Please help: PC extreamly slow

Unread postby mike73 » December 27th, 2009, 5:27 pm

Hello experts,

Any application that I start in my WinXP/32 bit PC, I get the following message:

"The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\puzesale.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

I also get several of these messages while restarting the machine. If I OK this message everything is OK. But, my system is very slow, no matter what I do.

I used to have Commodo (Free version; total potection) untill recently (after seeing this problem) I uninstalled and installed the full paid version of Kaspersky. It found and deleted serverla rojans etc., but this problem is still there.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.
Hi mike73 and welcome to Malware Removal. :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Next:

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

DAEMON Tools
Pop-Up Stopper Free Edition <-- No need for this since IE8 has a inbuilt pop-up blocker.
WebSearch Tools
WinTools Easy Installer
WinTools for Internet Explorer

To do so, click once on each of the above in turn to highlight and then click on the Remove button.

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • Click the Start button in the bottom left of TFC
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It should not take longer than a couple of minutes , and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and select then follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.

The log can also be found here:

  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is your computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log.
  • A new HijackThis Log.

Hi Dakeyras,

Thank you for the detailed steps. I really appreciate it.

1. I was able to remove 4 of the 5 applictions that you asked me to remove. I am unable to remove "WinTools for Internet Explorer" application due to the following "RUNDLL" op-up:

--------------
"Error loading C:\PROGRA~1\common~1\BTLINK\btlink.dll
The specified module could not be found."
--------------

2. TFC ran fine and cleaned a total of 6160MB. Rebotted fine after the TFC run.

3. Malwarebytes anti-malware ran an found several infections. Please find bleow the log file...

Hi. :)

Thank you for the detailed steps. I really appreciate it.
You are most welcome!

1. I was able to remove 4 of the 5 applictions that you asked me to remove. I am unable to remove "WinTools for Internet Explorer" application due to the following "RUNDLL" op-up:
OK and not a problem we can address this in due course.

It is defintiely performing much better now. I no longer get the following error!! web pages are not timingout and loads fine now.
Good to know.

Please let me know if I need to do anything else. Do you have any recommendations for me so that my computer runs like this forever.
At this stage I think it prudent to have a more in-depth look at your computer and for the time being we will just carry out one proactive measure. Do not be alarmed by this but merely view it as myself ensuring your online safety.

By all means when I give the all clear I will provide some advice about basic system maintenance and online safety.

Custom Batch File:

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy and Paste everything from the Code Box below into Notepad: <-- Start >> Run... type in notepad and select OK
Code: Select all
@Echo off
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
sc stop WinToolsSvc
sc delete WinToolsSvc
rmdir /s /q "C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools"
del %0

  • Go to File >> Save As
  • Save File name as "Dakeyras.bat" <-- Make sure to include the quotes.
  • Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your Desktop.
  • It should look like this: Image

Now double click on the desktop Dakeyras.bat to run the batch file. It will self-delete when completed.

Scan with GMER:

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Scan with RSIT:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application!
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

Note: Both logs can also be located within this folder rsit at the root of your installed Hard-Drive. EG: C:\rsit

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is your computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • GMER Log.
  • Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.

Hi Dayekreas,

Thanks again. Here are my responses:

•How is your computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?

No problems have been encountered. Runs fine still.

Files from RSIT runs are attached. I am unable to attached GMER log file since it is more than the allowed 256 KB. So, I attached it in the zipped format. I hope thisis OK.

Regards,
Mike

OK fair enough. The GMER log is rather large indeed, the other logs I will post myself as this is a training forum and it will be off benefit if all are able to view.

Hello again. :)

Random Access Memory Advice:
Total RAM: 511 MB (28% free)
Though Microsoft claims XP will run with a mere 128 MB installed in my opinion a minimum of 1 GB is far better.

If you wish to upgrade the installed memory, Crucial have a small scanner(CrucialScan.exe)which is perfectly safe to download and run. Which will advise if your system can support any upgraded memory modules. They cater for the US/UK and Europe.

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please go here and download ERUNT.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Double click on erunt-setup.exe to Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • Use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
  • Click on OK
  • Then click on YES to create the folder.

Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

FixPolicies:

Please download to your Desktop FixPolicies.exe, a self-extracting ZIP archive from here.

  • Double-click FixPolicies.exe.
  • Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
  • The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies.
  • Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd.
  • A black box should briefly appear and then close.
  • Leave FixPolicies on your desktop please until I otherwise advise, thank you.

Reset SP2 Firewall:

Click on Start >> Run... and cut/paste in the following and click on OK
Code: Select all
firewall.cpl
Click on the Advanced tab >> Restore Defaults >> At the prompt click on Yes >> OK

Now click on the General tab >> select Off(not recommended) >> OK.

Note: No need for it to be active after the reset because Kaspersky Internet Security has a firewall component.

Next:

Please download OTM to your Desktop.

  • Double-click OTM to start the program.
  • Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + B (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
Code: Select all

Hi Dakeyras,

Here are my responses....

•How is your computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or any further symptoms?

It is still performing fine. After running OTM, I selected OK to reboot. It rebooted fine but niw my desktop has white background and 'Restore my Active desktop' has 'Restore desktop' button. I selected it and I choose Yes to run scripts in the page prompt and nothing happens. Also, one problem that I have been seeing for the past few days is that if I choose 'Reply' to an email in my hotmail account, I cannot type anything :pale: "Rich Text" is grayed out and all formatting icons in hotmail pane are grayed out. I can send emails fine from my gmail account. I am using internet explorer.

•OTM Log.

Hi. :)

It rebooted fine but niw my desktop has white background and 'Restore my Active desktop' has 'Restore desktop' button. I selected it and I choose Yes to run scripts in the page prompt and nothing happens.
OK not a problem and thanks for the update.

I think I know what may be causing this, please bare with myself and we will address this in due course.

Reset IE8:

  • Please download this Microsoft FixIt and save it to the desktop.
  • Double click on MicrosoftFixit50195.exe select I Agree and click on Next.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts.
  • You may delete MicrosoftFixit50195.exe when finished and or keep it if any problems in the future with IE8.
  • Next time IE8 is launched you will be prompted to reapply settings again, this is normal.

Note: Any add-ons will require to be reapplied after the above reset.

Next:

Out of date Adobe and Java installations pose a security risk. They can be used by malware as a means to infect a computer and or re-infect. We will update both shortly.

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Adobe Reader 7.0.9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_11

To do so, click once on each of the above in turn to highlight and then click on the Remove button.

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

New Adobe Reader Installation:

  • Go here and click on AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

New Java Installation:

  • Click here to visit Java's website.
  • Scroll down to Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 17. Click on Download.
  • Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  • Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  • Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  • Click on jre-6u17-windows-i586.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  • Double click on jre-6u17-windows-i586.exe to install Java.

Check Hard Disk For Errors:

Press Start->Run, then copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • How is your computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or any further symptoms?
  • checkhd.txt.

Hello Dakeyras,

I have done all that you asked me to do - uninstalled JRE and Adobe reader and installed the ones that you asked me to install. Ran the microsoft fix it etc.,

•How is your computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or any further symptoms?

Since yesderday, after unable to recover the active desktop after the reboot, performance seems to be slow again. After a reboot, Internet explorer starts slowly , after about 4 min of waiting. Pages take longer to load as well.

Dakeyras,

No. The desktop is still not back to normal. Selecting 'Restore active esktop' button did not do it.

Hi. :)

Reboot into Safe Mode:

How to boot into Safe Mode:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode, do so.

If any problems refer to this tutorial.

Next:

In Safe Mode when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears use the Arrow(On the number pad part of the keyboard)keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press the Enter/Return key.

After your computer has booted up as normal, let myself know if the Desktop is back please, thank you.
