Laptop is very slow

I'm helping a friend. Her laptop (HP Compaq Presario CQ50, Vista Home Basic 32bit, 2 gig memory) is running very slow. I can access her pc remotely so I should be able to execute whatever you require. I have run CCleaner and no improvement. She does run AVG virus protection.
You folks helped me a few years ago so I am familiar with 'the drill'...
What next?

If that does not clear up her problems and your friend needs further help, she should register and post her HijackThis log in the Malware Removal room. If she is not comfortable with that, then she should take her computer in to a trusted local shop and have it checked for malware and/or other problems.
