I get "redirected" when click on a search link

Unread postby Kimo » August 5th, 2010, 11:38 pm

When I click on a search link I get "redirected" to something other than what I clicked on. In order to get to the desired link I have to copy and paste it.

Hello kimo and welcome to the forums :)

I am turtledove, and will be assisting you with your log.
If you still need assistance, please do the following:

*Print all instructions or Copy to Notepad for reference.
*Please note, unless I'm notified ahead of time, this topic will close if there is not a response in 3 Days.
*Place a link to this thread in your Favorites/Bookmarks for easily returning here.
*Please respond until I give the all clear, as absence of symptoms does NOT always mean Clean.
*Please do not run any other tools/scans unless requested* Do not install/uninstall anything unless requested
**Please be sure you have read Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules especially P2P Policy
*If you can do the above all should go well.
*If you do not understand a step, please STOP and ASK before proceeding*

**All fixes are for this computer and the current issues on it. Please Do Not use these instructions on another issue or computer.**

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Since it has been some time since your above post, please post the following logs. I will go over the new logs and return as soon as possible.

Next Step: Download and Run RSIT
  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

Thank you,

turtledove

Good Day Kimo,

Please print out instructions, or copy to notepad for easy reference.

You are low on RAM at the moment. How much do you you have installed? Eliminating what is below should improve this.
You are running conflicting Anti Virus and Anti Spyware programs. Lets take care of these and see if RAM usage improves.
**If you have ANY questions/problems, please STOP and ask before continuing.**

HijackThis

  • Start HijackThis and select Do a system scan only.

Multiple Anti-virus Programs
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti-virus programs running in memory at once:

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash. I advise removing AVG, keeping AVAST. See next step.

Note: Avast covers what Super Antispyware does, it also has a boot-safe feature that if used on an infected machine, could make your computer not boot up. I advise removing this, as you have Malwarebytes on your PC. We are also removing out of date Adobe and Java. We will update these later.

Uninstall Programs

Click Start, click Run...
Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter to open Add or Remove Programs
For each of the programs listed below, highlight them in the list and click Remove

Ad-Aware
Adobe Reader 7.0
AVG 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java(TM) 6 Update 15
SUPERAntiSpyware
Windows Defender

Once finished, close the Add or Remove Programs window

Check Windows Firewall
If you are not using a 3rd party firewall, I want to make sure that (at least) the Windows Firewall is active.
  1. Please press Start... then choose Run from the menu.
  2. In the Run, text entry box, please copy/paste the following:
    wscui.cpl
  3. Press the OK... button.
The Security Center window will open.
  4. If the Firewall information "bar" says it it On... then go to instruction step 8.
  5. Otherwise... in the "Manage security settings for:" section, click the "Windows Firewall" link.
In the "Windows Firewall" window... under the General tab.
  6. Check the radio button, marked "On (recommended)".
  7. Click the OK...button.
  8. Close the Security Center Window, using the X button at the top right of the window.

Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Double-click mbam Icon to open the program
  • Click the Update Tab, click Update.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected **One Exception: Important: **Remove Check-marks from any System Restore Points Selected**
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidentally close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Please be sure all other windows and programs are closed and work saved. This is in case MBAM needs to reboot as soon as scan is finished to complete removal of some files.

GMER
The downloaded file will have a random name... this prevents malware from detecting and blocking it.
Please download GMER... random file name.exe by GMER. An alternate (zip file) download site.
Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.
**Caution** Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
  1. Double click on the random named.exe to execute. If asked, allow the gmer.sys driver load.
  2. If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO <--- Important!
  3. On the right side panel, several boxes have been checked. Please UNCHECK the following: (see image below)
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All <-- don't miss this one

    Image

  4. If you don't get a warning then... Click the Rootkit/Malware tab at the top of the GMER window.
  5. Click the Scan button.
  6. Once the scan has finished... click Save. The Save... window will open.
  7. Save the scan results as gmerroot.log, save it to your Desktop.
  8. Double click on the desktop "gmerroot.log" file, to open in Notepad.
  9. Copy and paste the contents of the file gmerroot.log in your next reply.

RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
You should still have this program on your desktop. If so, just ignore the download instructions.
Please download RSIT by random/random... save it to your desktop.

In order for both info and log files to be produced again, I need you to delete the existing RSIT folder:
  1. C:\RSIT <-- delete this entire folder , then...
  2. Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  3. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
RSIT will start running. When done... 2 (Notepad) text files...will be produced.
The first one, "log.txt", <<will be maximized... the second one, "info.txt", <<will be minimized.
  4. Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(These logs can be lengthy, so post 1 log per reply please.)

Turdledove: I have completed everything you requested. The following are the two new RSIT logs. I will put the Malwarebytes log and GMER log in a reply after this one. The reason I had so many anti-virus was I was trying them all to see if they would get rid of my problem. Now I am down to Malwarebytes, Avast and SpyBot. I assume when we are finished I will delete HiJackthis also. Thank you for your assistance.

Good Day Kimo,

Please do the following, copy out the instructions for easier reference as well. We need to make a backup before I give my next set of instructions. This is important. Let me know if there are any problems in doing so.

Back Up registry with ERUNT

  • Please use the following link and download ERUNT to your desktop. HERE
  • Double Click on the erunt-setup.exe
  • Follow the prompts to install ERUNT
  • A set up window will pop up. It will ask: Create ERUNT entry in to the Start up folder, answer NO

    Image

  • Follow the prompts to Backup your registry to the default location

Note: To restore your registry (if needed), go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

Malwarebytes Information

Did you run a Scan with Malwarebytes prior to your posting to our forum? If so did it find/remove anything? To check:
Please open Malwarebytes
Click the Log Tab
Look for the most recent log dated before 8-11-2010, and close to your starting here or when problems began.
Please post the results of that log if anything was found and deleted.

Can you also tell me what sites you are getting redirected too? Any other odd behavior if any.

Post
Malwarebytes Information
Any problems making the ERUNT backup?
Sites redirected to, in all browsers used?
How the computer is now running

Thank you

No problems creating the ERUNT backup that I'm aware of anyway.

When I open IE to the msn.com web page after msn.com comes up a second page tries to open. Before I had always closed it before it had a change to open. This time I let it run and it tried to open the following page but got stalled and never did complete.

hXXp://113594url.cptgt.com/cpv.jsp?p=11 ... Id=7749364

Then I did a search from the msn.com web page for "truck headliners" and it redirected to the following page -

hXXp://www.infomash.org/100/7409/search ... 43eea378ee

This page had web sites listed for truck headliners. I clicked on one of them and it took me to the page I clicked on.

Then I did a search from msn.com for "Herculiner" and it tried to open the following page but stalled and did not complete -

hXXp://www.tazinga.com/local_g/results/ ... 6c5ce15eca

So, in summary when I open my home page msn.com, msn opens and then a second window tries to open in addition to the msn window. When I do a search and click on one of the search result links it redirects me some other page - not always the same one.
Other than that my computer runs fine, maybe a little slow. A couple of times lately a window would be opening slow and a pop-up would appear and say that a script was running and causing the computer to load slow. Did I want to stop the script? I clicked yes.

Hope I have given you the info you need. Thanks again for your assistance.

Good Day Kimo,

Thank you for the information, and you're most welcome. :)

Please copy these instructions as you will be off the internet for a part of the following.

Download and Run ComboFix

  • Please download ComboFix from one of the following links.

    Link 1.

    Link 2.

**IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop**
  • Please disable any Antivirus or Firewall you have active, as shown in this topic. Please close all open application windows.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
Image
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Turdledove:
Thanks for your reply. I started doing your instructions but I am running out of time and I have to go out-of-town first thing in the morning. I should be back Monday and will get back on this Monday or Tuesday night.

I clicked on Link1 and started downloading ComboFix.exe then the screen went all blue with the following message:

A problem has been detected and Windows shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop Error screen restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps.
Check for adequate disk space. If a driver is ID'ed in stop message disable the diriver or check for updates.
Check with hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable compoents, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced staartup options, and then select safe mode.
Techinal information
***Stop: 0x0000008E(0x0000046, 0x805150BB,0xF7A916AC, 0x00000000)

So I restarted the computer and it booted up OK. I started downloading ComboFix again and it gave me the message that I would have to disable Avast.

So I stopped there and will get back on this Monday or Tuesday evening at the latest. Sorry for the delay and thank you.

Good Day Kimo,

Thank you for letting me know. I shall look for you by Tuesday, unless you let me know otherwise.

Yes, to run Combofix you will need to disable Avast; this prevents interference and possible conflict. Just restart Avast once Combofix has completed and before connecting back to the internet.

Hope your trip goes well.
:)
