I've run malwarebytes, hijackthis, spyware doctor kaspersky online, adaware.
The only one that seems to see something is spyware doctor and it pointed to registry entries that I have since managed to get at using BartPE and loading the registry hive and editing it that way. Now those entries do not show up but the redirection of the search engine results is still happening.
