Hi tahoeles.

Well done, I think we could be almost there, with just a little way to go.

First Off re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_enable which will appear on your desktop.
Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

You have a few sites, in the Trusted Zones of which you may have put them there. Trusted Zones allow the sites to run with reduced security settings.
This will provide an opportunity for exploit from malware and you will never know when a good site will get hacked.
It is advisable for you not to place any more websites in the Trusted Zones in the future, and I will remove the existing ones as below.

  • Download: DelDomains.inf
  • Locate DelDomains.inf
  • Right-click and select Install
  • This will remove all entries in the Trusted, Restricted, and Enhanced Security Configuration Zones.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) .
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment JRE 6 Update 20 allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.

Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner)

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

Please note there will be only one log this time.

  • RUN random's system information tool by doulbe clicking on (RSIT)on your desktop
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, one log will open.
  • Please post the contents into next reply

Postback in this order Please

Your all clean now, and good to go, but first we need to remove the tools we have used.
Also adding some extra protection will help secure your system against any future infections..

First Delete RegQuery from your Desktop.

Uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click on Start >> Run...
  • Now type in ComboFix /Uninstall into the and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.
  • Image

Please download OTC and save it to desktop.

This tool will remove all the tools(and logs created) we used to clean your pc. Any left over merely delete yourself and empty the Recycle Bin.

  • Double-click OTC.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

There is no harm in keeping HijackThis v2.0.4 installed, but if used incorrectly it could fry your system, I advise you to
go to add and remove programs and uninstall it, you can always download again if needed.

Keep Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware updated and run weekly scans, I would also keep Temp File Cleaner and run weekly to keep your system free of clutter.

ERUNT is a registry backup program, so you can keep it and use, if you like, it good for backing up of the registry before
making any major changes to your system

Extra Protection and Advice

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

(P2P) peer-to-peer or file sharing programs are a security risk which can make your system susceptible to malware infections:
Remote attacks, exposure of personal information, identity theft, fraud, and phishing. Many malicious worms and Trojans target P2P files sharing networks.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities, to check for other vulnerable programs running on your PC that are in need of an update,
you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Please post back and let me know all is ok

Hope the above information helps, and safe surfing.

Can you tell me what program was causing all of the trouble? Was this an established piece of Malware or something you and your peers haddn't seen

Your computer was infected with a ROOTKIT. In particular, the TDL3/TDSS rootkit, also known as Win32/Alureon.
A rootkit is a set of software tools intended for concealing running processes, files or system data from the operating system. Sadly it is getting very common.
While we are on this subject if you used you system for any online banking etc I would go online and change all your passwords now, and call any company's involved and check all is OK.
not trying to panic you but's it better to be safe than sorry, IF you never, then theres nothing to worry about.

You mentioned it was a good idea to run ERUNT periodically, what about its companion program NTREGOPT?

Use ERUNT to back up your registry before making any system changes, if things were to go wrong you have a back up of your registry to fall back on.
NTREGOPT is a Registry optimizer, I would leave along, I have never found a use for it.

Please post back so we can archive this topic again, unless you have any more questions

DFW, thanks for the feedback. I seem to be running fine thanks to your help. GMER would never run correctly on my system. Should I be concerned about this? Should I do anything?

The donation tab above takes you to PayPal. It does not say where or to whom the donation is sent to. I cannot find anywhere on the page to refference you. I want you to get the credit you deserve for your efforts. Since emailing you directly is not an option, how do I give you proper credit?

Thanks again.

You will be fine now, GMER did give us some information, which you posted direct, Gmer has now been deleted now as it has done it's job, there is nothing to be concerned about.

Nice working with you
