Hi,
When I tried to delete Defender Pro from the add/remove the message came up as follows: could not open INSTALL.LOG file. What can I do about this? I did everything in the post except get rid of Defender Pro because it wouldn't let me.

No worries, we will take care of them on different way ;)

First,
ERUNT.
Download ERUNT and save to the desktop.
  • Double click erunt-setup.exe to install the program.
  • Follow the prompts > uncheck Create NTREGOPT desktop icon at the Additional Tasks screen.
  • Click No when you are prompted about creating an ERUNT entry in the startup folder.
  • Next screen, uncheck Show documentation and check Launch ERUNT.
  • If ERUNT doesnt start by itself, launch it from the desktop shortcut.
  • At the configuration screen, make sure all 3 checkboxes are checked
  • Click Ok to run the backup process

Note:
The backups can be restored from here:
C:\windows\ERDNT\<todays date>\ERDNT.exe

Next,
OTM by Old Timer.
Please download from HERE and save to the desktop.
  • Double-click OTM.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTM.exe and select Run as an Administrator)
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Reg

Hi Jeannine,
Seems to be running a little faster. Thank you what can I do to keep it this way?

Before
Total RAM: 191 MB (13% free)

After
Total RAM: 191 MB (25% free)

I like to advise you to think about hardware upgrade (capacity of ram - minimum 256mb) to feel the improvement.

First,
You can reduce the startups time a bit by fix the remaining entries as below instruction. None of them is critical and no need to start during system startups.

Fix entries.
  • Go to HiJackThis Main menu.
  • Click at Do a system scan only button.
  • Search for below entries and tick it.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CARPService] carpserv.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - Global Startup: HP Digital Imaging Monitor.lnk = C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: HP Image Zone Fast Start.lnk = C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqthb08.exe
  • Close any other program and leave HiJackThis alone.
  • Click Fix checked

Next,
CCleaner
Please download CCleaner from HERE and save to the desktop.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click Next to use the default install location.
  • Please untick below option.
    Image
  • Click Install then Finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • In the Left Pane, click Tools.
  • Click on Uninstall button.
  • Highlight the program as below and click Delete Entry button.
    Defender Pro PC Repair
  • Click to close.

Next,
Kaspersky Online AV Scan
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Next,
Checklist.
Please post:
  • Kaspersky's result log.
  • HiJackThis log (New).
  • Description about your system behave.
  • Any question if you have.

Hi,
Let's try another tool.

First,
ESET Online Scanner
Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Next,
Checklist.
Please post.
  • log.txt (Eset)
  • HiJackThis log (New).
  • Description about your system behave.
  • Any question if you have.

I ran the Eset scan like you saud but it never came up for me to save anything therefore i have no log.txt to send to you. I don't know why.
my system seems to be running better but is still slow when I have two or more programs or web pages going at the same time.
1) What can i remove that you've had me install? or do I even need to remove anything?
2) Is there anymore I can remove from the computer?
3) What can I do to prevent this in the future?
4) Do I need all the stuff from HP or Brodbund or media manger?

I dont know why the scan didn't work. PLEASE help me I'm not good at this at all. sorry. :(
