Unread postby thefuse » November 28th, 2005, 9:21 am

avg picked up a trojan called Downloader.Generic with two different file endings
this is the hiajckthis log.
avg said it was in java\jre\1.5.0 and there are a couple of entries for that below
my msn isnt working anymore either.
i think this came in when i tried to download adobe premiere pro on bit torrent. since then i found adobe premier standard on my vaio which isnt working very well. does anyone know if standard comes free on the vaio or is that part of the trojan?

Hi thefuse,

I am sorry you had to wait. :( I would like to help you. Your HijackThis log is incomplete and not in its own folder. When you do so, either HJT will not create its log files and backup files; or if it does, you risk losing them when the TEMP's cache is cleared. It's important that you save these backup files, in case you have to "undo" [restore] some of the things you "FIX" incorrectly. So you need to move HJT into a separate, non-temporary directory of its own. We recommend using the directory C:\HJT , so that it will then appear in your log, under running processes, as C:\HJT\HiJackThis.exe. Please post a new complete HijackThis log after you've done that.

Hi thefuse,

It's complete and in the right directory now. Thank you. :D I'll start researching the items in your log. This may take a considerable time, so please be patient. I'll be back as soon as I am able.

Hi thefuse, :D

There is nothing serious in your log to suggest malware. A few good scans I am sure willl clean it up nicely. The only Adobe showing in the log is Adobe 5.0 which is a legitimate entry. You may have picked up something from Bittorent though. You can read more about it here. I see some entries in your trusted zone. Not that they are harmful, but it's best not to have anything in your trusted zone. It may be helpful to know that when you put an item in your Trusted Zone, it has pretty much full access to your computer... Are you sure you trust this site to that degree?? If you're not sure, and/or you do not need these in your trusted zone to facilitate access, or you did not knowingly permit this access yourself, then please fix them.
I've included them in the HijackThis fix below in violet print.

Please download the following programs but don't run them yet.

Ccleaner

o Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
o Select your language and click OK, then next.
o Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
o Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation. Do not run it yet

Ewido Security Suit

When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful") Do not run it yet.

Ad-Aware SE and install it. If you already have Ad-Aware SE, please configure it as indicated below. If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware, please uninstall your current version and install the newest version SE 1.06.

1) Run Ad-Aware, and click Check for updates now.

2) Select Configurations (click the Gear wheel at the top) as follows:

  • General Button > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
  • Tweak Button > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".

Click Proceed. Do not run it yet

Spybot S & D

In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.
Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to 'Search for Updates' then download and install the Updates.
Click on "immunize" button to complete the update. Do not run it yet.

======================

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

===================

Run CCleaner.
Before first use, check under Options, Settings, and ensure "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours" is unchecked.
Then open it and select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:

I recommend cleaning all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section
Clean all entries in the "System" section
Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.

In the Applications Tab:

Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

Then click the "Run Cleaner" button

====================

Run HijackThis. Close all other windows, except HijackThis. Put a checkmark next to the following entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.sony-europe.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.sonystyle-europe.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.vaio-link.com

Click the "Fix checked" button. Exit the HijackThis but stay in Safe mode.

=====================================

Run Ewido Security Suit

Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Settings, and under "What to scan?", select "Every file" then click ok.
Then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.

If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Reboot in Normal Mode to complete the scan and clear memory.

=====================================

Next run Adaware SE

To start the scan, Click > "Scan Now" at left

  • Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Select "Search for low-risk threats"
  • Select "Perform full system scan"
  • Click Next
4) When the scan has completed, select Next.

  • In the Scanning Results window, select the "Critical Objects" tab.
  • Right-click on the screen and choose "Select all objects"
  • Click Next to remove the infections found, and click OK to the prompt.
  • Restart the computer.

====================================

Finally run Spybot S & D

Next click the button 'Check for Problems'
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing RED entries, BLACK entries and GREEN entries in the window.
Make sure that there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
Choose Fix Selected Problems and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.

If it has trouble removing any spyware, you will get a message window, asking if it would be ok to run Spybot - S&D on the next reboot before any other applications start running. You should reply Yes to this. The next time you start Windows, Spybot will run automatically and fix any of the programs it could not fix previously.

At this point you will be presented with the list of found entries again, but now there will be large green checkmarks next to the items that Spybot - S&D was able to remove. The ones that are still checked but do not have the large green checkmark next to them will be fixed on the next reboot of windows.

====================================

Reboot and run an online scan at TrendMicro

Click on "Scan Now, it's free"
Choose Your Country and click on "Go"
Click on "Start Free Scan Now"

======================

Reboot one more time and run the HijackThis again. Post the new HijackThis log , the Ewido report and the online scan result.

Hi Thefuse, :)

Your log is looking much better. :thumbright: Ewido picked up some spyware and cleaned. It's unfortunate that the online scan didn't work. We need to do that to be sure that the computer is clean.
You can try Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Run HijackThis again and post a new log along with the Kaspersky online scan result. How is the computer running now?

sorry about not getting back to you.
my phone line has had so much crackling on it that i've been getting as little as 4kbps internet making it impossible to do an online scan.

Hi Thefuse, :D

Thanks for letting me know that you are having problems with the online scans. It's too bad that you cannot run an online scan because of your dial-up connection. :( Try running a full scan with your resident antivirus software, Awast, and see if it's picking up the Downloader.Generic which you mentioned in your first post. Let me know the result.

Hi Thefuse, :)

Thanks for trying and managing to run Trendmicro.
I managed to run housecall finally and it found a few malware files which i deleted befor eid managed to keep a log of it. i ran it again and it said it was clean. then i ran hijack this.
i didnt save it, sorry

Well, I am going to take your word for it and accept it as clean. Your log is clean. Now that you are clean, or seem to be, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure. You may already have some of them.

Disable and Enable System Restore If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to disable and re enable system restore here:
Windows XP System Restore Guide

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Keep your antivirus-program up-to-date and do regular scans with it. Please make sure that you have only one active antivirus program on your system.
If you haven't got a antivirus, you can download and install one of the following free ones:

AntiVir here
AVG Free here
Avast here

It is essential to keep the anti-virus program fully updated. New virus infections are being produced all the time, and unless the program downloads the latest 'definitions', it cannot protect you against the newer versions. If you want to check for updates manually I'd recommended doing so at least once a week. However, a better option is to set the program to download and install updates automatically every time you are connected to the Internet. The first time you use it, please set it to perform a full system scan.

Keep your pestware-scanners up-to-date and do regular scans with them.

To keep your computer free of Spyware, Adware, Hijackers etc., download and install the following free pestware-scanners (if you haven't installed them allready):
AdAware here
Spybot here Remember to "immunize" after each update
Microsoft Antispyware here

Install realtime pestware-scanners and keep them up-to-date.

The following free realtime pestscanners prevent a number of malware-variants from entering your computer, in the first place:

SpywareBlaster here Remember to "enable all protection" after each update.
SpywareGuard here

If you haven't got one, already, install a firewall and keep it up-to-date. Please make sure that you have only one active firewall on your system.

A firewall will prevent unauthorized contact between your computer and internet.
If there is no firewall installed on your computer, you can download and install one of the following free firewalls:
ZoneAlarm here
Sygate here
Kerio Personal Firewall (Will be discontinued as from the end of 2005) here
Outposthere
Important: (Windows XP only) If you install a firewall, be sure to turn off the WinXP-firewall!

Test your firewall here to make sure that it's working properly

Install these programs, to make surfing with Internet Explorer safer:

A popup-blocker, f.e. Google Toolbar here: A popup-blocker prevents popup-windows from opening, when you come along a websites that uses them, during internet-surfing.

IE-SPYAD here: This utility adds a long list of known bad sites to Internet Explorer's Restricted Sites zone. This prevents those sites from executing their malicious programs on your computer.

Install and use an alternative browser to surf on the internet.

Because Internet Explorer is the most-used browser on the planet, most of the hijackers, adware and spyware are made to abuse your computer thru Internet Explorer.
Here are some good alternative browsers:
Mozilla Suite here
Mozilla Firefox here
Opera here
Netscape here
Important: You can not uninstall Internet Explorer.
First of all, it's part of Windows and you'll need it to download and install Windows Updates.
Secondly, There are some sites that are only accessable with Internet Explorer, fe. most of the Online Malware-scanners.

But above all, keep all your software UP-TO-DATE at all time!!

Also, I would recommend reading the excellent advice by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place

Happy and safe surfing. ;)
