Internet explorer cant start

Unread postby Basacag » December 27th, 2010, 5:17 pm

Hi

This is happening on my sons computer - I already have a case open for mine.

Everytime he tries to open IE it closes with the snd dont send but no other reason for the failure apart from cant open this page (Google) which was working fine a few days ago.

I have not run AVG even though this seems like viral activity to the untrained eye as it seemsed to cause me more problems.

Thanks in advance.

Hi again Basacag,
On this machine, don't run AVG, whatever you do, and don't give it permission to remove ANYTHING.
This has a pile of junk on it, as you may know from your other experience. If AVG is used, it may permanently trash your system.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {27B4851A-3207-45A2-B947-BE8AFE6163AB} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7DB2D5A0-7241-4E79-B68D-6309F01C5231} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B164E929-A1B6-4A06-B104-2CD0E90A88FF} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Rwekotaxaroyuyev] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\avevubeqovuzi.dll",Startup
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Qyivad] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\rextrlo3.dll",Startup
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BrowserChoice] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\browserchoice.exe" /run
O4 - Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.mcafee.com

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Limewire
Spybot Search & Destroy

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
If the Spybot Uninstaller asks whether you want to remove all files and settings, answer YES. If it reports that it cannot remove all files, that's OK.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download Each of the Following (5) tools and Save to your desktop
DO NOT RUN ANY OF THEM YET.-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis (double-click in XP)
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl +A), copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the log contents into a reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
READ CAREFULLY >>> Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder.
In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish.
Please paste the contents into your next reply.

So we are looking for a fresh HiJackThis log, and the Installed Programs list (not the startup list) from HiJackThis.
Tell me if all the downloads are available on the desktop.

Yes it is, but it might be easier to download the Firefox installer on your other machine, transfer it to this desktop, and install it.
Then at least this machine may be able to download its own stuff.

So go ahead with whatever works and let me know.

Basacag,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Hi askey127

same as mine, AVG not responding to removal, htmlayout.dll missing so cant remove using it's uninstaller either.

Should I remove it with the app we used on my PC?

Cheers

Hi askey127

OK, I did the AVG removal with the Revo utility and rebooted.

installed antivir. It seemed to auto upgrade and start a scan. However when I returned to it it had locked up at 67%, had a repetitive error popup(which I am sorry to say I failed to make a note of) and 2 viruses in a popup. I rebooted and now windows starts but there are no icons, just the desktop background pic.

I tried safe mode and that too just presents a black screen.

During a restart the system bleeps like antivir has found something during a scan when entering the windows account. (click the name Icon)

My son will go mad, he was so pleased to get his internet access back...

Cheers

See if you can get the desktop back this way:
hit Crtl-Alt-Del keys simultaneously once.
Task manager should come up.
Click File, New task and type explorer.exe

error box

windows cannot access specified device, path, or file. You may not have permission to access the item.

in safe mode as administrator I did the same thing and a command line box briefly started and closed again. No errors that I could see.

Basacag,
We can try this as an option to avoid doing a complete Reformat/Re-install, or a complete System Recovery.
Either of those would wipe out all the installed programs.
This infection may be bad enough, with enough system files corrupted, that the machine cannot be rescued otherwise.

No choice but to ask you to try this.
Cannot be sure this is the problem, but some machines with this issue have had success in the past.
--------------------------------------------
Boot up the machine to the blank desktop.

hit CTRL-Alt-Del to bring up Task Manager.
Click File, New Task
Type regedit in the Open: box and click OK.
Close the Task Manager

Browse to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File ExecutionOptions

Under this key there may be subkeys named explorer and iexplorer.
If so, select the explorer and iexplorer subkeys, one at a time, and click Edit , Delete.
They are not supposed to be there, and are added by infections to the Image File ExecutionOptions key.
Close the Registry Editor.
Restart the computer.

They are not there, looks like a reload...that will be painful as it was an upgrade to XP from Windows 98.
May be worth seeing if I can pick up a copy of XP cheap somewhere.

my son only really uses his PC for social networking, surfing and homework so loss of application software is not a big deal.

If that's the only use of the machine, you might want to reformat and install a copy of Linux Mint.
http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1581
Lower down on the page, click on:
Download Linux Mint 10 CD 32-bit

It's easy to use.
You can burn the file to a CD, and boot the machine with it to try it out and have a look.
The same CD will install the system if you like it.

You don't need to fix the machine first.
XP is not really available any more, and any copy you buy is likely to be illegal.
