Browser is being Hijacked

First of all, I need to say I am using a wireless router, but this computer is plugged physically into it. (I noticed the instructions said the helper would need to know if we had a router or not.)

What's happening:
When I do a search using the google search engine on my firefox browser, sometimes when I click what looks to be a legitimate link (foodnetwork.com for example) sometimes it will take me to a site that says my computer is infected and the site says it's running a scan. There is a pop up window that wants me to click it to take me to a site to download a virus cleaner.

I have never clicked on the pop up window. I have always gone to task manager and killed firefox in the process window so I don't have to click anything that has been presented by the hijack.

I've quit searching on firefox since that seemed to be the only browser it happened on--but then it happened once on Chrome too, but Norton's didn't pop up the one time it happened on Chrome.
Since that one time it happened on the Chrome browser, I've oddly had the browser tell me 2-3 times that Chrome wasn't my default browser (which it was)
I also suspiciously had Windows Live Messenger make itself auto load at the windows start up. (I've not used that program in over a year or more, so that seemed very odd.)

I have run malwarebytes anti-mal ware full scan, and it finds nothing.
I have also run ad-aware and it hasn't found anything.
I also have spywareblaster, but I did forget to update it for a few weeks when this happened. (bad me, bad)
My norton's internet security 2009 has started saying it's blocking attempts when this happens. Norton scans also don't pick up anything.
I also tried the online Windows Live OneCare safety scanner, but it didn't find anything.
I just installed the HOSTS file I saw on your site here.

I also have been a member of the Nielsen net ratings panel for years and have a program installed that I intentionally let track my internet surfing as part of their research. (I guess that's technically spyware, but it is legit and approved.)

I'd appreciate any help that can be offered to get rid of this hijack problem.

  1. Open HijackThis.
  2. Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  3. Look under System tools.
  4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  5. Click on the Save list... button.
  6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  7. Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)

Please download RSIT by random/random... and save it to your desktop.

1. Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
2. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
3. RSIT will start running. When done... 2 logs files...will be produced.
4. The first one, "log.txt", will be maximized
5. The second one, "info.txt", will be minimized.

Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(These logs can be lengthy, so post 1 log per reply please.)

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here.

• Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
• If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

• In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
  • Sections
  • IAT/EAT
  • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
  • Show All (don't miss this one)
• Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
• Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
• Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

My computer hasn't experienced any browser hijacking since I installed the HOSTS file, and it seems to be running fine now too since doing the steps you prescribed. I just needed to make sure I got rid of the underlying problem that initially caused the browser hijacking.

Back Up registry with ERUNT

• Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it on to your desktop. HERE
• Click on the erunt-setup.exe
• Follow the prompts to install ERUNT
• Choose language
• A set up window will pop up. It will ask: Create ERUNT entry in to the Start up folder, answer NO
  
  
  
• Backup your registry to the default location

Note: To restore your registry (if needed), go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

Download and run OTM

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

• Double-click OTM.exe to run it.

Run a File Search
Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

cmd /c dir C:\*.* /L /A /B /S|Find "insight.exe" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"

A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a minute or two. This is normal.

Please repeat the process with this also.

cmd /c dir C:\*.* /L /A /B /S|Find "nielgfx.sys" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"

A file called look.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.
