HiJack This Log with MAJOR problems

Unread postby Tanker350 » October 27th, 2005, 3:09 pm

I have almost 12,000 files (6.5GB) of Junk that isn't mine or that I ok'd to be installed on my Computer. When I do a scan for Spyware/Adware/Trojans, it shows they are in "My Documents" folder. But when I go to "My Documents" folder they are not there.

Here is my HiJack This scan. Thank you.

Tanker350,

You may want to print this out, since you will be in Safe Mode with no Internet access some of the time.
If anything fails, note it for me in your next reply, and continue with the next item in the sequence.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and install CCleaner from here.
Don't run CCleaner yet.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel
From Start,Settings,Control Panel or Start,Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight the following entry, if it exists, and choose Remove :
XLR8 <== it may appear as a very similar name instead, or it may be missing
Take extra care in answering any questions posed by the uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into choosing to keep the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Copy the following code into a Notepad document:
@echo off
sc stop XFACTORAE1
sc delete XFACTORAE1
sc stop XLR8
sc delete XLR8
sc stop XLR8PEER1
sc delete XLR8PEER1

Save to your Desktop As Type All Files and name it Fixsvc.bat
Do not save it as a type .txt or it won't work.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Start Your Computer in Safe Mode.
Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly as the machine boots, until a menu shows up. Choose Safe Mode from the list. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Now double-click the file Fixsvc.bat you saved to your desktop
A DOS window may open, then close.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Folder Deletion.
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), Find and Delete this folder, if present:
C:\Program Files\XLR8\
Note if you find but cannot delete.
You may have to delete all the underlying files and folders before a target folder can be deleted.
If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
Note the name and location of any file you cannot delete.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Reboot your computer into Normal Mode.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run CCleaner.
( Do not use the Issues block )
Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Check everything Except Cookies, Autocomplete Form History, and the Advanced part of the Menu.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while.
When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Tell me how its going.

Tanker350,

You may wish to print this out or save it as a Notepad file to your desktop, as you won't have internet access in Safe Mode.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I see you have been running Limewire. If it is a new download from the original source, you can choose to keep it.
If it is not new, you should remove it using Add/Remove from the Control Panel.
Please note that as long as you're using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur.
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation. Additional information on the safety of Peer to Peer Networks is here : http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ -(from NonSuch)
In any case, I would prefer that you not use any Peer to Peer file sharing while we are trying to fix your computer
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to Show All Files
Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. In addition, if you have Windows XP, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Using Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS\nvsvc.exe
Right click it in the list, choose properties, and note the vendor, version, and anything else listed about it to paste into your next reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please update the Ewido trojan scanner: from here : http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
It appears you may have Ewido installed already. If so, try to perform the update:
There is an unofficial set of instructions in pdf format here : http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Tutorials/ewidoQuickGuide.pdf
* Install ewido security suite
* When installing, under "Additional Options", Uncheck "Install background guard" and Uncheck "Install scan via context menu".
* Launch ewido, there should now be an icon on your desktop. Double-click it.
* The program will go to its main screen
* On the left hand side of the main screen click Update.
* Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can also use the same download link http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ to manually update ewido.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have Nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!.
It's extremely important not to open any windows while the scan is in progress.
Now Run Ewido
* Click on scanner
* Click on Settings
* Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
* Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
* Under "What to scan" select scan every file
* Click OK
* Click on Complete system scan
* Let the program scan the machine
* If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification.
* Let it fix whatever it finds
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
* Click Save report
* Save the report to your desktop
* Exit ewido
When you compose your reply, paste the contents of the report into it..
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply, along with the Ewido report and notes on the nvsvc.exe file properties .

Thanks for the help. I haven't started the 2nd part of your instructions yet. The biggest PROBLEM I have. I don't know exactly what its called due to the high volume of Malware/Spyware/Trojans being made each day. Somehow a large file (12,000 files and 6.1GB) has shown up in "My Documents" folder when I run a scan with Ewido or TrendMicro's Housecall. But when I do a search for the folders/files of where the 12,000 items are, they don't show up. I know they are items that are not mine b/c they are all Pornographic items that I know I never ok'd to come through the firewall.

Tanker350,

After further analyzing your log and your description, the PC likely has a very serious infection called a rootkit.
...and has likely been pressed into service as a "zombie", working as a server for someone else.

With rootkits, there is no certainty, or even reasonable assurance that it can be cleaned at all.

Expert opinion says the only real way to be certain to fix this is :
take the machine offline, back up all your data, get your install CD, Reformat, and then re-install the OS.

The decision as to whether to do this is up to you.
If you decide to try and clean it, the machine should be disconnected from the Internet immediately, and any transactions regarding "fixes" for cleaning should be handled through a separate internet PC.
It may be possible to clean it, but the risk is high. We don't know whether we can detect the rootkit, or identify all the files, or correct it completely without trashing the system.

No matter what you decide, you should take the machine offline and back up all your data now.

Let me know.

Hello Tanker350,

As askey127 has pointed out to you:

The infection you have can and is very bad. Here is some information you need to know about it.

It's called a W32/Rbot-GR, which is referred to as a Rookit.

Virus information
W32/Rbot-GR
Summary

Summary Description Recovery Advanced
Profile
Name W32/Rbot-GR
Type Spyware Worm

How it spreads Network shares

Affected operating systems Windows

Side effects Allows others to access the computer
Steals information
Uses its own emailing engine
Reduces system security
Records keystrokes
Installs itself in the Registry

Aliases Backdoor.Rbot.gen
W32/Sdbot.worm.gen.g
W32.Spybot.Worm

The first thing I suggest you do is remove your connection from the internet.

Next: If you do any financial transactions online I would contact everyone you have done any business online with. Contact everyone that is in your email address book. If it were me, I'd even contact the police.

The only way to to be sure to get rid of this on this computer is to reformat the hard drive and start over. We can try to clean it but there can be no way of knowning if it's clean.

Let me know what you want to do.

Sorry its been a few days since I last posted. I have a BIG PERSONAL Battle going on, plus this Rootkit, and school. During my 2nd set of Instructions, I found where the large file was that contained the 5.9GB of Porno Files that weren't mine. I deleted the file, knowing that it wasn't going to do much other then delete the file that I saw.

Image

After I deleted the Large file above, I then ran an Ewido scan and this is the log. As you can see it has the RootKit at the Top:

---------------------------------------------------------
ewido security suite - Scan report

Next you wanted me to go into [/img]c:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS\nvsvc.exe

Please download hoster from the link below.

http://www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip

Unzip Hoster.zip
Open Hoster.exe.

Then click on "Restore Original Hosts"

Close program when complete.

Empty Recycle Bin

Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

At the taskbar, click Start|Run. Type 'Regedit' and press Return. The registry editor opens.
Before you edit the registry, you should make a backup. On the 'Registry' menu, click 'Export Registry File'. In the 'Export range' panel, click 'All', then save your registry as Backup.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\
Generic Service Process = nvsvc.exe

Right Click and delete them if they exist.
Close the registry editor.

Open c:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS\nvsvc.exe <--Delete this file.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
