After rebooting my PC I started getting this message....

The server at www.yahoo.com can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed. DNS is the web service that translates a website's name to its internet address. This error is most often caused by having no connection to the internet or a misconfigured network. It can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing Google Chrome from accessing the network.
Here are some suggestions:
Reload this web page later.

Check your internet connection. Reboot any routers, modems, or other network devices you may be using.
Check your DNS settings. Contact your network administrator if you're not sure what this means.
Try disabling DNS prefetching by following these steps: Go to Wrench menu > Options > Under the Hood and deselect "Use DNS pre-fetching to improve page load performance."
Try adding Google Chrome as a permitted program in your firewall or antivirus software's settings. If it is already a permitted program, try deleting it from the list of permitted programs and adding it again.
If you use a proxy server, check your proxy settings or check with your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working.
If you don't believe you should be using a proxy server, try the following steps: Go to Wrench menu > Options > Under the Hood > Change proxy settings > LAN Settings and deselect "Use a proxy server for your LAN."
Error 105 (net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED): Unable to resolve the server's DNS address.

It goes away after I reboot my router/modem but then it happens again. I didn't do any of the suggestions on the message yet. How should I proceed?

I still have to reboot the modem/router after performing all those steps. Once I do that every works fine...

Let's try setting your DNS settings manually rather than automatically and see if that resolves things, we can always set them back to auto if it doesn't.

  • Double click OTL.exe to launch the programme.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the code box below into the Custom Scans/Fixes box.
Code: Select all
:Files
ipconfig /flushdns /c

  • Click the Run Fix button.
  • OTL will now process the instructions.
  • When finished a box will open asking you to open the fix log, click OK.
  • The fix log will open.
  • No need to post the log unless it fails to flush dns

Next

  • Disconnect from the Internet
  • Click Start
  • In the Search programs and files box type Network Connections
  • At the top of the search list click on View Network Connections
  • Right click on your connection and select Properties
  • Click on the Networking tab
  • Under the this connection uses the following items field, right click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and select Properties
  • Click Use the following DNS server addresses, and then type the preferred DNS server IP 208.67.220.220 and alternate DNS server IP 208.67.222.222 addresses in the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server boxes.
  • Click OK.
  • Under the this connection uses the following items field, right click on Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and select Properties
  • Click Use the following DNS server addresses, and then type the preferred DNS server IP 208.67.220.220 and alternate DNS server IP 208.67.222.222 addresses in the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server boxes.
  • Click OK and close all open windows.

Do you still need to reset your router to get a connection ?

If you can't connect after changing your DNS setting, change things back to Obtain DNS Server automatically and let me know.

Gary,

I went ahead and upgraded my router, got everything hooked up and configured PC/XBOX is working flawlessly at the moment. Any other suggestions/instructions? If not I have one question, what else can I do to avoid this type of thing again? I have avast and run MWB frequently and this happened anyways...

We just need to remove the programs we've been using to clean your machine, then below I've posted a link to a series of posts on how to maximise your security.

Let's clear out OTL and the files and folders it created. This will also remove TDSSKiller.
  • Double click OTL.exe to launch the programme.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button.
  • OTL will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programmes alerts you, allow it access.
  • You will be prompted to allow the clean up procedure, click Yes
  • When finished exit out of OTL
  • Now delete OTL.exe (if still present).

As far as I can see, your computer looks clear of infection now.

Are you still noticing any problems ?
  • If you are let me know about them.
  • If not it's time to make your computer more secure.

Please read the article below which will give you a few suggestions for how to minimise your chances of getting another infection.

If your computer is running slowly after your clean up, please read.
