Otis,
--------------------------------------------
TDSSKiller - Rootkit Removal Tool
Please download the TDSSKiller.exe by Kaspersky... save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
  1. Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista - W7 users: Right-click and select "Run As Administrator".
If TDSSKiller does not run... rename it. Right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. ektfhtw.com).
If you don't see file extensions, please see: How to change the file extension.
  2. Click the Start Scan button. Do not use the computer during the scan!
  3. If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  4. If malicious objects are found, they will show in the "Scan results - Select action for found objects" and offer 3 options.
    • Ensure Cure (default) is selected... then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
    • If Cure is not offered as an option, choose Skip.
  5. A log file named TDSSKiller_version_dd.mm.yyyy_hh.mm.ss_log.txt will be created and saved to the root directory. (usually Local Disk C:).
  6. Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.
If, for some reason, you can't locate the text file to paste into your reply, just tell me, but DO NOT run the program a second time.

It looks like a rootkit that has been repaired.
Tell me how the machine is running.
Also, I would like to know if you have run TDSSKiller before.

Thanks askey127, haven't had a chance to do much yet but appears to be running faster. I'm getting an error message when I try to open Outlook telling me I'm running the wrong version of Java. Outlook is downloading e-mails but will not send them. Assuming maybe I deleted the wrong version of Java when we started but can't say for sure. Can I download newer version at this point? Can/should I reinstall Adaware and Spybot? Also, I haven't run TDSSKiller before. I did run AVG Antirootkit Free some months ago. Any other advice on security programs that should or shouldn't be run/installed (preferably free) would be much appreciated.

Otis,
After you uninstalled all the old Java versions, which was necessary, we did not yet install the new one.
Let's do that now, and then get an update so we can cleanup, and make recommendations going forward.
------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install the latest version of Java Runtime Environment from here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
In the first section on the page, labeled JDK 6 Update 22 (JDK or JRE), click on the button labeled Download JRE. Do NOT choose the button labeled "Download JDK".
Select the Platform Windows and check the box to agree to the license.
Choose the Windows Offline installation version and click on the link.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it on your desktop, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis (double-click in XP)
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl +A), copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the log contents into a reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder.
In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish.
Please paste the contents into your next reply.

Otis,
Your machine looks OK.

As long as your Norton Antivirus is paid for, and up to date, I would keep it.
If/when the Norton Antivirus is no longer paid or up to date, I can recommend either Microsoft Security Essentials or Avira Antivir as an optional Free replacement.
If you want to install one of those two to replace Norton, first download the Microsoft or Avira Installer online, then Uninstall Norton, then run your new downloaded installer. (You should never have two antivirus applications running at the same time).

I would Also keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, (the only anti-spyware program you will need). Start it, update it and run a scan every week or two.

I would keep the Agnitum Outpost Firewall, at least for now.
Agnitum won't be supported much longer, as they are discontinuing it, and will be pressuring you to go for the newer paid version.
If you ever Uninstall the Agnitum Firewall, be sure to go to The Security Center in Control panel, and make sure the Windows Firewall is turned ON.
It's a controversial subject, but third party firewalls seem to be mostly worth the nuisance for portable laptops that are used for travel.
If the machine is behind a router and used at home, the separate firewall seems less necessary, and the Windows Firewall should be OK.
