Can malware/virus disable a laptops screen?

Unread postby live4the1 » January 8th, 2010, 9:14 pm

I am working on a friends HP laptop. The display is not working at all. He said that it started after installing some software from the net that was suppose to be some type of PC maintanance software. I have ran Malwarebytes and it found a number of issues. Two of the major issues was a rogue errorrepairtool and the vundo trojan. The only issue at this time that I see with this machine is the display does not work. If you plug in an external display using either the s-video or VGA port the external will work. I can not even find the laptop display listed in the device manager or the Nvidia control panel. I have seen viruses and malware do some wierd things but this is new to me.
The computer is running Vista 64 and is a HP DV9920us.
Any help would be appreciated.

Normally, as you have not provided one, we would ask you to post a HijackThis log and an Uninstall List. However, I see from your post that the subject computer is using a 64 bit operating system. Unfortunately, the tools we use to analyze and remove infections do not work properly on a 64 bit operating system, and their results cannot be relied upon. Because of this, it is almost impossible for us to correctly diagnose problems, and the fixes we might offer could potentially do as much damage to the computer as any infection it might have.

Due to the above stated reasons, we do not at this time offer support for 64 bit operating systems. We are sorry that we are currently unable to assist you.
