Hi Fable,

Could you please tell me the symptoms that lead you to believe that you have a keylogger installed?

CKScanner:

  • Please download CKScanner from here to your Desktop.
Make sure that CKScanner.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application!
  • Double-click on CKScanner.exe and click Search For Files.
  • After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
  • A message box will verify the file saved
  • Double-click on the CKFiles.txt icon on your Desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Please post the GMER log and CKFiles.txt in your next reply along with the reasons why you suspect a keylogger to be installed.

Re: keylogger

Unread postby Fable » January 9th, 2010, 9:16 am

Here is my CKScanner log:

CKScanner - Additional Security Risks - These are not necessarily bad
c:\program files\adobe\adobe after effects cs4\support files\presets\image - special effects\cracked tiles.ffx
scanner sequence 3.AP.11
----- EOF -----

As for the GMER Rootkit scanner, i left it on for 3 hours and then noticed that it was scanning over one set of program files continously, so i turned it off. I will try the scanner again today. But i did notice a red result in the scanner, not sure what it means though.

The reason i believe i have a keylogger is due to the fact that i opened a file of a forum. When i opened the file a black screen in a window appeared. Other people on the forum then started saying that it was most likely a keylogger. Apart from that, i believe i also have some malware on my computer, because my antivirus (McAfee) keeps giving me a message saying 'your computer is not protected' and it seems that my spyware protection, system guard, email and spam protection keep disabling by themselves.

Hi Fable,

Please try the GMER scan again, close all open windows before running the scan.

If the scan does not complete the please scan with RootRepeal using the following instructions.

RootRepeal - Rootkit Detector

  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.
  • Unzip it to your Desktop
  • Double click RootRepeal.exe to start the program
  • Click on the Report tab at the bottom of the program window
  • Click the Scan button
  • In the Select Scan dialog, check:
    • Drivers
    • Files
    • Processes
    • SSDT
    • Stealth Objects
    • Hidden Services
    • Shadow SSDT
  • Click the OK button
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and Click OK to start the scan

The scan can take some time. DO NOT run any other programs while the scan is running
  • When the scan is complete, the Save Report button will become available
  • Click this and save the report to your Desktop as RootRepeal.txt
  • Go to File, then Exit to close the program

Please post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Hi Fable,

We need to try the GMER scan again to find the red result that you mentioned. The scan may complete in SAFE MODE.

If possible please print these instructions.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
If this does not work then try again but press the F12 key.

Now please run the GMER scan by clicking the icon on the desktop that you previously downloaded.

Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Please post the GMER log in your next reply.

hey deltalima,

I ran the GMER scanner is safemode, but just when it finished, the program froze. Also there was no copy option on the screen, so ill just write out what it said.

Type Name Value

AttachedD.. \Driver\kbdclass\Device\KeyboardClass0 SynTP.sys (Synaptics Touchpad Driver/synaptics...
AttachedD.. \Driver\kbdclass\Device\KeyboardClass1 SynTP.sys (Synaptics Touchpad Driver/synaptics...
Device \FileSystem\Fastfat\Fat F6AZDDZ0

Sorry for the limited info, but that was all i could see before the screen froze.

The strange thing is, when i ran this scan last time (not in safe mode) a lot more results were on screen including some svchosts.exe i think

Also the red result didnt appear, if i remember correctly, the red result was something like:

C:Documents and settings (***hidden***).....

Hi Fable,

We need to try to complete a GMER scan. We will disable all resident protection and then try a scan with some of the options deselcted. We will remove Spybot - Search & Destroy and can reinstall it later if required.

Please boot into normal mode.

  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs,
highlight Spybot - Search & Destroy
    click Remove
(select the option to remove all settings if prompted)
  • Close the Add or Remove Programsand the Control Panel windows.

We need to disable McAfee Security Center
Note: Please disconnect from the Internet when your security softwares are disabled or not active.
  • Open McAfee Security Center.
  • Click on Home on the left pane.
  • Beside Computer & Files, click on the arrow button.
  • Next, click on the arrow button beside Configure at the middle right (NOT the bottom one).
  • You will come to a new page. Please check (click) Off for all the protections. Remember to scroll down.
  • You will be prompted, select Never and just click OK.
  • Note: Don't forget to re-enable it after the fix.

Here is an illustration to assist you:
Image

Disable SUPERAntiSpyware
Programs like SUPERAntiSpyware, may interfere with the fix, so we need to temporarily disable it.
  • Right-click on the SUPERAntiSpyware icon, in the system tray.
  • Choose View Control Center... "Preferences/options" button/tab.
  • On the General and Startup...tab, uncheck, "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts"
  • click Close to exit.
Don't forget to enable your SUPERAntiSpyware protection, when your computer is clean.

Now please run GMER again and ensure the only drive selected is drive C:

On the right hand side ensure all the boxes EXCEPT Devices, Services and Show all

Now please run the scan and if successful post the log back here.

hey deltalima,

I tried the GMER scanner twice today, but both times, when the scan finished, the window froze and became unresponsive. Ill try again but it seems to take 3 hours to complete. Could i be doing something wrong for it to keep freezing?

Hi Fable,

You are not doing anything wrong, we are potentially dealing with very devious infections and so the tools we use need to dig deep into the operating system and can sometimes behave like this.

We will try a different route now.

RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
Please download RSIT by random/random... save it to your desktop.
  1. Double click on RSIT.exe to run it... read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  2. RSIT will start running. When done... 2 logs files...will be produced.
The first one, "log.txt", <<will be maximized... the second one, "info.txt", <<will be minimized.
  3. Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.

Download Blacklight from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/en_EMEA/security/security-lab/tools-and-services/blacklight/index.html
or
Link to it from the ftp site: ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe

Please save it to your desktop.

Go to Start-->Run, copy in the following text, and press Enter:
"%userprofile%\desktop\fsbl.exe" /expert

Accept the license agreement.
Click > scan, wait for it to finish, then click Close

There will be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
Copy and paste the contents of this log into your next reply.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with the two logs from the RSIT scan and the log from the Blacklight scan

hey deltalima,

i only got a log.txt file, not an info.txt. Also should i run it for files created in the last 3 months instead of one? Since i think i got the keylogger in early November.
