UniBlue registry checker (maybe not surprisingly told me there was some fixing to do)

We do not recommend the use of Registry Cleaners.
Most reg cleaners aren't "bad" as such, but they aren't perfect and even the best have been known to cause problems.
The point we are trying to make is that the risk of using one far outweighs any benefit.
If it does work perfectly you will not see any difference
If it doesn't work properly you may end up with an expensive doorstop.

Your Uninstall list was cut in half please post a complete one on your next reply.

Is it time to celebrate yet?

A couple more jobs to do.

ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: Image
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

I've included:
(full) uninstall list
new HJT log
but will have to rerun the ESET log o/night (scan was successful, no threats found - but I couldn't find how to generate a logfile and assumed I would get a prompt when finished). I'll rerun and post ESET in the morning - apols for the incomplete post.

Noticed on the earlier Combofix log the following:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{c8c40012-8a09-11df-80d8-000fb0f2e836}]
\shell\AutoRun\command - stara\\bagra.exe
\shell\explore\command - stara\bagra.exe
\shell\install\command - stara\bagra.exe
\shell\open\command - stara\bagra.exe

stara\bagra.exe is a Trojan emanating which I found when making txt transfers from the infected machine to my PC on a pen-drive. Fortunately my AVG picked it up and allowed me to remove it and prevent transfection. Couldn't detect it on the lapto though inits compromised state.

Noticed on the earlier Combofix log the following:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{c8c40012-8a09-11df-80d8-000fb0f2e836}]
\shell\AutoRun\command - stara\\bagra.exe
\shell\explore\command - stara\bagra.exe
\shell\install\command - stara\bagra.exe
\shell\open\command - stara\bagra.exe

Yes we will be removing this, I was waiting for the ESET results, as if anything was found we could remove it all in one go.

COMBOFIX-Script
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code: Select all
     DDS::
    uLocal Page = \blank.htm

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{c8c40012-8a09-11df-80d8-000fb0f2e836}]

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    Image
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Next Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:
1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
Please note the following if you decide on Antivir Personal Edition
Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus is only available for single computer use for home and non commercial use.

2) avast! 4.8 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) Microsoft Security Essentials - New, from Microsoft, with email scanning, easy to install, easy to use.
** Your PC must run genuine Windows to install Microsoft Security Essentials.

HJT logfile attached (now after installing the antivirus....). Antivirus scans successfully is operating as real-time protection and indicates a clean PC bill of health after a scan.

Two minor observations:
Annoying pop-up at start-up keeps telling me that Norton antiworm is turned off .
'Synaptics pointing device' no longer operates (cursor is frozen, and operates only briefly during Windows start-up). Fortunately a USB mouse gives back cursor control. I don't think this was related to any disruptive acivity eg Combofix run or download - it just 'died' whilst I had Spotify running when checking out various programmes.

Might be a good idea to run the Norton Removal Tool That should clean up the “pop up”.

Did you reboot when the 'Synaptics pointing device' stopped. If so did that fix the problem.

Remove Norton

Note : You should first attempt to remove your Norton product using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel (Programs and Features, in Windows Vista). This is the best method. After uninstalling using Windows Add/Remove Programs, run the Norton Removal Tool to ensure successful removal of all Norton references.

Please go to this -page- and select the product you have

1 Download the Norton Removal Tool.
Save the file to the Windows desktop.
2 On the Windows desktop, double-click the Norton Removal Tool icon.
    3 Follow the on-screen instructions.
Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

Once selected close all windows except HJT an click on Fix Checked

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 21.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Scroll down to where it says "JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the orange Download JRE button to the right
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation & save the file to your desktop
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE) listed below in the code box.
    Code: Select all
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    Java(TM) 6 Update 17
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 6
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
        Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Response to Instructions

Remove Norton
worked a treat - including the removal of Symantec KB-DocID:2003093015493306 on previous uninstall lists - thanks ;)

Hijack This System Scan and selective removal of:
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file
)
you correctly assumed these were present, and both were removed by the HJT routine

Update Java Runtime
done - no problems.

Update Adobe Reader
done - no problems with install except I inadvertently left Google toolbar checked and so had to uninstall this afterwards.
I didn't find any previous versions of Adobe to uninstall (specifically Adobe 7.0.9) so assume this was taken out in the routine.

Update on Issues
the synaptic pointer still does not work - despite reboots. I've set the Synaptic control options back to factory defaults, but this hasn't done anything either.
an issue which I hadn't referred to (temporary loss of some shortcuts from eg taskbar and start-up menus) has rectified itself.
new issue - message balloon at start-up indicates that Windows Firewall is not operating. But I think it is (ie set to on in the Control Panel). Maybe it's a start-up timing issue? (As I can't access Windows Firewall in the Control Panel until start-up processes have slowed down).

I haven't identified any other issues with this laptop, but will continue to test things in my spare time. Must be nearly there now!

Further Questions

Antivir message on laptop at startup states I am set up as administrator, and for security purposes would be best to change this. What's your view?

I noticed other instructions on this forum regarding computer vulnerabilities from earlier versions of Java and Adobe. Do you recommend using your clearly stated routines (above) for other computers - specifically for the removal of earlier versions of Java and Adobe?

I kept the Adobe® Photoshop® Album Starter Edition 3.0 to cater for mobile phone images - would you advise against this by replacing with something more suitable (given security issues referred to above)?

Related Issue?

I'm making this query in an ancillary post under the same thread - in case you wished me to treat as a separate issue under a new thread.

Recall I could only operate the infected laptop in safe mode at the outset.
Logfiles were transferred to my PC (in order to interact with this site) through use of a pen-drive.
I typically scanned the pen-drive before use with one or other of my malware identification programmes (mwam, AVG9, adaware etc).
In this process I recognised and killed the stara/bagra.exe Trojan on the pen-drive using AVG9 (which we subsequently found on the infected laptop).
However, I may not have recognised and killed everything - but am not completely sure.......

A scheduled AVG scan identified 2 infections last Sunday. One was removed or healed, the other was not removed or healed.

From the AVG results overview on 11-7-10
"C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe (2412):\memory_0d170000";"May be infected by unknown virus Win32/DH.CAFF82037F";"Object is inaccessible."
"C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe (2412)";"May be infected by unknown virus Win32/DH.CAFF82037F";""

A scheduled AVG9 scan (16-7-10) gave a clean bill of health.

Is my PC still clean, or do I need to do some further checks?
FYI - I'm a fairly cautious PC user and don't knowingly take any risks - preferring only to use reputable sites for downloads etc and have modest security systems as backstop. To my knowledge, I have only come under attack from viruses just the once (Xmas eve 2009!) and mbam seemed to identify, isolate and quarantine successfully.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

the synaptic pointer still does not work - despite reboots.

The Touch pad switch may be turned off have you checked that?

new issue - message balloon at start-up indicates that Windows Firewall is not operating. But I think it is (ie set to on in the Control Panel). Maybe it's a start-up timing issue? (As I can't access Windows Firewall in the Control Panel until start-up processes have slowed down).

Once the computer is on properly, check the settings, let me know what it is set too. The windows firewall could well have been off as the Symantec one had been onboard.

I haven't identified any other issues with this laptop, but will continue to test things in my spare time. Must be nearly there now!

Sounds good to me :)

Antivir message on laptop at startup states I am set up as administrator, and for security purposes would be best to change this. What's your view?

Hmm I have not seen this message on mine, what options is it giving you?

I noticed other instructions on this forum regarding computer vulnerabilities from earlier versions of Java and Adobe. Do you recommend using your clearly stated routines (above) for other computers - specifically for the removal of earlier versions of Java and Adobe?

Yes
I kept the Adobe® Photoshop® Album Starter Edition 3.0

That is fine.

As for your PC, I would say all is fine from what we have done, run Malwarebytes and let me know if it finds anything.

Also let me know how you get on with the touch pad and firewall issue before we clean up.

Avira pop-up gives red Warning - You have Adminstrator rights.
It is recommended that you work only with a restricted user account.
For further information see:
http://support.microsoft.com
No other options available - there is only a check box to prevent the message displaying again.

The Touch pad switch may be turned off have you checked that?

I can't find a radio button or somilar to enable/disable the touch pad. I'll keep looking.
Under Mouse Properties, then Device Settings, there is an enable / disable routine using Apply then OK, but have gone through this without change to the current status quo. Under Hardware, the Synaptics Device properties indicates it is plugges into a PS/2 mouse port and is working properly. Maybe the driver needs reloading??

Once the computer is on properly, check the settings, let me know what it is set too. The windows firewall could well have been off as the Symantec one had been onboard.

On settings, Firewall is set to On (recommended). Don't allow exceptions is unchecked. However, at start-up I get the ballon saying Your computer may be at risk, Windows Firewall is turned off. After a while this goes and the Security Alert tray icon disappears.

As for your PC, run Malwarebytes and let me know if it finds anything.

A full scan on 16-7-10 gave no signs of a problem:

No other options available - there is only a check box to prevent the message displaying again.

If you are happy with the account setup, just check the box.
Maybe the driver needs reloading??

That could be the case, there is a keyboard shortcut to activate or deactivate the touchpad. Fn + F7. In the Mouse devices page you could also try the reset devices. Check the driver in device manager also.

After a while this goes and the Security Alert tray icon disappears.

Ah it sounds like it is just a bit slow, but is working once the computer is fully started. Maybe after we stop some of the other un needed start ups it will be speedier.
See if you are able to remove Search Settings through add/remove programs.

This next step is your choice. The below items I am getting you to fix with HJT are for programs that do not need to start up when you turn your computer on. Doing the below step WILL NOT UNINSTALL these programs ONLY stop them from running at startup. All will be available when you need them. The bonus is it will make your startup time a bit shorter

Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IMJPMIG8.1] "C:\WINDOWS\IME\imjp8_1\IMJPMIG.EXE" /Spoil /RemAdvDef /Migration32

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hpqSRMon] C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqSRMon.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"

    O4 - Global Startup: HP Digital Imaging Monitor.lnk = C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe

Once selected close all windows except HJT an click on Fix Checked then REBOOT.

Post back with an update on the issues.

In the absence of any expert advice I would have just checked the box - I just thought it a strange prompt esp as it was a 'red warning sign'.

there is a keyboard shortcut to activate or deactivate the touchpad. Fn + F7. In the Mouse devices page you could also try the reset devices.

(insert smiley thing with large amount of egg on face) - I'm soooo sorry to have wasted your time on this one. I previously said it wasn't my laptop and yes you are spot on, there is a keyboard toggle for the touchpad. Even though I had the physical laptop, I still hadn't found the solution.......

See if you are able to remove Search Settings through add/remove programs.

Was able to do this (is this an enabler for the Start menu computer/internet search?? And would it be a good idea to disable it at start-up on other computers?)

it sounds like it is just a bit slow, but is working once the computer is fully started. Maybe after we stop some of the other un needed start ups it will be speedier.

No, the issue doesn't go away, but clearly there is improvement in the start-up speed This is the sequence of events:
Security alert balloon comes on to say computer may be at risk.

Clicking on balloon enters Security Centre where Firewall is Off (red) and Auyo Updates and Virus Protection are On.

Clicking on Recommendations on Firewall takes to SC window with an Enable Now button.

Clicking on Enable Now gives a security centre window saying:

"We're sorry, the Security Centre could not run on Windows Firewall. To turn on the firewall yourself, go to Windows Firewall in Control Panel. In the Windows Firewall dialog General tab, select On (recommended), and then click ok"

The Windows Firewall radio button is set to On (Recommended) however. Waiting a few seconds and the system seems to restore it self and Security Centre Firewall turns On (green). Hence my first coments on this issue:
new issue - message balloon at start-up indicates that Windows Firewall is not operating. But I think it is (ie set to on in the Control Panel)

I can't recall now whether this phenomenon appeared only after Avira was installed, or if it was one of the many several balloons / issues before the routines began to simplify things. If I had to guess(!) I'd say it appeared after Avira installation.

Post back with an update on the issues
.

Despite my best efforts, I can't find anything else........... :)

Check the Avira Control Panel - General - Warnings - Registration with Administrator rights:

that you are logged on with administrator rights

If this option is enabled, when you log on to your computer, you will receive an alert if your user account includes administrator rights. For security reasons, it is recommended that you work with restricted user rights. By restricting the user rights with which you work on your computer, you prevent the automatic installation of unwanted programs and the unauthorized changing of system settings.
