I'm not able to run too much on the internet before something grabs hold and the system freezes up. I can't run Outlook Express either.

Unread postby askey127 » November 28th, 2005, 9:02 pm

prestonrsm,

You may want to print this out or save it to a Notepad file on your desktop, as you will not have Internet access in Safe mode.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and install CCleaner from here.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run CCleaner.
( Do not use the Issues block )
Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Check everything Except Cookies, Autocomplete Form History, and the Advanced part of the Menu.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while.
When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.
------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run Ad-Aware SE Personal from here, if you don't already have it.
If you decide on the paid version, don't install the AdWatch feature.
Open adaware and Click the Check for updates now line on the main screen. Click the Connect button on the webupdate screen.
If an update is available download it and install it. Click the Finish button to go back to the main screen.
Click on the Settings button (the gear symbol in the upper part of screen) to open the General settings screen. Make sure the Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal setting is checked green and then click Proceed to save your changes.

Click the Scan now button in the main menu on the left side of the main status screen or use the Start button in lower right corner. This will open the "Preparing System Scan" screen. Please Deselect Search for negligible risk entries. Leave the Selection for low-risk threats unchecked also. Then select Use custom scanning options and click Customize. This will open the "Scan Settings" Page. Make sure all of the following are listed with a green checkmark:
* Scan within archives
Then click on the Tweak Button to open up the tweak settings.
Open up the "Scanning Engine" section and make sure all of the following are On with a green checkmark:
* Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
Make sure the following is unchecked with a red X:
* Unload recognized processes & modules during scan.
Open up the "Cleaning Engine" section and make sure all of the following are On with a green checkmark:
* Always try to unload modules before deletion
* During Removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
* Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot.
Click the Proceed button to save settings. Click Next to begin the scan. When the scan is completed, the "Performing System Scan" screen will change name to Scan Complete.
Click the Next button to get to the Scanning Results screens where more information about the objects detected during the scan is available. Click the Critical Objects Tab. In general all of the items listed will be bad. To fix all the bad critical objects, right click on one of them to open up the selection screen. Click the Select All button to select all entries. Then all are selected Click Next and then OK in the pop-up window to confirm the removal.
Run the scan, and then Reboot.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please download, install, and update the free trial version of Ewido trojan scanner: from here : http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
There is an unofficial set of instructions in pdf format here : http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Tutorials/ewidoQuickGuide.pdf
* Install ewido security suite
* When installing, under "Additional Options", Uncheck "Install background guard" and Uncheck "Install scan via context menu".
* Launch ewido, there should now be an icon on your desktop. Double-click it.
* The program will go to its main screen
* On the left hand side of the main screen click Update.
* Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can also use the same download link http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ to manually update ewido.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Start Your Computer in Safe Mode.
Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly as the machine boots, until a menu shows up. Choose Safe Mode from the list.
In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have Nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!.
It's extremely important not to open any windows while the scan is in progress.
Now Run Ewido
* Click on scanner
* Click on Settings
* Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
* Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
* Under "What to scan" select scan every file
* Click OK
* Click on Complete system scan
* Let the program scan the machine
* If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification.
* Let it fix whatever it finds
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
* Click Save report
* Save the report to your desktop
* Exit ewido
When you compose your reply, paste the contents of the report into it..
Reboot to Normal Mode
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://my.myway.com/

Make sure all other windows except HJT are closed, and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

We will be looking for the Ewido report, and a new HJT log.

prestonrsm,
You may want to print this out, or save it as a Notepad document on your Desktop, since you won't have Internet access in Safe Mode.
----------------------------------------------------------------
WeatherBug is a system tray icon that offers weather information and includes built-in ads. WeatherBug is controlled by AWS Convergence Technologies (weatherbugmedia.com).
There is some controversy over whether WeatherBug should be targeted by anti-parasite software. AWS strongly deny their software is 'spyware', and by the definition used here, it is not, as it does not leak information back to its controlling servers.
However, WeatherBug has in the past been silently installed by the FavoriteMan parasite and Freeze.com screensavers, and more recently has been bundled by software such as AIM and Blubster. This makes it 'unsolicited', and since it is installed to raise money for its creators through the built-in ads it is certainly 'commercial'. So it does meet the definition for 'parasite': unsolicited commercial software. It is nonetheless listed as a borderline case because it is not overtly harmful and many people do install it deliberately.
WeatherBug bundles the MySearch parasite in its standalone distribution and has in the past, installed Gator and SVAPlayer.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Wild Tangent is a video game software company specializing in online games. It has even made a partnership with AOL to include itself as part of the AOL Instant Messenger for their AIM games section. The WildTangent Web Driver is their technology that allows you to play 3D games over the Internet. Although it's not technically considered spyware, it does have built in components to update itself and gather information about the computer system including

1. Operating System Version
2. CPU Type and Speed
3. Memory Amount
Video Card type and Driver Version
4. Sound Card type and Driver Version
5. DirectX Version
Location that the Web Driver was installed from
6. It is also a MAJOR resource hog.
----------------------------------------------------------------

I will proceed as though you want to get rid of these things. Ignore the removal of anything you want to keep.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to Show All Files
Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. In addition, if you have Windows XP, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Weatherbug
WildTangent

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
This first one is a major resource hog, and doesn't seem to help performance.

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe (file missing) (HKCU)

Make sure all other windows except HJT are closed, and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Start Your Computer in Safe Mode.
Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly as the machine boots, until a menu shows up. Choose Safe Mode from the list. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Additional Info is here: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm
-----------------------------------------------------------
Folder Deletion.
In Windows Explorer, Find and Delete these folder(s), if present:
C:\Windows\WT\
C:\Program Files\WildTangent\
CX:\Program Files\AWS\
C:\Program Files\Weatherbug\
C:\Windows\Prefetch\contents
<=== delete all the files and folders in Prefetch, not the folder itself.
Note any folder you cannot delete.
You may have to delete all the underlying files and folders before a target folder can be deleted.
If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the filename is in there, click End Process, then retry delete.
Note the name and location of any file you cannot delete.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Tell me how it's behaving.

Status of my computer.

I'll have to let the machine run some more to see if the trojan horse pops up again.

However, when I try to reboot my machine, it takes a really long time, and when I type Ctr-Alt-Delete, nothing appears. For instance, the "Logging off..." part of reboot takes 1 minute 40 seconds.

Outlook Express does not connect to my mail server, still. I decided to download Mozilla Thunderbird, and it had the same problem. (I can go to the mail server, log in and view my files on the server itself).

Here is my hijack this log (pre-thunderbird)

prestonrsm,
I would suggest removing the active portion of Ewido to prevent any possible interference between it and Norton's. This could cause very slow start and shutdowns. You can still use Ewido as a very good scanner.

Then we can remove also some of the unnecessary startups.

If you don't have anything critical in your customized Yahoo IE page, you can use HJT to Fix Checked all the customized R1 entries. This will just start IE in Yahoo.com without any extras.
I would also consider getting rid of Musicmatch, Realplayer, and some update programs as automatic Startup entries.
They can be accessed under Programs or with desktop icons.

Instructions are here do all of the above. Utilize the ones you agree with.

First, please look at your HOSTS file to see whether there are any unexpected entries relating to sites you don't recognize, or to your e-mail server.
Open C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc\HOSTS with Notepad to look at it.
Don't try to edit it. Just let me know if you see anything questionable that isn't showing up in the HJT log.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Ewido
From the system tray, Right-click the system tray icon and Uncheck real time protection.
or From within Ewido -
Under 'Your security status', if the real time protection is active, deactivate it by clicking 'real time protection' until the status says 'inactive'.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/def ... earch.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/def ... .yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/def ... .yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/def ... earch.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/def ... .yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/def ... .yahoo.com
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MMTray] C:\Program Files\Musicmatch\Musicmatch Jukebox\mm_tray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmtask] C:\Program Files\Musicmatch\Musicmatch Jukebox\mmtask.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
O4 - Global Startup: Kodak software updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Kodak\KODAK Software Updater\7288971\Program\Kodak Software Updater.exe

Make sure all other windows except HJT are closed, and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Let me know what you decided and how it's working. You may have to re-edit the Outlook Express server information with the install wizard to get the e-mail back.
Don't know that the e-mail issue is malware related.

prestonrsm,

You have done a good job.
Your system looks to be free of malware.
If you have difficulty re-establishing your e-mail account, I would suggest looking at : http://www.pcpitstop.com/ (They specialize in helping with system issues), or contacting the tech help from your provider.

Good luck.

Thanks for the recommendation, but I was able to find it on my own.

I "turned down" the Norton Security's Firewall Feature to Low, and now I can send/receive e-mail.

Go figure.
