. Also seeing an intermittent error in the system event logs The System Restore filter encountered the unexpected error '0xC0000243' while processing the file 'SrtETmp' on the volume 'HarddiskVolume2'. It has stopped monitoring the volume. And system restore will create a restore point but will not complete a restore back to any saved point.
I ran Malwarebytes and it removed several trojans, here's that log file below. I had also previously run Norton and Kasperkey and they both found & supposedly removed viruses too. My dds and attach logs follow the malwarebytes log.
Thanks!!
