HELP...extremely slow moving computer

I have a 2004 Gateway desktop computer, which had until last Monday, 256 megs of Ram. I purchased a NEW 1 G chip and added it to my computer. Expecting miraculous results.....I found that my computer is moving as slow as a SemiTruck in a 5 mph zone!!! The chip is installed correctly by the way. I had a program called Malware Bytes on here...but lost it. My daughter used her AVG disc to clean the computer...it found 7 Trojans the first scan. It is set to run every 3 hours now...and does. I am at the end of my rope and soooo tired of this slow loading and slow moving computer. What is my problem and how do I fix it?
